1 Pre-1850 Indiana Resources for Family History Research By Irene Hansen, Reference Librarian Indiana State Library Genealogy Division: (317) 232-3689 http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/ Why is it difficult ? Indiana births and deaths were not recorded until 1882. U.S. Federal Census listed only the head of household before 1850. Sources such as city directories, newspaper obituaries, and funeral home records were not common in Indiana before 1850. Where to begin ? Think about Indiana’s history before 1850, and your ancestor’s life during that time period. Remember that a record was created when your ancestor interacted with the government or conducted business. Think about major life events, such as birth, marriage, death, buying and selling property, or legal disputes. Think about your ancestor’s religion, ethnicity, occupation, community activities, and lifestyle; records were created when your ancestor interacted with others. Read local and county histories for clues to local churches, temples, organizations, local social life and customs. Examine local newspapers, as well as genealogical and historical periodicals, for articles pertaining to your ancestor, or your ancestor’s community. In addition to county records , be sure to look at statewide and territorial records. Be sure to look at surrounding counties and even surrounding states’ records. Use topographical maps to locate nearby rivers and where they led; most people traveled via river valleys. Work Backwards, step by step, from what you know, to what you don’t know. Be Creative! If you cannot find your ancestor, look for his/her family members. Think of reasons why your ancestor may not be where you expect him/her to be. Why is it difficult? Indiana births and deaths were not recorded until 1882. U.S. Federal Census listed only the head of household before 1850. Sources such as city directories, newspaper obituaries, and funeral home records were not common in Indiana before 1850. Where to begin? In addition to county records, be sure to look at statewide and territorial records. Be sure to look at surrounding counties and even surrounding states’ records. Use topographical maps to locate nearby rivers and where they led; most people traveled via river valleys. Work Backwards, step by step, from what you know, to what you don’t know. Be Creative! (Genealogy 16.973 S644f). “Emphasis is place on the land patents--the first transfers of title from governmental (mainly federal) entities to private persons--for land in states other than the thirteen original ones.” Many of the patents were for military service in the Revolution and the War of 1812. Also included are “records of land companies, because speculators, many of them prominent in governmental affairs, played a major role in the first states of the development of federal land distribution…. Patents were rarely recorded in county land records. The reason is simply that the patents antedate the organization of most counties and little attempt was made, upon establishing county land records, to begin these records by registering first ownership of land within the newly formed counties.”

Jeffersonville Land Entries 1808-1818. Compiled by Janet C. Cowen. (Genealogy 977.2 I39o, Vol. 1). This is a compilation of the receipt books of the Jeffersonville Land Office, which was established to handle sales of federal lands to individuals. The compilation has a name index, which gives the receipt number. Arrangement of the body of the book is in numerical order of the receipt number. In the receipt list, the name of the purchaser, his place of residence (county or city and state), the description of the property (section, town, range), the amount of land in acres, and the date of the receipt. Prior to 1815, land could be purchased on credit, so there can be several receipts for payments on the same property.

STRATEGIES: 1. Indiana Genealogy Book: Indiana Sources for Genealogical Research in the Indiana State Library. By

Carolynne L. Wendel Miller. (Genealogy 16.9772 M647i; Updated copy at Genealogy Reference Desk). Orange County: Formed 1816 from Knox, Gibson, Washington. County Seat – Paoli. Specific sources were listed under the categories: Births, Deaths, Deeds, Marriages, Probates, Wills, Cemetery, Church, Miscellaneous (DAR Genealogical Records, Naturalizations, Land Records).

2. Marriage Records: Indiana State Library’s Database of Indiana Marriages Through 1850:

http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/isl/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html Verified that Samuel Chandler married Martha Weaver on April 12, 1838. WPA Index to Orange County Marriage Records, 1826-1902. (Genealogy 977.201 O63u v. 4-5). This index did not list either Samuel or Martha. Orange County Marriages, 1816-1902. (Microfilm). Original marriage record of Samuel Chandler and Martha Weaver, April 12, 1838. * Note that early Indiana marriage records did not have parents’ names on them. Check to see who performed the marriage ceremony. If the person who performed the marriage was a minister or other religious figure rather than a justice of the peace, you may be able to find a church or temple record, which may have more information than the civil record.
