Giving alms, Jesus teaches, means making the needs of others our own, especially the needy of our world. They are all around us: children and the old, the sick and the suffering, families and indi-viduals, next-door neighbors and people in lands faraway. Whatever we give should be something of ourselves, something that costs us. We will receive blessings from God in return. What shall we give to the needy this lent? In deciding, decide gen-erously. After all, before us is the great alms Jesus gave: "He loved us, and gave himself up for us." Pope Francis said in his Ash Wednesday homily, 'Lent is also a privi-leged time for prayer', He quoted St. Augustine, who described fasting and almsgiving as "the two wings of prayer," because they are signs of humility and charity. Prayer offers us all a very special opportunity to grow in our rela-tionship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our baptism. In our busy world, Prayer provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our patterns and sins. We should pray more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've done and failed to do, and to be generous to those in need. Fasting is tied closely to almsgiving. Pope Francis says "Fasting makes sense if it really chips away at our security and, as a consequence, benefits someone else, if it helps us cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bent down to his brother in need and took care of him." During Lent do you think God needs the chocolate, candy, and other trivial things we give up? No He needs us to look deep within ourselves and reflect. He wants our hearts. So when you fast, do not proclaim it, do not look hard done by, smile and go about your day happy. We are told this in the Bible. In fact he wants us to stop our obsession with the ME and start thinking about what truly matters in life.

CTK Scholarship Committee is pleased to accept applications for six $500 scholarships: Applications can be picked up at the church office beginning February 11. Due by 5:00pm Thursday, April 23. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. All information is confidential. Academics, financial need, involvement in school, church and community are the various criteria used by the selection committee to determine scholarship recipients.
Women’s ACTS Retreat March 12-15, 2020 Where: Lone Star Retreat Grounds (Transportation furnished from St. Matthews to Lone Star and from Lone Star back to the church Sunday morning) Starting: 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 12th at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Longview. Concludes: 10:30 a.m. with Mass at St. Matthews March 15, 2020, followed by a reception/lunch for Retreatants and their families. Applications are in the foyer of the church. La Limosna, la Oración, el Ayuno from USCCB.COM
Jesús enseña, dar limosna, significa hacer nuestras las necesidades de los demás, especialmente las necesidades de nuestro mundo. Están a nuestro alrededor: niños y ancianos, enfermos y familias sufrientes, e individuos, vecinos y personas en tierras lejanas. Cualquier cosa que demos debe ser algo de nosotros mismos, algo que nos cuesta. Recibiremos bendiciones de Dios a cambio. ¿Qué le daremos a los necesitados esta cuaresma? Al decidir, deci-da generosamente. Después de todo, ante nosotros está la gran limosna que Jesús dio: "Nos amó y se entregó por nosotros". El Papa Francisco dijo en su homilía del Miércoles de Ceniza: "La Cuaresma también es un tiempo privilegiado para la oración", citó a San Agustín, quien describió el ayuno y la limosna como "las dos alas de la oración", porque son signos de humildad y caridad. La oración nos ofrece a todos una oportunidad muy especial para crecer en nuestra relación con Dios y profundizar nuestro compro-miso con una forma de vida, arraigada en nuestro bautismo. En nuestro mundo ocupado, la oración nos brinda la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre nuestros pecados. Deberíamos rezar más pro-fundamente, experimentar dolor por lo que hemos hecho y no hemos podido hacer, y ser generosos con los necesitados. El ayuno está estrechamente relacionado con la limosna. El Papa Francisco dice: "El ayuno tiene sentido si realmente des-truye nuestra seguridad y, como consecuencia, beneficia a alguien más, si nos ayuda a cultivar el estilo del buen samaritano, que se inclinó hacia su hermano necesitado y lo cuidó. Durante la Cuares-ma, ¿crees que Dios necesita el chocolate, los dulces y otras cosas a las que renunciamos? No, Él necesita que miremos profunda-mente dentro de nosotros mismos y reflexionemos. El quiere nuestros corazones.
