Tournament highlights
Europe gained ground on South America in terms of the number of FIFA Confederations Cup titles won. UEFA representatives account for four titles compared with CONMEBOL’s five, while Mexico claimed the other one for CONCACAF.

Germany are the fourth reigning world champions to win the Confederations Cup after Brazil in 1997, France
in 2001 and Brazil again in 2005.
This edition continued the hoodoo of no foreign coach having won a Confederations Cup.
Germany are the youngest team to win the Confederations Cup, averaging 24 years and four months old.

Leon Goretzka scored the competition’s earliest brace against Mexico, netting in the 6th and 8th minutes to eclipse the record of Gabriel Batistuta, who struck in the 3rd and 10th minutes against Côte d’Ivoire in 1992.

More tournament highlights
Chile are the oldest team to have graced the competition, averaging 29 years and one month, which surpasses Uruguay’s record of 28 years and eight months set in 2013.
No fewer than four players entered the competition’s top-ten list of oldest scorers. They are Portugal’s Pepe in
second place (34 years and 126 days) behind Lothar Matthaeus (38 years and 129 days in 1999), compatriot Ricardo Quaresma in fifth (33 years and 265 days), Mexico’s Oribe Peralta in sixth (33/160) and Russian Alexander Samedov in tenth (32/340).
During Mexico-New Zealand on 21 June, Dane Ingham (#16 photo below) became the event’s all-time second-
youngest player at the age of 18 years and 13 days, behind his compatriot Chris Wood, who was 17 years and 192 days old when he took to the field in 2009. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)
In the defeat by Portugal in the play-off for third place, Mexico’s Rafael Marquez (photo) became the competition’s second-oldest player at the age of 38 years and 139 days, behind Tunisian Ali Boumnijel who was 39 years and 66 days old when he played in the 2005 edition. Other top-ten entries in this edition were Australia’s Tim Cahill in fifth (37 years and 201 days) and Chile’s Johnny Herrera in tenth with 36 years and 44 days. (Photo by Ian Walton/Getty Images)
Englishman Anthony Hudson (photo right) set a new benchmark as the competition’s youngest coach, having kicked off New Zealand’s campaign at the tender age of 36 years and 98 days, bettering the previous record set by Nigerian Shaibu Amodu (36/263) in 1995. Meanwhile, Belgian tactician Hugo Broos (photo below) became the event’s fourth-oldest coach, leading Cameroon aged 65 years and 76 days. Portuguese strategist Fernando Santos entered the old-timers’ list in
eighth place at the age of 62 years and 265 days. Top of the ranking is still German coach Otto Rehhagel, who was 66 years and 317 days old when he managed Greece in the 2005 edition. (Photo by Alex Grimm - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)

More tournament highlights
Five of the 16 games played during the 2017 finals were drawn, which is the highest number for any single edition in the competition’s history.
Before Russia, the last host team to be eliminated in the group round were Korea Republic in 2001.
Mexico moved closer to Brazil’s tournament record for matches played (27 to 33), whereas Australia joined
Japan in third place on 16. Mexico increased their tally of victories in the Confederations Cup to 11 games, becoming the second side to
enter double figures, behind Brazil who remain on 23.
Portugal’s run of 354 minutes without conceding, which was ended by Luis Neto’s own goal in the play-off for third place against Mexico, is the fifth-longest run of invincibility in the history of the Confederations Cup. The record of 572 minutes was set by Cameroon between 2001 and 2003. Portuguese stopper Rui Patricio was between the sticks for all of those 354 minutes, taking him up to fourth in the competition's goalkeeping hall of fame, behind Dida (503), Oswaldo Sanchez (368) and Carlos Kameni (367).
In the semi-final against Chile, Portugal became the first team in Confederations Cup history to fail to score in a penalty shoot-out due to three saves by Chile’s Claudio Bravo. (Photo by Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images)
In this edition, Mexico set a new tournament benchmark for the longest sequence of matches without a clean sheet, having conceded in their last ten games and counting.
Chile set a precedent by chalking up the most consecutive draws in a Confederations Cup, with three in a
row.
New Zealand are still without a win following their fourth Confederations Cup participation, which leaves the All Whites with a record of one draw and 11 defeats. The Oceanian team are also enduring the longest barren spell in the tournament’s history, having played 555 minutes without scoring.

