Samuel Adler

Samuel Adler, Professor Emeritus of the Eastman School of Music (1966-1995) and the Juilliard School (1997-2014) is the composer of over 400 published works in all media, and has authored books on Choral Conducting, Sight Singing and Orchestration. He has been commissioned and performed by many of the leading musical organizations throughout the world and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001 and into the American Classical Hall of Fame in 2008. He is also a member of the Academy of the Arts of Germany, and Chile. In the sacred music field, he has written both large and small works for the Church as well as the Synagogue and many have been published by Paraclete Press.

Composer’s Notes

The anthem My Beloved is Mine was written in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Gloriæ Dei Cantores and its conductor Elizabeth C. Patterson. I have had a long and very happy relationship with this chorus and its director, and wanted to dedicate this short work with words from the biblical book ‘The Song of Songs’ to celebrate our ongoing association. The love of a man to his beloved or as in Christian theology, the love of Christ for his Church should, in this case, be interpreted as the love of a composer to an organization which has been so supportive of his work. I am delighted that the chorus sang the piece at their 25th anniversary concert and hope that everyone performing it from now on will feel the beauty of holiness which I intended to convey in the anthem.

Samuel Adler

Samuel Adler, Professor Emeritus of the Eastman School of Music (1966-1995) and the Juilliard School (1997-2014) is the composer of over 400 published works in all media, and has authored books on Choral Conducting, Sight Singing and Orchestration. He has been commissioned and performed by many of the leading musical organizations throughout the world and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001 and into the American Classical Hall of Fame in 2008. He is also a member of the Academy of the Arts of Germany, and Chile. In the sacred music field, he has written both large and small works for the Church as well as the Synagogue and many have been published by Paraclete Press.

Composer’s Notes

The anthem My Beloved is Mine was written in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Gloriæ Dei Cantores and its conductor Elizabeth C. Patterson. I have had a long and very happy relationship with this chorus and its director, and wanted to dedicate this short work with words from the biblical book ‘The Song of Songs’ to celebrate our ongoing association. The love of a man to his beloved or as in Christian theology, the love of Christ for his Church should, in this case, be interpreted as the love of a composer to an organization which has been so supportive of his work. I am delighted that the chorus sang the piece at their 25th anniversary concert and hope that everyone performing it from now on will feel the beauty of holiness which I intended to convey in the anthem.
