grade seed potatoes for pre-packers, processors, seed merchants
and branded operations worldwide.
Through our sister company ‘Agrico Research BV’ in Holland,
Agrico breed new and innovative potato varieties to bring to
an ever changing market.
Agrico UK choose varieties that cater for the domestic
consumer preference, and that grow well in the UK climate.
By working with a carefully selected team of growers on a
technical level, we then multiply these varieties up to sell seed
potatoes commercially to customers in the table, chipping,
crisping and processing industries.
Although a subsidiary of Agrico Holland, a Dutch farmer
owned cooperative, Agrico UK operates independently to
accommodate for the home market, but has the advantages
that come from being part of a larger organisation.

Athlete.
GeneralAthlete is a variety ideally suited for the fresh and punnet market. Firm to cook with a good taste and even size, it produces a lot of small pale yellow skinned tubers with pale yellow flesh colour. The tubers are oval, with shallow eyes. Athlete is slightly susceptible to Common Scab if grown on sandy soils and needs irrigation. With excellent resistance to Late Blight and Tuber Blight, Athlete is also very suitable for producing organically, requiring low inputs. Dry matter content is quite high giving good cooking and frying quality.
MaturityEarly & Second Early
CultivationPlanting out of the cold store after warming up is recommended. Planting distance of tuber size 35/50mm is approximately 25cm (53,000 plants per Ha). Use of Sencorex can give some foliar discolouration and yield reduction and is therefore not recommended. Athlete has a good primary leaf development. Foliage is medium strong and soil coverage is good. It is not prone to bruising or Black Spot.
FertilisationNitrogen recommended as standard.
StorageAthlete has a short dormancy and is therefore not suitable for long term storage.
ResistanceAthlete is susceptible to Common Scab. Resistance to Blackleg and Late Blight is good, and Tuber Blight is very good. Athlete is resistant to PCN Ro1 and Ro4 and to Wart Disease fysio 1.

GeneralGourmandine is a salad variety with a good long shape, yellow skin and creamy yellow flesh colour. It yields good tuber numbers of a uniform size with shallow eyes. It has firm cooking qualities and an attractive appearance on the plate when eaten either as a salad or general table potato. As its name implies it is recognised as a gourmet eating variety. It holds dormancy well so can store for up to 8 months.
MaturityMaincrop
CultivationIt is advisable to warm up Gourmandine or chit it to break dormancy. It can be slow to start but once it has got going canopy development is strong. Planting directly from the cold store or removal of sprouts should be avoided as it will likely effect yield. Plant spacing for 30/50mm seed is about 27cm (50,000 plants per Ha). Use of Sencorex may affect the foliage and reduce yield so care must be taken. Gourmandine is resistant to bruising and black spot but can be susceptible to alternaria so early blight treatment is advised. Standard Nitrogen application rate is preferred. Extra Potassium (K2O) is not necessary.
FertilisationStandard Nitrogen application rate is preferred. Extra Potassium (K2O) is not necessary.
StorageGourmandine has a very good dormancy and is suitable for long term storage at about 50C.
ResistanceIts resistance to powdery scab is good. Gourmandine is resistant to Virus A and Wart Disease fysio 1. It can be susceptible to Blackleg and Virus X and if the conditions prevail Common Scab, Spraing, Foliage Blight and Tuber Blight.

Carolus.
GeneralCarolus is an attractive parti-coloured variety with light yellow flesh colour. Tubers areuniformly oval in shape. Carolus has a slightly floury texture once cooked, with excellent taste and flavour. It is very suitable for boiling, mashing and makes very good roast potatoes. As it has a reasonably high dry matter, it is also good for home frying. Carolus can be grown on most soil types but does prefer irrigation, and is suitable for production in East and North East Europe and Mediterranean countries.
MaturityMaincrop
CultivationPlant directly from cold store for best results, do not remove sprouts. Use of Sencorex is not recommended as it can result in foliar damage and yield reduction. Planting distance for tuber size 35/55mm is 32cm (40,000 plants per Ha). Avoid planting in light sandy soils as Carolus is moderately susceptible to common scab.
FertilisationNitrogen application is recommended at slightly less than standard, however a small second application during the growing season may be beneficial for tuber numbers.
StorageCarolus is quite dormant and can be stored for long periods at 50C.
ResistanceCarolus has shown good resistance to bruising and does not readily suffer with secondary growth. The variety has excellent resistance to both Foliage and Tuber Blight. Resistance to Virus Yn is very good and the variety has moderate resistance to Blackleg. Common Scab may be an issue on some soils, therefore it is recommended to grow Carolus on heavier soils and avoid very light sandy fields.

