INTRODUCTION

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope. Psalm 130:5 RSV

Being a writer and a strong person of prayer, I was challenged by the words of a well known Christian speaker. “When you pray God’s word, there’s power because the devil doesn’t know if it’s you or God talking.”

Prompted by that thought, I began a year long quest to collect and catalog scriptures according to topics that I needed to overcome in my own life such as, Depression, Anxiety, Fear, Judgment, Repentance, Praise, etc. As I began to pray the Word, Depression and Anxiety lifted after plaguing me for months. My prayers of Repentance were deeper, more heart-felt as I used God’s own words. My time of Praise was sweeter and more intimate, speaking the words penned by those who loved God before me. Sins that I hadn’t been able to overcome like judging, boasting, complaining, were routed out by a double edged sword...For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 RSV

Simply Praying the Word takes the premise of the Prayer of Jabez book, a volume about a scripture prayer that contained the “key to extraordinary favor with God,” and expands it to encompass the needs we face everyday. Needs like Healing, Provision, Direction, Comfort, and Wisdom.

As we experience life, deep emotional pain from hurts in our past can burrows into our souls and can remain there for months and years. Then, we begin to search for a way to relieve the ache through food, drugs, alcohol, or TV. Sin is often simply just a wrong reaction to emotional pain. To overcome our wounds we need a balm. And God has already provided it in His word.

The word balm is derived from balsam, which originated from the Greek word balsamon, which was adopted to represent the Hebrew words baal

shemen, meaning "lord of oils." What I began to see was the Word is a balm. It soothes and eases our emotional hurts like nothing else can. It offers to those who are emotionally wounded an actual, literal physical comfort. The key is to overcoming emotional pains, addictions, problems in your life is make praying the word a part of your daily prayer life.

What God says.

"Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink—even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk—it's all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good for the soul!”

Can you hear the heart of your Heavenly Father who loves you? As we would not with hold medicine from our children, He has provided a way of deliverance, of comfort and healing to His children through His word.

“Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, for the life of your soul is at stake. I am ready to make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the mercies and unfailing love that I promised to David.”

The bible tells us that God loved David. The God of Jacob chose David and made him a great king. The Mighty God of Israel loved him. II Samuel 23:1 CEV

“My thoughts are completely different from yours," says the LORD. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

How many times do we try to solve problems through worldly wisdom? We need to renew our minds and use God’s solutions.

"The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. You will live in joy and peace.

Are you living the kind of life God has for you? One of blessing and provision, peace and health? Do you have the direction and wisdom you need? God tells us His word will not return void (ineffective, useless, without legal force, invalid) but will accomplish and prosper (succeed, grow, and thrive vigorously).

Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow. Where briers grew, myrtles will sprout up. This miracle will bring great honor to the LORD's name; it will be an everlasting sign of his power and love. Isaiah 55: 1-3, 8-13 NLT

God wants to bless us, free us, and comfort us, so that we may bring glory to His name and live a life that is a testimony to those around us who don’t know Him.

My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.  Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to him who finds them, and healing to all his flesh. Proverbs 4:20-22 RSV

How to pray the word

The scriptures listed here are as they are found in the bible. They have not been rewritten or altered in any way. Please, don’t just read these scriptures. There is power in speaking the word... because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.(Romans 10:9 RSV As you pray aloud and allow these whole scriptures to sink into your mind, over time you will have these memorized and you will be able to pray the word from memory. The trick is to take a scripture and reword it in your mind to personalize it as you pray it. Taking the word and turning into a prayer is rather simple, but can take some practice. For example;

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the council of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he mediates day and night. Psalm 1:1-2 NIV

To personalize it in prayer form, you would pray, Lord, I thank you that I am blessed because I don’t walk in the council of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But my delight is in the law of the Lord, and on your law, I will mediate day and night.

Another example;

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:29-31 NIV

To personalize it in prayer form you would pray, Lord, I thank you that you give strength to me when I am weary and you increase my power when I’m

weak. Even when I’m tired and weary and stumble and fall; but when I hope in You, you will renew my strength, so that I can soar like an eagle, run and not grow weary. I will walk and not faint.

In the chapter on praying for your children, you will need to turn the scripture around and use their name.

God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control. II Timothy 1:7 RSV

Changed to: God did not give my son, Jonathan, a spirit of timidity, but he has a spirit of power and love and self-control. II Timothy 1:7 RSV

The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. II Timothy 4:18 RSV Changed to: The Lord will rescue my son, Benjamin from every evil and save him for his heavenly kingdom. II Timothy 4:18 RSV

There some study aids to help you as you are praying the word. First, you will notice a Key Verse. One of these scriptures listed will stand out at you and speak to your heart. That is going to be your key scripture as you wage war against the struggles and the sin in your life. This will be the scripture that you memorize and will be the foundation for your battle.

Towards the close of the chapter, you will notice a GOD SPEAKS. This is a scripture where God is speaking directly to you on a particular topic. Allow His words to penetrate deeply into your spirit. They are words God wants to use to comfort, encourage, rebuke, and challenge you into a deeper walk with Him.

At the very end, you will be encouraged to look for more scriptures on your own. I have included areas where you can start your pursuit of the word. Searching the bible for scriptures to pray and or to stand on will made this whole process more personalized and allow God to speak to you in a way that is unique to you and your experience.

