W hen Alice Cooper birthed shock rock in the 1970s, he wasn’t the first stage entertainer to go ghoul. (Google ‘‘Grand Guig- nol’’ to discover all the brain- drilling, throat-slashing, eye- stabbing antics that horrified Parisians in that theater dur- ing the 1890s and later). And Alice wasn’t the last rocker or rapper to attempt to shock mainstream society. In honor of Cooper’s concert Monday at Peabody Auditori- um in Daytona Beach, here’s my list of the six most shocking/disturbing/freaky moments in pop music history, whether concerts, album tracks or videos: 6. Eminem, ‘‘ ’97 Bonnie and Clyde,’’ from his 1999 debut al- bum, ‘‘The Slim Shady LP.’’ Eminem has never sounded more chilling than on this track. In his Slim Shady perso- na, the rapper weaves an un- nerving tale about a father who coos baby talk to his in- fant daughter and lets her know he put her mama in ‘‘time out.’’ But listeners know he has slit the mother’s throat and is taking his daughter along on a drive as he looks for a place to dispose of the body. 5. Rolling Stones, Black and Blue Tour, 1976. Freudians had a field day when the Rolling Stones toured in ’76 — exactly what was Mick Jagger hoping to convey when that giant, in- flatable . . . er, ummm . . . thingy unfurled across the stage? 4. Nine Inch Nails, video for ‘‘Closer,’’ single from 1994. Never mind that NIN auteur Trent Reznor uttered a very naughty word on this track. The video version finds a goggled, bound Reznor trapped in some chamber of horrors that the abominable Dr. Phibes would adore, replete with pig heads and other animal car- casses merged with machinery. Meanwhile, our hero moans that he feels ‘‘closer to God.’’ 3. Alice Cooper, various tours, 1971-present. A man, his ax (chop-chop!), his boa (the constrictor kind, not the feath- ered kind) and his blade (of the guillotine sort). What more could horror rock fans want? 2. Dr. Dre with Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt and Jew- ell, ‘‘B****** Ain’t @#*%,’’ from the album ‘‘The Chro- nic,’’ 1992. It was one thing for N.W.A. to hurl an F-bomb at the police on their 1990 album ‘‘Straight Outta Compton.’’ It was another for Dre, Snoop and others to go mega-misogy- nistic with this track from Dre’s debut album, which took gangsta rap across white pick- et fences and into the heart of everyday American culture — the set peaked at No. 3 on Bill- board’s album chart and sold over three million copies. 1. Al Stewart, ‘‘Love Chroni- cles,’’ title track from the Scot- tish-born pop-folkie’s second album, released in 1969. This sprawling, autobiographical, 18-minute track detailed seem- ingly every encounter Stewart had experienced with a female, from kindergarten through adulthood. And the gentle- voiced, literary-minded Stew- art also deployed a naughty word as he explored his mem- ories of the ladies in his life. Though pop music historians have variously cited several old blues recordings, Gene Vincent’s ‘‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’’ (from 1956), or the numerous recordings of ‘‘Louie Louie’’ as the first record to drop the F- word, some consider Stewart the definitive holder of that crown. Stewart’s deployment (in its gerund form — ask your Eng- lish teacher) was all the more shocking because he used the term conversationally, without malice or anger, to contrast the mindless sex of his past with the love (or near-love) he had finally found. The effect was like John Keats dropping the F-word into ‘‘Ode to a Nightingale’’ . . . well, sorta. Rick de Yampert is The Day- tona Beach News-Journal’s en- tertainment writer. He can be reached at rick.deyampert @news-jrnl.com ABC There is no TV justice if ‘‘Modern Family’’ doesn’t turn into a big hit. The cast, which in- cludes the likes of Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Bowie, Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara, is awe- some, and show runner Steve Levitan (‘‘Just Shoot Me’’) is clearly a prototypical TV boss. ‘Modern Family’ rates high T he ratings are in for this season’s new TV shows, and I must admit there are a few surprises and well, a few not so surprises. First the good news . . . The best new debut goes to CBS for ‘‘NCIS: Los Angeles.’’ The ‘‘NCIS’ ’’ venture into a ‘‘CSI’’-style spin-off did very well with 18.7 million viewers. Other shows that did well include ABC’s ‘‘Modern Fami- ly’’ with 12.7 million viewers, ABC’s ‘‘FlashForward’’ with 12.4 million and Fox’s ‘‘The Cleveland Show’’ with 9.4 mil- lion viewers, which just about matched the number of view- ers for the opener of its par- ent show, ‘‘Family Guy.’’ And now some bad news . . . Jay Leno and his 10 p.m. talk show might be driving off into the sunset sooner than planned. His NBC show had a stellar beginning with more than 18 million viewers in the first week. Second week? Down to 5.7 million. Main rea- son? It’s not funny. Actually, it’s terrible. Former NFLer Michael Stra- han’s Fox sitcom ‘‘Brothers’’ will soon be getting the sack after premiering to a whop- ping 2.8 million viewers. The only two shows that did worse? CW’s ‘‘Melrose Place’’ reboot and Mischa Barton’s ‘‘The Beautiful Life,’’ which has already been canceled. PPP Anybody catch the now fa- mous F-bomb drop on last weeks premiere of ‘‘Saturday Night Live’’? Poor new cast member Jen- ny Slate let it slip out during a segment called ‘‘Biker Chick Chat.’’ Quite a way to start your new job there, Jen- ny. No word yet on whether the FCC will come knocking, but never fear, SNL czar Lorne Michaels says Slate’s job is safe. On a side note, it’s 2009. Are we really still worried about somebody dropping an F-bomb on TV at 12:30 in the morning? Most people up that late are watching SNL be- tween ‘‘Girls Gone Wild’’ commercials and ads for Mighty Putty. I think they can handle it. PPP According to TLC, ‘‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’’ will be now known as ‘‘Kate Plus 8’’ when it returns on Nov. 2. ‘‘It’s not a huge shift, but it’s reflective of where the show was already going,’’ said Eileen O’Neill, TLC’s president and general mana- ger, who added that Jon will still be on the show from time to time. People magazine had anoth- er reason for the change ac- cording to a ‘‘source close to Jon Gosselin.’’ ‘‘Given Jon’s recent antics, there was no way the show could continue to portray him as a doting Dad, not while all this other crap was going on.’’ According to O’Neill, dis- cussions are also under way with Kate Gosselin for anoth- er series that might debut in 2010. PPP Here’s what else is happen- ing this week: PPP Sad news ‘‘House’’ fans: Jennifer Morrison, who plays Cameron on the hit Fox se- ries, will leave the show sometime this season. How- ever, her on-screen husband, played by Jesse Spencer, will be staying. I think we can fig- ure out how she’ll be written out. Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame has started a little super group side project. The band consists of Yorke, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck/R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker, percussionist/multi- instrumentalist Mauro Refos- co and Flea. Yes, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The group will perform live for the first time this week- end in Los Angeles. PPP And finally, look for a rere- lease of ‘‘Titanic’’ in the next year or so. This time in 3-D. I cannot wait to try and reach out and grab that guy who took a header off that propeller in 3-D.