Marfona.
GeneralMarfona is a fresh table variety with a yellow skin and light yellow flesh. Tuber numbers are low and grading is regular. The tubers are big, oval round, of regular shape with shallow eyes. Dry matter content is moderate and cooking quality is firm. Cultivation can take place on most soil types, however Marfona is rather susceptible to Common Scab. The shape and size of tubers means Marfona is excellent for use as a baker.
MaturityEarly Maincrop
CultivationPre-sprouting is recommended. Removal of the sprouts more than once can have a negative effect on tuber numbers. Plant spacing at tuber size 35/55mm is 27cm (50,000 plants per Ha). Proper ridging is essential as tubers grow large and become green when not covered with soil. If correctly used, Sencorex does not result in reduction of yield, but discolouration of foliage can be seen. Initial development is good and further development is fine. Foliage is strong and soil coverage is good. Susceptibility to bruising and black spot is low.
FertilisationThe recommendation for Nitrogen is less than standard.
StorageDormancy of Marfona is good and therefore suitable for long term storage at a temperature 5°C.
ResistanceMarfona can be susceptible to Common Scab and somewhat susceptible to Fusarium and Late Blight. Resistance to Viruses Yntn, Yn, X and A, Spraing and Tuber Blight is good. Marfona is resistant to Wart Disease fysio 1.

Champion.
GeneralChampion is a yellow skinned, pale yellow fleshed table potato, suitable for general use. With early development after planting, this is a good early maincrop variety, with oval round tubers of regular shape and shallow eyes. It produces good sized tubers that are resistant to secondary growth, black spot and growth cracks. This variety is well suited on most soil types. With a medium dry matter of 20.2%, it eats well and retains its colour after peeling. It has a buttery taste and smooth texture making it ideal for mashing, boiling or baking.
MaturityEarly Maincrop
CultivationChampion is easy to grow and suitable for production on most soil types. However, do not plant Champion on soils with free living nematodes as it is susceptible to internal defects caused by them. Do not de-sprout the seed more than once. For good tuber numbers, the planting distance at size 35/55mm should be 30cm (45,000 plants per Ha). Allow a wider planting if the crop is being grown for bakers.
FertilisationIt is advised to apply 200-225Kg per Ha of Nitrogen to produce a good yield. Champion also needs a good level of Phosphate to ensure the plant roots itself well.Potassium (K20) application levels of 10% above the recommended standard are advised due to the sensitivity to harvest damage. By applying extra potash, this will help to minimise any bruising. It is advised to apply good tuber blight protection to Champion, especially later in the season, as this variety is susceptible to it.
StorageDo not treat the tubers with CIPC / Chlorpropham during harvest, as the skin is sensitive to damage caused by these chemicals. If using chemicals it is best to use a gas formulation. Champion is still in the evaluation process for determining its storagecapabilities, but early indictions show it is a medium storage variety which can bestored until March at a temperature of 4-5°C.
ResistanceChampion is tolerant to secondary growth and growth cracks.

Estima.
GeneralEstima is a white skinned table variety with light yellow flesh colour. Tuber numbers are good and the oval tubers are quite large. Estima has shallow eyes and uniform size and can be grown on most soils. The dry matter content is good and it has a floury texture once cooked. With a mild flavour, Estima is best for simple recipes like mashed potatoes and wedges.
MaturitySecond Early
CultivationPre-sprouting or temperature shock is necessary in order to get a fast initial development. De-sprouting should be avoided. Planting distance at tuber size35/55mm is about 30cm (45,000 plants per Ha). Tubers tend to grow large so it is important to ensure proper ridging. Use of Sencorex can cause some foliar discolouration but should not affect yeild. Initial development can be slow but furtherdevelopment in good. Estima is slightly sensitive to bruising and black spot.
FertilisationThe recommendation for Nitrogen application is slightly above standard. Additional Potassium application is not necessary.
StorageEstima has a good dormancy and therefore can be stored for long periods at 5
oC.
ResistanceEstima is rather susceptible to Powdery Scab, Common Scab and Late Blight.Resistance to A and Yn-virus is good and Yntn fine. Estima is resistant to Wart DiseaseFysio 1, but susceptible to PCN.

