austerity' that'the' European'Union'has' consistently'prescribed' for'the'debtZladden' Greece' have'caused'an' internal'

polarisaMon'reminiscent'of'the'turbulent'decade'of'the'1940s'in'terms'of'the'ideas'and'pracMces'employed.'Spurred'

on' or' exploited' by' the' populist' poliMcal' parMes,' the' Greek' public' opinion' has' responded' spasmodically' to' the'

supposedly'foreignZmasterminded'scheme'to'convert'Greece'into'a'debt'colony'for'Europe'by'increasingly'endorsing'

an' anMZEuropean' and,'parMcularly,'anMZGerman'mass' hysteria.' This' anMZausterity'polemic' incorporates' ideological'

underpinnings'with'World'War' II'origins'that'criMcally'disMnguish'between'the'external'occupying'powers'with' their'

domesMc'collaborators'and'the'internal'resistance'to'external'occupaMon.

The'crisis'radically'transformed' the'public'discourse'on'the'economic'policy'and,'far'more'importantly,'the'historical'

narraMve' and' collecMve'memory'about' the'Second' World'War.'The' ascendance' of' previously' insignificantZZ' farZ

RighMst' and' farZLeist' poliMcal' parMes' with' external' ideological' points' of' reference' (Nazism' and' Communism'

respecMvely)'radicalised'the'situaMon'even' further.'The'contemporary 'economic'crisis'represents 'only'another' phase'
