2015 Position Description

Position: Day Camp Coordinator Day Camp Coordinator Positions only available at Camp Ma-Kee-Wa and Camp Woolsey.

Requirements of Position (must have, or be willing to obtain, to apply for position):

• Willing to be a member of a dynamic staff team of employees and volunteers delivering a girl centered, exciting

camp program experience to girls.

• Willing to participate in all training programs required for this position. Mandatory in-person training will occur

within your contracted dates. A few hours of on-line training will be required to be completed prior to the first

date of contract.

• Available for the full duration of the camp program.

• Provide all required documentation (qualifications & payroll) within the set timeframes identified in letters of

offer, contracts and the Terms of Engagement.

Qualifications (must have, or be willing to obtain, to apply for position):

• Minimum age of 18 years of age however 21 years of age is preferred (for driving camp vehicles and being

insured on these vehicles).

• Minimum of 2 years experience in youth program delivery, preferably obtained at preferably obtained at a day

camp for summer day camp.

• Full G Ontario driver's license or equivalent is preferred.

• Demonstrated experience working with children in a recreational setting.

• Demonstrated ability to work in and lead others in a team atmosphere.

• Experience facilitating staff teams to meet goals.

• Current throughout employment period:

o Standard First Aid including CPR B,

o Criminal Records Check to comply with the requirement of obtaining the equivalent of membership in

Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC).

• Knowledge of the GGC program is an asset.

Reports to: Camp Director (Ma-Kee-Wa) or Program Director (Woolsey)

Supported by: Camping Program Supervisors

Supervises: Day Camp Counsellors and Core Staff assigned to Day Camp

Accommodation:

During Staff Training June 19-July 5th

accommodation is provided on some nights with overnight camp staff. It

will be mandatory to stay over on some nights but optional on other nights. From July 6th

until the end of the

contract no on-site accommodations provided except for during Camper Overnights.

Responsibilities (training on these "responsibilities" will occur before you begin your role):

Section One: General

• Actively participate as a staff member of the camp team in the implementation of the overall camp program

including activities in your area of focus and full camp events.

• Be conversant with the appropriate organizational and governmental requirements for the implementation of

responsibilities. This includes but is not limited to:

o GGC "Safe Guide" (Risk Management),

o GGC, Ontario Council, Employment Contract/Terms of Engagement,

2015 Position Description

o Specific summer camp program opportunities advertised for the summer program 2015 (website),

o Ontario Camps Association Standards,

o Municipal, provincial and industry regulations as they apply to residential camp program options.

• Be an effective role model to campers and colleagues. This includes but is not limited to:

o Living the vision, mission and values of GGC,

o Respectful treatment of all campers/staff,

o Compliance with all rules/regulations/policies,

o Appropriate communication and interactions before, during and after camp,

o Maintaining a clean and safe work/living environment.

• Actively participate in the resolution of concerns that may arise within the team or with campers and implement

appropriate process for the management of such.

• Ensure that the Program Director is notified of any concerns as they arise.

Section Two: Program Leadership

• Develop and oversee the implementation of program options within the Camp Schedule under the leadership of

the Program Director ensuring programming:

o is aligned with GGC philosophy,

o considers safety,

o reflects the description on the web site,

o is active and engaging,

o is fun,

o involves the participants and choice,

o optimizes the use of camp resources,

o is planned ahead of time,

o ensures alternative programming as required (e.g. inclement weather).

• Programming must meet the objectives set out by provincial camp community and staff team.

• Create, schedule and provide leadership of all aspects of the camp program including but not limited to special

events and theme days under the direction of the Program Director.

• Create schedule of down time .5h per person per day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and 1h per person from 10

a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursdays.

• Ensure that all staff reportable to this position are:

o Trained to the appropriate standards,

o Supervised adequately,

o Understand the expectations for the delivery of their responsibilities.

• Oversee the implementation of the program and ensure that all aspects are maintained within the regulations

required by organizational and governmental bodies. When it is identified that an area is not being complied

ensure that this is rectified immediately and ensure that your direct supervisor is apprised of the situation.

• Ensure the implementation of the program includes completion of GGC program work as set out in the base

programming for all branches.

• Ensure all paperwork is provided to the camp office 24 hours prior to the campers' departure.

• Ensure the program areas and associated equipment and supplies are maintained in a safe and useable

condition by empowering staff and participants to take care of their equipment in a friendly manner.

• Align programming with provincial, national or local standards whenever possible so campers are working

towards earning qualifications.

• Develop and implement an effective work environment for the staff to implement a safe, healthy and

challenging program to the campers.

• Ensure all scheduling of activities and subsequent workload is implemented in a fair, equitable manner for all

staff supporting the program options.

2015 Position Description

• Provide supervision to all staff implementing the program and ensure any concerns in their implementation of

responsibilities are identified with your direct supervisor.

• Provide input to the performance appraisal of those staff working within your program team.

• Participate actively in the overall leadership & implementation of the general camp program.

• Provide receipts and reports as required on the activity of the program. This includes but is not limited to:

o Weekly purchase card receipt submissions ,

o End-of-year summary report detailing the needs of the department in future years, supply requests,

staffing needs, maintenance and full inventory of department.

Section Three: Site Responsibilities

• As a member of the site team, ensure that campers are provided with a girl-centered program in a safe and

healthy manner. Ensure that there is branch (age) specific programming as well as full day camp programming.

• As a member of the site team, ensure that campers' needs of security, health and safety are met through the

compliance with the established camp procedures.

• As a member of the site team, ensure that the hygiene and nutrition of campers and self are met.

• Provide direct supervision to the assigned campers.

• Undertake specific responsibilities within the team to ensure the assistance for all components of work are

implemented. This can include but is not limited to:

o First Aider,

o Site Quartermaster or Cook,

o Site Cleaning.

• Participate in the development & implementation of the on-site program and activity schedule for campers.

Ensure that a focus is on keeping the campers active and challenged throughout their time at camp.

• Work with the Program Director to provide in-camp activities for Campers within the typical camp daily/weekly

schedule.

• *Staff members at these camps will have weekends off except for July 4-5. They will also have time off on

Monday August 3rd

. Weekend time off begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and ends at the start of the assigned shift

on Monday mornings.

Notes:

• Assignment to specific areas can be changed as required to effectively deliver the program requirements of a

specific time period. This reassignment is at the discretion of the Camp Director.

• GGC reserves the right to assign employees to assist at camps other than those for which they are hired.

• GGC reserves the right to assign occasional work outside of listed hours with the reciprocation of appropriate

compensation for missed time off.

• Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council reserves the right to amend this job description from time to time.
