PLFN EDUCATION UPDATE
Marlene Martin, CMM, will be at the Band Office on August 26 to meet with post-secondary students who are
to be funded for the September 2019 school year. If you have receipts to be reimbursed, bring those. If you
have banking information to still give her, bring that too. She will be here from 10:00am to 3:00pm. It is a
"first-come, first-serve" drop-in - no appointment necessary.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITY – Pictou Landing First Nation
Sheila was successful in securing funding from Heritage Canada and the National Indian Brotherhood to
develop and deliver a Mi’kmaq language training project in our community.
The project will train a minimum of 4 people to become future language teachers in various roles in and for
the community. There are three different component areas that will be looked at in this project:
• the Mi’kmaq language,
• creating and using teaching resources,
• cultural activities.
The program officially runs from September 16, 2019 to March 20, 2020. However, accepted trainees will be
expected to also participate in the PLFN Mi’kmaw Language Cultural camp to be held in Debert on September
6 to 9, 2019. This is a pre-requisite to being officially accepted into the training project as a trainee. The
project will be 30 hours per week (9:00 – 3:00 but times can be negotiated). The location of the project will
be held upstairs of the Day Care Building.
A Training Allowance will be provided for each trainee. If you are a social client, please see the Social
Administrator for any issues or questions you may have as how this will affect your social funding.
Trainee positions are for Pictou Landing First Nation members only. We are looking for people who have some
Mi’kmaq language ability. *** If you are not a speaker, this is not a program for you. We are teaching
people to be language teachers, not become language speakers. That will be the responsibility of these new
teachers later on. ☺
If you are interested in applying, fill out an application form. Forms will also be available at the front desk.
Interviews will be held the week of August 26. Sheila will be going on vacation beginning Thursday, August 15
and returning Tuesday, August 20. If you have questions, Sheila can be reached by email:
[email protected] or FB: Sheila Cat. She will bring her phone with her and check my
messages/emails periodically.
Applications will be accepted until Thursday, August 22. Please bring them to the band Office or email them
to me.
Please note – Sheila is not guaranteeing a teaching job with this project. It is to train community members to
become teachers when the opportunities arise.