Volare.
GeneralVolare is a fresh table variety with bright yellow skin and cream coloured flesh. Tubersare oval round, large, very regular in shape and have shallow eyes. Tuber numbers aremoderate, grading regular and the yield is high. The cooking texture is firm whilst dry matter content is quite low. Volare grows on most soil types, although it is a little susceptible to common scab. The variety is particularly suitable for cultivation inSouthern Europe and the UK.
MaturityEarly Maincrop
CultivationPlanting out of cold store or after a short heat shock is recommended. Removal of sprouts is not recommended, and removing sprouts more than once will definitely have a negative affect on the overall yield. Planting distance at tuber size 35/55mm is approximately 33cm (40,000 plants per Ha). Proper ridging is necessary as tubers grow big. Volare has quite a slow initial leaf development and good further development. It is not sensitive to bruising and balck spot. In order to get a washable product it is necessary to have the skin set properly. Use of Sencorex is not recommended as it gives a severe foliage reaction and some yield reduction.
FertilisationRecommended Nitrogen application is 50 kg less than standard.
StorageVolare has a short dormancy and is therefore not suitable for long term storage.
ResistanceVolare is a little susceptible to Common Scab and Late Blight. Resistance to Virus Yn is very good. Volare is resistant to PCN Ro1 and Ro4 and to Wart Disease fysio 1.

Markies.
GeneralMarkies is a chipping and crisping variety with a yellow skin and light yellow flesh colour. Tubers are big, oval long with shallow eyes, of uniform size, and deliver highyields. With a floury cooking texture and excellent dry matter content Markies fries well and is known to absorb less oil when fried for either chips or crisps. Markies hasa very low sugar content and potentially very low acrylamide levels after processing. It has a slight susceptibility to spraing so avoid growing on pure sandy or peat soils.Markies is suitable for cultivation worldwide.
MaturityMaincrop
CultivationChitting after warming up is recommended for best results. Being a late maturing variety avoid planting directly out of cold store as it will have a negative effect on tuber numbers. The optimum planting distance for 35/55mm seed is about 32cm (40,000 plants per Ha). As the variety produces big tubers, a good ridge is necessary. Sencorex can often result in some discolouration of the leaf and in turn a slight yield reduction. Markies produces a strong canopy and good soil coverage which can resultin it being difficult to desiccate. Markies is susceptible to alternaria so a preventative treatment against it is advisable. Care should be taken at harvest to avoid bruising, ensure natural senescence has started before haulm destruction. Its susceptibility to black spot is low.
FertilisationApply a little less Nitrogen than the standard having established residual levels available from prior cropping. A second application during the growing season can stimulate the tuber numbers. It is advised to use enough NO3 for earlier foliage development.
StorageMarkies has a very good dormancy at a temperature of 60C. Markies stores well over long periods following a good harvest and initial drying.
ResistanceMarkies is moderately susceptible to Common Scab and Blackleg. Good resistance to Virus A and X, Leafroll, Virus Yn, Virus Yntn, and Fusarium. With an appropriate crop protection regime it is also resistant to Late Blight and Tuber Blight. Markies is resistant to PCN Ro1 and 4.

