Sunday ReflectionBeing His friend Sometimes we run into scripture that confuses us. Take for instance Jesus’ words: You are my friends if you do what I command you. Wait! Doesn’t scripture teach us that Christ loves us even when we fail to obey Him? Certainly, but this seemingly harsh

scripture points us to outsider’s views of Christians. As we have often heard: they will know we are Christians by our love. We will be seen as “friends” of Christ by the world when we are obedient, good servants to Him. Standing up for justice, caring for the homeless, supporting Christian ministries, providing learning and recreational places for the poor, comforting the sick, and making certain that children are treated with love, respect, and dignity … all these actions prove that we are Christ's friends because we have done what Christ has asked of us. What proof of your friendship have you offered the world this week?

Love one another as I have loved you. (John 15.12)Loving one another enables us to share in the divine life of the Trinity. God the Father loves us through the gift of the Son. We return this gift by showing the same love to our neighbour.

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk God’s ways are not our ways, is one of those very challenging ideas. The scriptures frequently remind us of this. About the time we think we have God figured out He comes along and surprises us. When we reflect on who God has called and chosen we are sometimes left with the question of, “Really? God chose that person?” Within the church and within our traditions we run into the same issue. We have a plan as to how things should go, but is our plan working with God? Just for chuckles here are a few of my favourite misconceptions:

1.Mass is only an hour long. Nowhere in scripture or tradition will you find this. In God’s world Mass starts on time and is finished when it is done. Putting a time limit on it begs the question of what are your priorities?

2.Weddings are the bride’s day. Scripture does not confirm this though some traditions will say it but we all know this to be wrong since if the groom does not show up there is no wedding and if the minister does not show up there is no wedding, so it really is about more than the bride.

3.Brides are given away by their fathers. You again will not find this in scripture but you will find it in tradition influenced by medieval history where women were the property of their fathers or husbands, thus they had to be given away. Countries not overly influenced by medieval history and the nobility retained the old tradition of the bride and groom walking down the aisle together. They are equals in the eyes of God.

4.Funerals are a celebration of life. Scripturally this is true if your focus is eternal life with Christ. A funeral is about our baptismal promise where having become God’s children by the waters of Baptism we are called home to the eternal family of God.

5.Funerals are about the living not the dead. The funeral mass is about the deceased and God’s promise to them. The mass incorporates the living as the promise gives hope and joy to those left behind.

6.Baptism comes before Confirmation. Scripturally this is not true, we have many cases where the Holy Spirit was received before people were baptized. Tradition on the other had tends to prefer, Baptism before Confirmation.

7.Sacraments are a choice. Scripturally this is not true, sacraments are a gift from God, not because we deserve them or have done something to get them, but because God loved us first and knows we need these gifts to live a happy and joy filled life. Traditionally we tend to refer to sacraments and choice; parents’ choice, child’s choice. But the choice is more of one of being open and willing to make public use of the gifts. We did not chose God, God chose us before the world began.

8.The Eucharist is just a memorial or symbol. This is not founded in either Scripture or tradition. The people of the early church were willing to die for their belief that the bread truly becomes the Body of Christ and the wine truly becomes the Blood of Christ. And of course in the scriptures we have the words of Jesus, “this is my body”, “this is my blood”. No one refused or argued with Him.

Sometimes we need to take a long hard look at things and ask ourselves, is this God’s way, or is it another case of humanity imposing its will on God?

Peace Fr. Kevin
