A bright Future for Seven oaks HospitalPatients and visitors to Seven oaks general Hospital will soon be resting in bright, comfortable, surroundings thanks to recent gifts from the Jessiman Foundation, the Winnipeg Foundation, and others.

13 excellence in Kidney Health

The first phase of construction for this $7.8 million project is now complete and Prairie Trails Medical Clinic will soon be moving into their space adjacent to the front entrance. Construction of the Atrium itself is well underway and the welding for the support beams and superstructure is nearly finished. In just a few months patients and visitors will be gathering, shopping and eating in the beautiful new space.

Sunny Chohan, Executive Director of the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation noted that, “We are now almost halfway toward our goal of $1.2 million in public support for this project. Access to Care is an important step for the health of our community. It signifies a move toward a more integrated approach to health care. I am thrilled to see the community showing enthusiasm for this exciting addition.”

Momentum for the campaign is building with donations such as the $100,000 donated in honour of Judith Jessiman.

Peter Jessiman said, “We feel good about supporting Seven Oaks Hospital because it is an innovator, providing programs that impact the quality of health care throughout Winnipeg and Manitoba.”

The addition will bring more doctors to the under-served area of north Winnipeg, and strengthen coordination of primary care, hospital care and wellness services to prevent and manage chronic illness.

The new space will improve the patient and visitor experience by providing better access to health services and more integrated health care, in a calm and comfortable setting.

If you are interested in learning more about how to support Seven Oaks General Hospital by making a donation or supporting a fundraising event, please call the Foundation office at 632-3552.

Seven Oaks General Hospital is one of four organizations in Canada to be awarded the 2012 Best Employer Award for 50-Plus Canadians by the Workplace Institute.

Seven Oaks has won the award previously and is recognized as a leader in supporting the health of its employees. This year the Workplace Institute recognized Seven Oaks for overhauling its Healthy Organization Strategy to make “significant improvements in employee retention practices, retirement planning, succession, work-life balance, mentoring, knowledge transfer and various

incentives to keep potential retirees engaged in and in the work force.”

The other winners were AltaGas, a natural gas utility, WalMart Canada, and Bethany Care Society, a Calgary-based seniors housing provider. Seven Oaks was the only Manitoba-based winner.

“Our employees work hard to take care of patients and their families in a fairly fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment so we need to work hard to support our employees, to help them stay healthy and focused on their patients,” said Seven Oaks Human Resources Director Jordan Forbes.

The Best Employer Award for 50-Plus Canadians is open to any employer in Canada with more than 10 employees.

14 leadership for Active Aging

In early February work was underway on the roof of the new atrium for the

Access to Care Project. The atrium will be two

storeys and add 6500 square feet to the front of

the hospital with space for a pharmacy, gift shop, a

new Help Centre and a new services area.

An independent panel of judges assesses the nominees for their approaches to career development, retention, recruitment, workplace culture, management practices, health support, and other progressive practices.

“These four winners stood out from the rest with their innovative approaches to retirement, management practices and attracting and retaining mature workers,” said Barbara Jaworksi, founder of the awards and CEO of Toronto-based Workplace Institute.

This is the fourth time Seven Oaks has received this award. The hospital has also been designated a Top 100 Employer in Canada by Maclean’s Magazine three times and a Top Manitoba Employer four times.

National Recognitionfor Kidney Health program at Seven oaksAn exercise and wellness program for

kidney patients run by the Manitoba Renal Program at Seven Oaks General Hospital has been designated a Leading Practice for Canada by Accreditation Canada.

Accreditation Canada audits hospitals nationally to ensure they are meeting standards for care, but it also reviews and designates certain programs as leading practices that should be implemented more widely because they are “sustainable, creative and imaginative.”

In 2005 the Manitoba Renal Program, based at Seven Oaks, began looking at ways to help dialysis patients be more active physically and, in 2007, was the first program in Canada to create an Exercise and Wellness Coordinator position, hiring Kinesiologist Krista Stewart, who is still with the program today.

Barry Kiriluk cycles at Seven Oaks Hospital while a dialysis machine removes impurities from his blood. The Cycling During Hemodialysis Program is one of three components of the care designated as a Leading Practice in Canada.

Typical hemodialysis patients spend several hours per day three times per week hooked up to a machine that filters impurities from their blood. The Exercise and Wellness program offers Seven Oaks patients the opportunity to use a stationary bicycle while their blood cycles. The Cycling During Hemodialysis Program is currently also available at three satellite hemodialysis units.

A Renal Exercise Clinic, which counsels kidney patients on the benefits, opportunities and safety aspects of physical exercise, was reported on previously in Positively Healthy. Kidney patients can be referred to the clinic where they are seen by a nephrologist, a physiotherapist and a Kinesiologist.

A third component of the Exercise and Wellness program is ten week

education and guided exercise program called Lean Keen Kidney Machines available to patients in all stages of chronic kidney disease. The program is offered in multiple locations in Winnipeg 3-4 times per year including sessions at the Wellness Institute. (See Program Guide page 4). Patients with chronic kidney disease in other parts of Manitoba have also participated by Tele-Health video-conferencing from satellite dialysis centres.

Manitoba Renal Program Director Betty Lou Burke says that preliminary research is showing improved quality of life, strength and flexibility, although detailed analysis is pending.

“We do know that these programs have a significant impact on the physical and mental health of people with Chronic Kidney Disease,” she said. “Patients have reported they can walk further, take the stairs without getting tired, take fewer medications and sleep better.”

The Wellness Institute has received another international accolade this time from the International Council on Active Aging.

Wellness Institute’s Passport to Active Aging campaign designed for Active Aging Week 2011 received a Bronze in the ICAA’s Innovations Awards at its annual conference in Orlando, Florida in November.

The awards recognize programs and marketing that contribute toward

“Changing the Way We Age” (a campaign launched by ICAA in May, 2011) through innovation and excellence. Companies and organizations from around the world entered the competition and attended the event.

The materials for Active Aging Day at Wellness Institute included a mock passport with visas to be stamped after participating in free activity and education stations. The passport also included opportunities for follow-up exercise and educations programs, a quiz and chances to win prizes.

Active Aging Day was organized together with the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA-MB) which is based at Wellness Institute. ALCOA-MB Executive Director Jim Evanchuk who was at the ICAA conference when the award was presented says that Wellness Institute was up against large organizations and marketing companies in the award category.

“It really was an exemplary piece that showcased how to effectively market active aging,” he said. “This underlines the impressive role Wellness Institute has been playing as a leader in fitness and health education for older adults not just in Winnipeg but in North America.”

The Passport to Active Aging and related materials were developed by a team of staff who organized the Active Aging Day events and the materials were designed by Communications Coordinator Jennifer Marshall.

Evanchuk also noted that the award highlights the Wellness Institute team’s growing capacity for training other organizations how to develop, deliver and market programming to older adults. Having ALCOA-MB based at Wellness Institute, fosters more collaboration with member organizations as we continue to champion “Changing the Way We Age” in partnership with the Wellness Institute.