Fontane.
GeneralFontane is a high yielding multi-purpose variety with a yellow skin and pale yellow flesh. The tubers are oval to long oval and achieve good size with shallow eyes. Tuber numbers are good, with uniform size. A high dry matter variety with floury cooking qualities, Fontane is well established as a processor suitable for chips (french fries) and crisps. It is also used extensively for reconstituted products such as mash or flakes. With low sugar content only very low levels of Acrylamide can be detected after processing. Fontane is susceptible to Common Scab, but can be cultivated on all soil types, especially on lighter soils because of its resistance to Spraing. For more information on acrylamide see: www.acrylamidefacts.org
MaturityMaincrop
CultivationPre-sprouting is not necessary. The optimum planting interval using tuber sizes between 35/55mm is about 32cm or (40,000 plants per Ha). Use of Sencorex often gives a discolouration of the leaf but is not considered a negative influence on yield. Fontane produces a good canopy but has a tendency to fall over if subjected to strong winds during early development - canopy closure is however generally good. Fontane is moderately susceptible to bruising and black spot.
FertilisationFontane likes to be fed and it is recommended that extra Potassium (K2O) is applied which will also have the positive effect of decreasing the dry matter and reduce the susceptibility to black spot.
StorageFontane can be stored for extended periods and is not prone to breaking dormancy early if stored at 7ºC. Sprout inhibitors can have some negative effects on the skin and should be avoided for packing samples.
ResistanceFontane can be susceptible to Common Scab and Late Blight. The resistance to Spraing, Virus Yntn, Virus Yn and Virus X is good. Fontane is resistant to PCN Ro1 and 4. The score for Wart Disease fysio 1 is 6, and for fysio 6 is 7.

Ambassador.
GeneralAmbassador is an excellent early processing variety with pallida resistance. Recently selected for french fry production on the continent it has yellow skin with pale yellowflesh. The tubers are long oval, have shallow eyes and achieve good size. Ambassadordelivers good tuber numbers and yields well out of store and over the grader. The variety has a floury texture once cooked and the dry matter content develops well forearly harvesting, making this variety suitable for early processing. Ambassador prefersmedium light soil where irrigation is possible. Ambassador is suitable for early cultivation in Western Europe.
MaturitySecond Early / Early Maincrop
CultivationPre-sprouting is necessary in order to get a rapid and regular initial development. Desprouting more than once is not recommended as it will result in irregular development. Do not plant in cold soil. Planting distance at tuber size 35/50mm is about 33cm (40,000 plants per Ha). Use of Sencorex is not recommended as it may result in yield reduction. Initial development is fine and further development is good. The foliage is strong and soil coverage is good. Ambassador is a little sensitive to bruising and black spot. Ambassador is mostly used for direct processing after harvesting, but the variety can also be stored for several months. If so, haulm killing is necessary and we recommend lifting after two weeks to get a good skin finish.
FertilisationRecommended - Apply slightly less Nitrogen than standard, preferably given in two applications.
StorageAmbassador is usually supplied directly from the field to the processing factory. The dormancy is quite good so it can store well for several months.
ResistanceAmbassador is susceptible to Common Scab and Late Blight. Resistance to Virus Yntn is good. Ambassador is resistant to PCN Pa2 and Pa3 and Wart Disease fysio 1.

Performer.
GeneralPerformer is a Pallida resistant processing variety that in recent trials is showing earlyindications of significantly reducing the population of potato cyst nemetode in thesoil. The variety is already gaining popularity as a tasty chipper in the fish & chipshop market. It has a yellow skin and a pale yellow flesh colour and due to its superbuniformity of shape with big, oval long tubers, it is ideally suited for processing. Witha floury texture, Performer also eats well as a baker. Although tuber numbers can belower than other varieties, its marketable yield is very high with low wastage, producing big, bold tubers of 45mm upwards. It has a good dry matter content and iswell suited for long term storage. Performer can be cultivated on most soil types butis a little susceptible to common scab. Performer is suitable for growing in WesternEurope.
MaturityMaincrop
CultivationPre-sprouting or a temperature shock is necessary to achieve good tuber numbers. Cut seed has been found to work well in the right circumstances. The planting distance at tuber size 35/55mm is approximately 33cm (40,000 plants per Ha). A good ridge is recommended to avoid green tubers. Sencorex can often give some leaf reaction and yield reduction. Performer has a good initial and subsequent leaf development, with strong foliage. Performer is slightly susceptible to bruising and black spot.
FertilisationThe recommendation for Nitrogen application is standard. A second application during the growing season can influence the tuber numbers positively.
StoragePerformer has a long dormancy and can be stored well for a long period if maintained at a temperature of 70C.
ResistancePerformer is a little susceptible to Common Scab and Late Blight. The resistance to Virus Yn is good. Performer is resistant to PCN Pa2 and Pa3 and Wart Disease fysio 1.

