Do you think government is a necessary evil? What is meant by the term “necessary evil?”

Why do we have this image in our minds that government is such a bad thing? Why is government bad? Why is government good?

Power The possibility of imposing one’s will

upon the behavior of another person. Who are some people that you think have

power? What gives them this power?

Power is only as effective as the legitimacy of the person possessing the power.

Five Sources of Power Formal Authority

Power comes from power’s holder’s position. Principals have formal authority over their students.

Persuasion Power comes from influencing others to believe what you

believe. Pastors easily persuade people.

Expertise Power comes from the skills one possesses. Doctors are experts in their fields.

Coercion Power comes from the ability to punish/penalize Who has the ability to punish in society?

Rewards Power comes from giving something of value.

How does power even work?

People with power must have legitimacy!!

People with power have to have people in society that believe in what they’re doing! Social contract theory really helps this! What does the social contract theory state?

Why Have Government?

Keeping things in check. Protection Providing public goods.

Schools, roads, fire stations. I personally love to go to Rocky Mountain

National Park.

What makes a public good…public?

More than one person can consume a public good without reducing the amount available.

Once a public good is available, it is available to all!

Monarchy? Rule by one individual. Why would this be bad?

Democracy? This is what the U.S. government

philosophy is. What is one way we show being a democracy?

Oligarchy? Rule by a wealthy few. Why would this be bad?

What exactly is a democracy?

Nation-states

Nation: people share a common language, ethnic origin, & culture.

State: geographical area controlled by a set government.

4 characteristics of nation-states: 1. Territorial integrity

Nation-state has territory w/ boundaries.

2. Population People live in this boundaries.

3. Code of laws U.S. Constitution

4. National sovereignty. Independent & self-governing.

How does anything ever get done?

Institutions establish rules to live by. We automatically know who has authority. We know how decisions get made. We know how we can influence those

decisions?

How to win in Politics?

1) Horse Trading: Winning by Giving to Get Think car salesmen. What do car salesmen do? Have any of you ever used this philosophy to get what

you wanted? 2) Walkout: Winning by Refusing to Play

This is where someone just leaves. You always have the ability to leave a situation.

There may be consequences but you always have that ability.

Have any of you ever used this philosophy to get what you wanted?

How to win in politics?

3) Power Struggle: Outsmart and out strengthen your opponent. Timely battle between two or more enemies. This is when you can outwit your opponent.

SNEAKY way to win in politics. 4) Winning by wiping out the

opposition Just being bigger and badder than your

opponent. Duke playing Northern Colorado in basketball;

Duke is just the better team.

How to win in politics?

Civil disobedience: goal in life is to end evil. This is the group of people who don’t

listen and force someone to believe in what they believe in.

Do exactly the opposite of what is asked. Strategy is to publicly shame the opposition.
