Background
In the finallap of the CanadianGrand Prix, BMW Sauber
drivers Robert Kubica andNick Heidfeld narrowly edged
out their competitor DavidCoulthard. The two racecardrivers
achieved a historic one-
two finish for BMW Sauber.In Formula 1 racing, a fraction
of a second often makes thedifference between victory
and defeat. The aerodynamiccharacteristics of the race carsthus
become a key factor. That
is why BMW Sauber has aspecialist on its development
teamAlbert 3.
Albert 3 is a supercomputerthe largest and fastest in allof
Europe and the third-fastestindustrial-use computer in the
world. The 38-ton giant pro-cesses complex aerodynamicmodels for
vehicle
development.
Because its calculationsarecritically important for the suc-
cess of the team, BMW Sauberneeds to be able to depend on
it at alltimes. System down-time? Not an option. To
preventcurrent and voltage irregulari-
ties from impacting the super-comuter, an uninterruptible
power system (UPS) protectsAlbert 3. Because of the teamshigh
expectationsin a UPS, the
search for a cutting edge sys-tem with the best fault toler-
ance available and a smallfoot-print led BMW Sauber straight
to the Eaton 9395 UPS, part of
the Powerware series.
Competing since 2006, BMW
Sauber quickly made a lastingimpression by achieving
theirbiggest goala winin the
seventh race of the teamsthird season with the one-two
finish in Montreal. But the twodrivers don't command
alltheglorythe credit goes to the
entire team for maintaining aconstant levelof perfection.
And that applies to Albert 3,as well. The supercomputer
has been supporting BMWSauber since December of2006 at the
production location
in the Swiss town of Hinwil.The plants 450 employees are
constantly optimizing the racecars, with 80 people assigned
to aerodynamics alone. Theprocess of testing, modifying
and testing again continuesthroughout the entire race
season. The team needs atleast eight hoursafter a raceto
disassemble a car, check
and replace individualcompo-nents, and rebuild it. Albert 3
performs calculations includ-ing grid models containingmore than
100 million cells to
design everything from front,rear and side wings through
to engine and brake coolingsystems. The key concept is
computationalfluid dynamics(CFD), computer-aided
flowsimulations. The models allow
the developer team to virtuallytest the impact on
performance
before time-consuming andexpensive modifications to theactualcar
are performed. With
Albert 3 playing such a criti-calrole, system downtime is
simply unacceptable. To run asuccessfulrace, everyone onthe team
needs to be able to
count on other team membersdoing their jobs. The drivers
depend on their developers togive them the best possible
machine. And the developersrely on the availability of thetools
they need, most notably
the mission-criticalAlbert 3.
