Emotional check-up … Lord, heal my heart

Today’s readings call us to look inward to the state of our hearts, our thoughts, and our emotions.

Our first reading, from Sirach, addresses the complicated emotion of anger. “Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the Lord?” We have all been wounded by others at some point, some perhaps quite deeply. While our emotions are gifts from God, we must guard and manage them with care rather than allowing them to overcome us.

How do we do this? Sirach tells us, “Remember your last days, set enmity aside… Remember God’s covenant and overlook faults.” Embrace a Christian Discipleship mindset…one which does not brood over hurts, but recalls all the gifts our merciful and loving God has given us. His love for us is continual…it is poured out upon us…we, in turn, must focus on and trust in Him.

In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus reminds us of the true position we have before Him in light of all that He has done for us, comparing the Kingdom of heaven to a “king who decided to settle accounts with his servants.” In the parable, a debtor is brought before the king, owing such an overwhelming debt that it could not possibly be repaid. Yet, the king is filled with compassion for the servant, forgives the debt, and lets him go free.

Isn’t this just like our relation to the King of Kings? The Father has given us life, and then sent His only Son to die for us to free us from the “debts” of our sin. He made eternal life with Him possible for each and every one of us. Just as the servant could not repay his debt, it is truly impossible for US to repay our debts to our Lord and Savior. All we can do is live in abundant gratitude by giving our whole selves to God – inside and out!

Our joy and freedom of heart is right there for us to grasp onto and hold tightly in our calling to this life of Christian Discipleship. What incredible gifts to cherish and hold close to our hearts! Sometimes, however, we hold on to other things – like anger and grudges – SO tightly and carefully for fear of dropping them. Listen in prayer to our Lord who implores us to let those emotions go. Let them drop. Let them shatter into pieces—destructive and energy-depleting shards—that can no longer pierce your heart and disrupt your emotional and spiritual well-being.

LIVE FOR GOD and NOT YOURSELF! YOU CAN REST EASY in GOD’s COMPLETE LOVE.

Examen Emocional … Señor, sana me corazón

¡VIVE PARA DIOS y NO PARA TI MISMO! PUEDES DESCANSAR FÁCILMENTE

en el AMOR COMPLETO DE DIOS.

Catholic Religious Education programs have traditionally focused on knowledge with less emphasis on engaging beyond class and Mass. Traditionally, less attention has been paid to how

we are changed by what we have learned … not just how we are “smarter” or can recite prayers and remember doctrine.

Classroom models have been shown to be ineffective for Religious Education. As society has changed through the decades, so has our need to adjust our approach to sharing, learning, and living our faith. By giving parents the tools to trust themselves with the spiritual growth and formation of their children, the entire family grows in a faith that lasts through life, instead of just studying for the sacraments. This parental involvement results in our whole faith community being strengthened.

Family Catechesis moves us from the classroom to family living rooms – yet not by asking parents to replicate the classroom model at home. Our focus now intentionally develops:

What parents need to begin and sustain conversions of faith To help parents trust themselves to be enough to lead these conversations To accompany families on this life-long journey connected to the faith community

Families will use an online platform that is designed specifically to coach parents to share their faith through simple teaching, ordinary life experiences, and regular conversation.

This is not the tradition that you may be used to, and expect. St. Francis RE Ministry will provide the learning platform and actively do everything to assist families in this transition. We will be there to facilitate, mentor, advise, and support you all along the way. We will do this through phone calls, Zoom, and if needed, individual family parish gatherings. For more information please contact Becky Massingill, DRE, at (775) 247-7386, [email protected], or click on

Notice of 2nd Collection (Weekend of September 19-20, 2020): Holy Land Collection

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We turn our attention to the Holy Land and its place in salvation history. Keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land and serving the people there is an urgent goal of the Church. This is the place of the “first” church, where Jesus lived and taught.

There is a small, vibrant Christian community in the Holy Land, in Israel and Palestine today. These Christians are the descendants of the first Christians who witnessed the Passion of Christ; yet many of these people are leaving the Holy Land due to economic, social and religious hardship. They need our help to survive and to help care for the holy places that mark the life of Jesus.

Under normal circumstances, this collection is taken on Good Friday, but due to the current pandemic, we will be collecting on September 19 & 20, 2020. With the funds from the Holy Land Collection, the Franciscan Friars, who have been in the Holy Land since 1209, not only provide presence, care and service to the people who are living in the Holy Land but also maintain the holy shrines that are so significant in the history of our Christian Faith.

Your generosity and prayers enable Christianity to remain and thrive in the Holy Land.

Sincerely Yours in Christ

Most Reverend Randolph Calvo Bishop of Reno
