Pegasus Horse Deism World War II

During World War II, the silhouetted image of Bellerophon the warrior, mounted on the winged Pegasus, was

adopted by the United Kingdom's newly raised parachute troops in 1941 as their upper sleeve insignia. The image

clearly symbolized a warrior arriving at a battle by air, the same tactics used by paratroopers. The square upper-

sleeve insignia comprised Bellerophon/Pegasus in light blue on a maroon background. The insignia was designed

by famous English novelist Daphne du Maurier, who was married to the commander of the 1st Airborne Division

(and later the expanded British Airborne Forces), General Frederick "Boy" Browning. According to The British Army

Website, the insignia was designed by Major Edward Seago in May 1942. The maroon background on the insignia

was later used again by the Airborne Forces when they adopted the famous maroon beret in Summer 1942. The

beret was the origin of the German nickname for British airborne troops, The Red Devils. Today's Parachute

Regiment carries on the maroon beret tradition.

During the airborne phase of the Normandy invasion on the night of 5 –6 June 1944, British 6th Airborne Division

captured all its key objectives in advance of the seaborne assault, including the capture and holding at all costs of a

vital bridge over the Caen Canal, near Ouistreham. In memory of their tenacity, the bridge has been known ever

    since as Pegasus Bridge.

The Tuscan National Liberation Committee during the German occupation of Italy also had a Pegasus as its

emblem. The winged horse is still featured on the Tuscan flag and coat of arms.

Farewell the neighing steed and the shrill trump,

    The spirit-stirring drum, th'ear-piercing fife,

The royal banner, and all quality,

Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war![1]

Like a proud music that draws men on to die

Madly upon the spears in martial ecstasy,

A measure that sets heaven in all their veins

    And iron in their hands.

    I hear the Nation march

    Beneath her ensign as an eagle's wing;

    O'er shield and sheeted targe

The banners of my faith most gaily swing;Moving to victory with solemn noise,

With worship and with conquest, and the voice of  myriads.

proclaiming the "shows of things" (Maine's quotation marks):[4] the naïve

assumption that the splendid show of military pageantry—"Pomp"—has no connection with the drabness and terror—"Circumstance"—of actual

warfare.[2] The first four marches were all written before the events of  World

War I shattered that belief, and the styles in which wars were

written about spurned the false romance of the battle-song.[2]

    US Air Force Tanker

The US Air Force KC-46A tanker is named for Pegasus.[13]

On 4 October 1943, Himmler referred explicitly to the extermination of the Jewish people during a secret

SS meeting in the city of  Poznań (Posen). The following is a translation of an excerpt from a transcriptionof an audio recording [77] that exists of the speech:

I also want to refer here very frankly to a very difficult matter. We can now very openly talk about thisamong ourselves, and yet we will never discuss this publicly. Just as we did not hesitate on 30 June 1934, to perform our duty as ordered and put comrades who had failed up against the wall and execute them, we

also never spoke about it, nor will we ever speak about it.

Let us thank God  that we had within us enough self-evident fortitude never to discuss it among us, and we never talkedabout it. Every one of us was horrified, and yet every one clearly understood that we would do it next

time, when the order is given and when it becomes necessary. I am now referring to the evacuation of theJews, to the extermination of the Jewish People. This is something that is easily said: 'The Jewish Peoplewill be exterminated', says every Party member, 'this is very obvious, it is in our program —  elimination

of the Jews, extermination, a small matter.' And then they turn up, the upstanding 80 million Germans, and each one has his decent Jew. They say the others are all swine, but this particular one is a splendidJew. But none has observed it, endured it. Most of you here know what it means when 100 corpses lie

next to each other, when there are 500 or when there are 1,000. To have endured this and at the same timeto have remained a decent person —  with exceptions due to human weaknesses —  has made us tough,

and is a glorious chapter that has not and will not be spoken of. Because we know how difficult it would

be for us if we still had Jews as secret saboteurs, agitators and rabble rousers in every city, what with the bombings, with the burden and with the hardships of the war. If the Jews were still part of the German

nation, we would most likely arrive now at the state we were at in 1916 and '17 . . . . — Heinrich Himmler, 4 October 1943