Final Thought

Scriptures are the promises of God. They are a guarantee that you can cling to in your everyday life, except for one thing. All of the praying of God’s

word will produce nothing if you are not obeying the principles found in God’s word. If there is sin in your life, your prayers will not be answered. James 5:26 tells us The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.

If you have drifted from God, start with the Repentance scriptures and get your heart right with Him. If there is a particular sin you are really struggling with, make the Help scriptures part of your daily prayer until you have victory over this area. Once you have repented, God will restore you to right relationship with Him and all his promises will be yours.

Turn thou to me, and be gracious to me; for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart, and bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. Consider how many are my foes, and with what violent hatred they hate me. Oh guard my life, and deliver me; let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in thee. May integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for thee. Psalm 25:16-21 RSV

Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood

Don't let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me. Answer my prayers, O LORD, for your unfailing love is wonderful. FAITH

KEY SCRIPTURE_____________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

So, you see, it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that there is a God and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. Hebrews 11:6 NLT

What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. Hebrews 11:1 NLT

If you do not stand firm in faith, you shall not stand at all. Isaiah 7:9 NRS

Ah Lord God! It is you who made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. Jeremiah 32:17 NRS

In every battle you will need faith as your shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed at you by Satan. Ephesians 6:16 NLT

For the LORD God is our light and protector. He gives us grace and glory. No good thing will the LORD withhold from those who do what is right. Psalm 84:11 RSV

Then he (Jesus) touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." Matthew 9:29 RSV

For truly, I (Jesus) say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Matthew 17:20 RSV

For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, "He who through faith is righteous shall live.” Romans 1:16-17 RSV

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. Romans 5:1 RSV

So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ. Romans 10:17 RSV

For the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. But you, Timothy, belong to God; so run from all these evil things, and follow what is right and good. Pursue a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7 RSV

What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. James 2: 14-17 RSV

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:7 RSV

JUDGING

KEY SCRIPTURE____________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________

So be careful not to jump to conclusions before the Lord returns as to whether or not someone is faithful. When the Lord comes, he will bring our deepest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. And then God will give to everyone whatever praise is due.I Corinthians 4:5 NLT

God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Matthew 5:7 NLT

Don't speak evil against each other, my dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize each other and condemn each other, then you are criticizing and condemning God's law. But you are not a judge who can decide whether the law is right or wrong. Your job is to obey it. God alone, who made the law, can rightly judge among us. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to condemn your neighbor? James 4:11-12 NLT

Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. For others will treat you as you treat them. Whatever measure you use in judging others, it will be used to measure how you are judged. Matthew 7:1-2 NLT

"Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. Stop criticizing others, or it will all come back on you. If you forgive others, you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37 NLT

(Jesus said) Shouldn't you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you? Matthew 18:33 NLT

If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over.

Whatever measure you use in giving – large or small – it will be used to measure what is given back to you. Luke 6:38 NLT

Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; So each of us shall give account of himself to God. Then let us no more pass judgment on one another, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. Romans 14:10, 12-13 RSV

Yes, each of us will have to give a personal account to God. So don't condemn each other anymore. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not put an obstacle in another Christian's path. Romans 14:12 NLT

So whenever you speak, or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law of love, the law that set you free. For there will be no mercy for you if you have not been merciful to others. But if you have been merciful, then God's mercy toward you will win out over his judgment against you. James 2:12-13 NLT

Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy each to his brother. Zechariah 7:9 RSV

But you would not have condemned those who aren't guilty if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: 'I want you to be merciful; I don't want your sacrifices.' Matthew 12:7 NLT

GOD SPEAKS-- Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Luke 6:36 RSV

You cry noisily and flood the LORD's altar with your tears, because he isn't pleased with your offerings and refuses to accept them. And why isn't God pleased? It's because he knows that each of you men has been unfaithful to the wife you married when you were young. You promised that she would be your partner, but now you have broken that promise. Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Psalm 34:13 RSV

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. Proverbs 27:1 RSV

You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing amiss, for I am determined not to sin in what I say. Psalm 17:3 NLT

If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. II Corinthians 11:30 RSV

Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:4 NLT

God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important, so that no one can ever boast in the presence of God. God alone made it possible for you to be in Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Christ to be wisdom itself. He is the one who made us acceptable to God. He made us pure and holy, and he gave himself to purchase our freedom. As the Scriptures say, "The person who wishes to boast should boast only of what the Lord has done." I Corinthians 1:28-31 NLT

Help me to guard my words whenever I say something. Psalm 141:3 CEV

Don't grumble about each other, my brothers and sisters, or God will judge you. For look! The great Judge is coming. He is standing at the door! James 5:9 NLT

For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends. II Corinthians 10:18 RSV

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger. Proverbs 15:1 NLT

In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing, so that no one can speak a word of blame against you. You are to live clean, innocent lives as children of God in a dark world full of crooked and perverse people. Let your lives shine brightly before them. Philippians 2:14 NLT

Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. I Thessalonians 5:16 RSV

As for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Galatians 6:14 NLT

Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD, keep watch over the door of my lips! Psalm 141:3 RSV

My soul makes its boast in the LORD. Psalm 34:2 RSV

GOD SPEAKS-- This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man gloat in his wisdom, or the mighty man in his might, or the rich man in his riches. Let them boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the LORD who is just and righteous, whose love is unfailing, and that I delight in these things. I, the LORD, have spoken! Jeremiah 29:23-24 RSV
