The benefit for Halifax Health — Hospice of Volusia/ Flagler will be from 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Gil- ly’s Pub 44, 1889 State Road 44, New Smyrna Beach. The lineup includes Jeff White, Pickin’ Kind, the Pay- ne Brothers and Coyotes and Towndogs. Requested donation is $5. For more information, call Rose Taub at 386-322-4701, Ext. 6718. Coyotes and Towndogs play what fiddler/singer/ guitarist Adam Floyd calls ‘‘supercharged, honky-tonk, original swing-rock.’’ The bluegrass-folk band Pickin’ Kind features Matt ‘‘Flanders’’ Meehan on vocals and acoustic guitar, and Jason ‘‘Fancypants’’ Miller on vo- cals and mandolin. SuperStars compete in semi-finals SuperStars of Volusia, a performing arts talent com- petition featuring Volusia County students, will have its semi-finals this weekend. Thirty-three contestants will compete at 7 p.m. Satur- day at the Performing Arts Center of Seabreeze High School, 2700 Oleander Ave., Daytona Beach. Tickets are $20 adults, $10 students. The competition is being sponsored by the Daytona Beach Symphony Society. Proceeds will benefit Volu- sia County public and private schools and performing arts programs. For more information, call the sympho- ny society at 386-253-2901. The semi-finalists were selected by a panel of eight performing arts professionals during the first round held in September. Sixteen performers will be selected from the semi-fi- nals to compete at the finals, to be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Performing Arts Center of Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. Prince of Peace holds Octoberfest The 41st Annual Octoberfest of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church continues this weekend. The event will be from 6 to 11 p.m. today, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday on the church grounds at 600 S. Nova Road, Ormond Beach. Admis- sion is free but there is a charge for carnival rides. Parking on church grounds is $1. Patrons should enter on Hand Avenue just west of Nova Road. For more information, call 386-672-5272. The festival will feature live music by Cole Seaver and the Native Skeeter Band from 7 to 11 p.m. today, Five O’Clock Charley from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Tommy C. from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and the rock band Run Rhino from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Other activities include games and a ‘‘Like New’’ rummage sale. Pasta dinners also will be on sale from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Patrons who donate canned food items on Sunday will receive four ride tickets for each food item — limit four items per person. The canned food will help res- tock the church’s social services food pantry, which serves area people in need. SEE IN BRIEF, PAGE 4E I f there’s one thing fans of Halloween love it’s being scared and this weekend, thrill seekers get a chance to meet some of the A-Team of fright. The Spooky Empire’s Ultimate Horror Weekend begins today and runs through Sunday at the Wyndham Orlando Resort, 8001 International Drive in Orlando. Attendees to the festival won’t lack for things to see and do. Guests can check out a variety of films, sit in on panels on topics from the ‘‘Evolution of the Vampire’’ to ‘‘Florida’s Skunk Ape’’ and most importantly get tons of autographs. Let’s take a look at the weekend’s highlights: PPP Films: The film slate kicks off at 6 tonight with the George A. Romero’s ‘‘Creepshow.’’ Check out ‘‘House of Wax’’ at 8:30 p.m., ‘‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes’’ at 10:30 p.m. to fill out the night’s horror fest. The classics continue on Sat- urday with a showing of ‘‘The Blob’’ at 11:30 a.m. followed by ‘‘Frankenstein’’ at 1:30 p.m and ‘‘Bride of Frankenstein’’ at 3:30 p.m. Other films throughout the festival include ‘‘Halloween II,’’ ‘‘The Fog’’ and ‘‘Terror Phone,’’ a short film from ‘‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s’’ Dana Snyder. PPP Panels: One of the highlights of any geek convention is the op- portunity to ask questions of the brains behind some of our fa- vorite obsessions. Spooky Em- pire will be no exception. Here are some of the most intriguing: ‘‘Horror Makeup: Blood and Guts On a Budget’’: Makeup art- ist Rick Gonzales (‘‘Day of the Dead’’) gives tips on effects on a budget. 1-4 p.m. today ‘‘Florida’s Skunk Ape’’: Cryp- tozoologist Scott Marlowe dis- cusses his research about the southern Sasquatch. 12:30 p.m. Saturday. ‘‘Q&A with the Ghost Hunt- ers’’: Featuring Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango from TAPS and the SyFy hit ‘‘Ghost Hunters.’’ 2 p.m. Saturday. ‘‘Q&A with John Landis’’: Legendary director of ‘‘An American Werewolf in Lon- don’’, ‘‘Animal House’’ and Mi- chael Jackson’s ‘‘Thriller’’ video answers your questions at 6 p.m. Saturday. ‘‘Q&A with Tippi Hedren’’: The star of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller ‘‘The Birds.’’ 1:30 p.m. Sunday ‘‘Q&A with Danny Trejo’’: Star of films such as ‘‘From Dusk Till Dawn,’’ ‘‘The Devil’s Rejects’’ and the upcoming ‘‘Ma- chete.’’ 2:30 p.m. Sunday PPP Autographs: What would a con- vention be without plenty of op- portunities for autographs. On top of the celebrities already listed, this year’s stellar guest list includes film stars Shannen Doherty, Adrienne Barbeau, Linda Blair, William Forsythe, Bill Moseley and Jason Mewes. Also featured at the event are wrestlers George ‘‘The Animal’’ Steele, Jake ‘‘The Snake’’ Rob- erts and Greg Valentine, au- thors Max Brooks and Jeff Strand, a slew of graphic artists as well as ‘‘Christine’’ the vehi- cle from the Stephen King clas- sic. According to Spooky Empire, celebrity autographs run any- where from $10-$30 depending on the guest. PPP Here’s what else is happening this week: PPP Wow, Guns N’ Roses, it took you how long to put out ‘‘Chinese Democracy’’? Like a decade? And now you’re being sued because a German elec- tronic music producer says you stole some of his material for the album? Real nice. PPP Entertainment Weekly is re- porting that the Nov. 9 episode of ‘‘Gossip Girl’’ will feature three major characters in a sex scene. Together. The CW net- work is either edgy or desper- ate. PPP Lastly, ‘‘Doctor Who’’ un- veiled its new logo this week. Head over to go386.com/fanboy to check it out. [email protected] Accent writer Tom Iacuzio scours the pop culture uni- verse for the latest in enter- tainment news. Fanboy can be found online as Fanboy 2.0 at go386.com/fanboy Associated Press file ‘‘Bride of Frankenstein,’’ above with Elsa Lanchester and Boris Karloff, will show at 3:30 p.m. Saturday as part of the Spooky Empire horror festival in Orlando.