Continental showdown
The FIFA Confederations Cup is held every four years and in recent times, it has been seen as a warm-up event in the host country of the next FIFA World Cup. The FIFA Confederations Cup aims to give the top teams from all continents a chance to represent their region in a world play-off, and this opportunity – together with the handsome prize money that goes with it – is particularly important and appealing to teams from certain developing football continents.
History
The FIFA Confederations Cup was first designated a FIFA competition in December 1997 when it was held in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Previously there had been two other tournaments in Riyadh, in 1992 and 1995, under the title of the Intercontinental Championship of the King Fahd Cup.
In 1992, the winners were Argentina, then reigning South American champions. They came with a star-studded team including Batistuta, Redondo, Caniggia and Simeone and carried off the trophy after defeating the host country Saudi Arabia, despite their tremendous support from the home fans, in the final. The other two teams taking part on that occasion were the USA and Côte d’Ivoire.
Six teams took part in the 1995 competition and this time it was Denmark who took the honours, with strong performances from the Laudrup brothers earning them victory over Argentina. Mexico and Nigeria made it to the semi-finals, while Japan and the host country Saudi Arabia were eliminated after losing both of their group matches.
In 1997, Brazil promptly stamped their authority on the competition to win the striking new gold trophy. One of the main purposes of the tournament was clearly demonstrated when Australia made it to the final to take on the then world champions.
In 1999, the Mexicans richly deserved to win the cup as one of two teams unbeaten in the group stage to make it to the final. The home ”Azteca” factor – Mexico had not been beaten there for 18 years – could not be ignored. Brazil lived up to expectations as their talent factory continued to produce outstanding players. The tournament also witnessed a standard of goalkeepers seldom seen in a single tournament with the likes of Keller (USA), Campos (MEX), Dida (BRA) and Utting (NZL) competing. Surprise packages Saudi Arabia recovered after a 5-1 thrashing by Mexico in their opening match to qualify for the semi-finals, following a 5-1 win in an all-Arab clash with Egypt. The USA defeated giants Germany only to later narrowly fail to a golden goal by Mexico’s top scorer Blanco. New Zealand went home happy after gamely facing up to Germany and the USA.
In Korea/Japan in 2001, a near-capacity crowd of over 65,000 saw world champions France defeat co-hosts Japan with the only goal of the final to win the tournament and complete an unprecedented hat-trick of three major trophies in just four years. But they had to defend resolutely at times as Japan staged a second-half fight-back.
In 2003, defending and European champions France hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup, organising matches in three of the 1998 World Cup stadiums – Lyons, St Etienne and Paris/St Denis. Brazil had to accept an early flight home after the group stage, bowing out of a tough group of strong performers in the shape of Cameroon, Turkey and the USA. The revitalised hosts, on the other hand, won their group. Turkey consolidated their rise as a global football power and only just missed out on a place in the final. The event was overshadowed by the tragic death of Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, whose team-mates conceded the title to France by a whisker in an emotionally charged final against an equally shaken French side.
Despite the absence of superstar striker Ronaldo from the FCC 2005, Brazil dazzled in an exciting final against rivals Argentina to lift the trophy for the second time. Adriano gained justified recognition as a force to be reckoned with, earning both the adidas Golden Ball and Golden Shoe awards. While Argentina’s defeat was hard to take, their performance clearly showed a hint of great things to come with the competition shining a spotlight on the magical skills of their key player, Riquelme. The competition also displayed German prowess in the shape of a well-organised dry run for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ and the emergence of a young and promising German team – in particular, the partnership of up-and-coming starlets Podolski and Schweinsteiger – under the watchful eye of footballing legend Jürgen Klinsmann, enabling them to secure third-place in a thrilling extra time play-off against Mexico.

History continued
In 2009, for the first time in the history of the FIFA Confederations Cup, the event took place on African soil. South Africa certainly proved themselves capable of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and impressively presented some of their World Cup host cities – Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Mangaung/Bloemfontein und Tshwane/Pretoria. The gripping tournament in South Africa ended with a worthy final in Johannesburg with both Brazil and the USA battling for the title. After a 3-2 victory, it was Brazil who lifted the trophy for the third time.
Genial skills, wonder goals and thrilling games, an average match attendance of over 50,000, incomparable atmospheres in the stadiums - the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 was not just a success, it was a definitely overwhelming one. With Brazil’s 3-0 win in the final over FIFA World Cup holders Spain they lifted the cup for the fourth time - their third consecutive FIFA Confederations Cup victory.
The FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 ended with a final that lived up to the expectations generated by the tournament. Germany lifted the trophy with the youngest team to win a Confederations Cup, averaging 24 years and four months and finishing with more victories than any other side. Chile’s players surely made them work for it: La Roja enjoyed over 60 per cent of possession in the final and had 21 attempts on the goal.

FIFA Confederations Cup Winner’s Trophy
Designer Fritz Jucker, Zurich, Switzerland Manufacturer Europokal, Volketswil/Switzerland Beat Meixger Schumacher Goldschmied, Buelach/Switzerland Walter Schumacher Description The FIFA Confederations Cup Official Trophy is representative of the tournament’s theme ‘Festival of
Champions’. Two gold ribbons are wrapped around the central body in a festive, dynamic movement. They visually connect the six medallions arranged around the upper segment of the base – each bearing the name of one Confederation – with the globe. The globe references the six continents whose national teams participate in this FIFA tournament.
The Trophy recently underwent a touch of modernisation and was fitted with a re-designed, cone-shaped base to complement the family of FIFA trophies. Year of design 1997 Material Bronze, gold plated Base: Lapis lazuli, ebony Weight 8.6 kg Height 40.0 cm Base diameter 16.0 cm Widest point 16.0 cm
