fetched water and filled the containers, after which I drove back to the
convent. In the middle of the journey before reaching the convent, thebattery of the vehicle failed and we stopped at the middle of the road.
The four men I had gone with however, helped to push the vehicle tothe side of the road. The next thing our workers decided to carry water
on their heads as the cows were crying for water, I waited for themechanic who took four hours to arrive. Eventually, when the vehicle
could move, the pick-up was empty as the workers had carried all thewater for the cows, old people and the convent. These are some of the
struggles we have to undergo with water and this has motivated us tocome up with a proposal to drill our own water that we can rely on.
POWER CUT OFFS/INTERRUPTIONS
With the modern technology that has made it easy to communicatewe are still finding it difficult due to power interruptions. In additionto poor network where we are, here computer services are rendered
unreliable due to this factor. Sending an e-mail has become difficult. Before you succeed in sending an e-mail you may be lucky if you
experienced once. You experience power cut off after every 10minutes or it can go completely for a day. At times you may decide to
go and send it from the town but even there is the same. Therefore, slow network, power cut off is the norm of the day here in Mundika.
DRINKING ALCOHOL
One evening after work one of our foremen working in theconstruction site, that is building our new convent went out to drink
beer. The man became drunk that he was not able to trace his wayback to the construction site. On his way back he fell in a bush along
the road and slept. Not knowing where he was he stretched his legson the road thinking he was sleeping in his house. Not long the lorry
carrying sand to the construction site came. The driver without seeingthe mans legs stepped on his toes and injured him so badly, this
woke him up from his sleep and he was screaming and lamenting whysomeone can do that to him in his own house. As he was staggering tostand up, the driver saw him though he had already passed him. The
driver stopped the lorry and came back to check what had happened
to the man. This was the very man that was to receive the lorrybringing the sand. The driver left the lorry with the sand and lookedfor a matatu which took the drunkard to hospital. The man could not
recall and tell the doctor what had happened to him, all his toes weeon bandages which made him look like a leper that was the end of his
job. Basically many people end up loosing jobs due to alcoholism.

TRAGEDY
Hendrika Nasirumbi is one of the eighty six elderly assisted by OUD
in Africa project. The program provides food, shelter, clothing andmedication among other basic necessities to all the elderly. A house
was built for her of 12 iron sheet, semi- permanent house last year bythe program. On the evening of Saturday 11th September, 2010 heavy
rainfall and strong wind carried away the roof of her house. During theincidence the elderly woman was in a grass thatched house with her
grand- daughter. It was the grand-daughter who came and noticedthat the roof was missing. Later on they found the roof and the iron-
sheets some distance from her home. The program has since put upanother house for her, out of the 12 iron sheets, 5 of them were badly
damaged and we had to buy new ones to add on the seven that werenot damaged in order to rebuild a new house. She is very grateful forthe support she was accorded.
PRISCILLA MULEKAS HAND BITTEN BY A RAT
Priscilla Muleka is one of the old in Africa beneficiaries. It is said byPriscilla herself that she was sleeping and noticed a rat biting her.
She never knew it would turn out to be a big thing like a wound. We learnt of the incidence later and she was taken to the hospital
and treated. She was put on anti-rabbies injection. She is currentlyimproving and we hope for the best, the old has a big smile after her
swollen hand has improved. She too is grateful for the aid given toher.
AJOURNEY TO JINJA- UGANDA
Moving out of Busia Uganda border, I drove and reached to a crossroad. Since it was rainy season, there was plenty of water on the side
of the road. There sat an old frail Lady eating a banana by the road side. There
was a forest nearby which seemed well cared for. Looking outsidethrough the window, we saw monkeys on the trees. Those whom I waswith in the vehicle wanted to take a photo of the monkeys.
Suddenly, a monkey jumped from a tree and stopped in front of
this Old lady. As the old lady was still eating a banana, the monkeystretched out his/her limp, and grabbed the banana from this ladyshand. Took it and started to eat while looking at this lady face. The old
lady had been given a banana by a passer-by as she had sat by theroad side begging. When we talked to her, she described her situation
which was very pathetic and since we were very far from home wecould not help her much. We gave her the little cash we had which she
appreciated and she left to her home. Immediately, we went to talk

to the lady, the monkey jumped and went back to a tree. This tells us
that even the poor lady had something to share with the monkey.

brown tea and then go to bed.
THE STORY OF MUKHANA
In the village of Nema near the river is this old grandmother with
grandchildren of all whose parents died of different calamities. As onechild cries of hunger, another one is shivering with fever, yet another
one send back home from school because of school fees. Aneighbour just pops in and says that the wild dog has bitten the one who had
gone to fetch water from the river. The Old woman remains silent andalmost collapses from shock of the event but only cries that good Lord
may send a helper for her to bring up her grandchildren that they toomay have a brighter future.
INSECURITY
One Saturday morning, I went to the market to buy potatoes for the
family dinner when I saw boys standing around the vegetables stallslooking at all good things to eat. I looked like angry street children andI suspected they were waiting for an opportunity to steal some fruits.
It was about this same moment I noticed and old woman weaving apink dress and a yellow head scarf standing next to me, picking up
different things that were on display such as pots and dishes. Aftera few minutes I heard a stall keeper shout thief. I saw the young
boy running with this old womans purse. I run to help the old woman