Arsenal.
GeneralArsenal is a crisping variety with pallida resistance, yellow skin colour and light yellowflesh. The tubers are round oval, medium sized and have moderate shallow eyes, producing good tuber numbers of uniform size. The dry matter content is relatively high and crisp quality is good. It has good cooking and frying qualities. Arsenal is suitable for cultivation in most soil types but is rather susceptible to common scab. Regular irrigation will ensure uniformity of growth, and even yield performance which prevents growth cracking.
MaturityMaincrop
CultivationIn order to get a rapid initial development pre-sprouting is advisable. Removal of sprouts more than once, and planting directly from cold storage can have a negative effect on tuber numbers and yield. Planting distance for 35/55mm is approximately 30cm (45,000 plants per Ha). Use of Sencorex may result in discolouration of foliage but does not effect yield. Arsenal has slow initial development and a good soil coverage. The foliage is generally strong. Arsenal is slightly susceptible to bruising, but minimally black spot. Foliage destruction should be done carefully and it takes approximately 3 weeks for skin to set.
FertilisationIt is recommended to give a little less Nitrogen than standard, but extra Potassium can improve tuber numbers.
StorageArsenal has a good dormancy and therefore is suitable for longer storage at approximately 8ºC. Do not treat with any chemical that contains Chloropropham as Arsenal is extremely sensitive to it!
ResistanceArsenal is slightly susceptible to Common Scab and Tuber Blight. Resistance to Blackleg and Virus Yn is good. Arsenal is resistant to Wart Disease fysio 1, PCN Pa2 and 3 and Ro1, 3 and 4.

Destiny.
GeneralDestiny is a crisping variety with yellow skin and yellow flesh colour. The tubers are round oval with little red shallow eyes. The tuber numbers are generally good and of uniform size, producing an excellent yield. It is a fluffy cooking type variety with moderately high dry matter content. Destiny is suitable for growing on most soil types, but can be susceptible to Common Scab. Destiny is suitable for markets all overthe world.
MaturityEarly Maincrop
CultivationPre-sprouting is necessary and desprouting more than once can have a negative effect on the tuber numbers and yield. Planting distance for tuber size of 35/55mm is about 30cm (45,000 plants per Ha). Sencorex can be applied without problems. Destiny has strong early growth and good foliage development. The foliage is firm with good coverage. Destiny is susceptible to bruising and black spot. It is recommended that you allow 3 weeks for skin set before harvesting.
FertilisationThe recommendation for Nitrogen is standard. Extra Potassium will increase resistance to black spot.
StorageDestiny has a moderate dormancy and is only really suitable for off the field movement or very short term storage periods at a temperature of 7ºC.
ResistanceDestiny is moderately susceptible to Common Scab, Late Blight and Blackleg. The variety has good resistance to Virus Yn and is resistant to PCN Ro1 and Ro4 and Wart Disease fysio 1.

Mustang.
GeneralMustang is an excellent crisping and chipping variety. With red skin and pale yellowflesh, it has consistently sized round oval tubers with shallow eyes. It produces hightuber numbers and good yields. With excellent dry matters averaging 23.5%+, Mustang stores very well and has recorded low sugar content, which may potentiallytranslate into low levels of Acrylamide accumulation after crisping. Happy on heaviersoil types, Mustang does however prefer warmer conditions.
MaturityEarly Maincrop
CultivationPerformance can be enhanced if the seed is warmed up and has ideally been chitted before planting. Avoid planting directly from cold storage as it will have a negative effect on both tuber numbers and ultimately yield. The ideal plant spacing for crisping using 35/55mm seed is 30cm (45,000 plants per Ha). Use of Sencorex (Metrabuzin) can result in a slight reaction on the leaf, but it is not thought to effect yield. Mustang develops early and has strong foliage. Mustang is susceptible to Common Scab. The variety has a good resistance to black spot, but can be susceptible to bruising if handled too roughly.
FertilisationThe recommendation for Nitrogen is standard.
StorageMustang has a good dormancy and is suitable for longer storage at temperatures of at least 60C.
ResistanceMustang is susceptible to Common Scab and moderately susceptible to Late Blight. The resistance to Virus Yntn and Tuber Blight is very good. The resistance to Virus Yn and Spraing is good, Mustang is resistant to PCN Ro1 and 4 and to Wart Disease fysio 1.
