CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW

While working as a graphic designer for the City of Sunrise, I was tasked to create multiple banners that would be placed on lampposts around the city as part of a beautification initiative the city decided to pursue. The goal was to showcase the prominent landmarks around the city, such as the Sawgrass Mills Mall and the BB&T Center.

A BANNER OLD TIME

This campaign was one of my favorites. There really was no limit on my creativity. I just needed to brighten up the city with a few colorful banners while still being representative of each department.

I had a lot of fun sketching out ideas for the fire department banner. I did throw around the idea of a cat stuck in a tree, but the City of Sunrise went with the banner to far left, although that first idea still brings a smile to my face.

A BANNER OLD TIME (CONT’D)

This campaign was very close to my heart. I was born and raised in the City of Sunrise, and I spent most of my summers painting and acting dramatically at the Civic Center.

I attended many a Girl Scout meeting at Welleby Park and played out countless spy missions with my three siblings under the Welleby tarp . It was an honor to work on this project for the City.

2013 • WORD UP! POETRY SLAM

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW

While working for the City of Sunrise, I created a new, updated logo for the 2013 Word Up! Poetry Slam. The campaign targets Broward County high school students who have a passion for words and self-expression. Since the flyer would be placed in high schools in the county, bright colors were implemented to help draw interest to the event.

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW

I designed the following four posters as a way to promote the City of Sunrise’s seasonal activities. Among them were holiday camps where kids could come and participate in crafts and social activities. I had the most fun making the fall activity posters because designing the turkeys on the next page were just so much fun! And the color scheme I chose just made everything pop!

DESIGN OVERVIEW

One of my favorite designs I got to work on as a Senior Designer for FSU’s Oglesby Union Marketing was a promotional playing card for FSU’s collegiate Flying High Circus. Moreover, I learned a lot skill-wise creating this card!

DESIGN OVERVIEW

While interning at the City of Sunrise, I worked on various safety initiatives. One of my projects was to create a coloring book page to hand out to kids that was fun and informative. The premise behind this coloring page was that the dragon had sneezed and set the house on fire. The page features safe meeting places.

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW

As part of a class project, my group was tasked with creating a campaign for any political office. Our candidate was group mate Melissa Newman, running for Governor in 2014. We created two radio spots, social media pages, yard signs and three direct mail pieces.

THE PROCESS

Our goal for the design was to portray a feeling of a new, fresh start. The slogan I created was a play on our candidate’s last name: Newman - A New Vision. A New Approach. We wanted our candidate to seem approachable and bold. We wanted her to be a fresh face among old politicians. Because she was a new face, getting name recognition was essential. Based on our criteria and our objective, we chose bright and bold hues of the classic patriotic colors: red, white and blue. This, along with consistent design across platforms and a catchy slogan, would help get our candidate into office.

DIRECT MAIL PIECE #3

For this piece, we really wanted to increase voter turnout. From our research, we found that at the end of the day, democrats and republicans are going to vote according to their respective parties, and there wasn’t much we could do to change this. When it came down to it, name recognition and voter turnout were the biggest factors in determining who won a gubernatorial election.

To increase voter turnout, we decided to send this mail piece out as a friendly reminder to vote regardless of what party someone chose to stand with. We included a personalized nonpartisan message on the back of this piece and directed voters to find more information about their vote on the front of the piece. The mail piece also conveniently displays our candidate’s branding, a subtle reminder to vote for her on November 4th.

CLIENT: Glidden

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW

I worked with a team of four others to research the Glidden brand and its competitors. Using the guidelines and case study written out in the 2012 NSAC competition packet, we created a brief and got to work. My primary role outside research was design. I created the print ads seen on the next couple of pages.

THE PRINT ADS

These print ads would be featured as spreads in select magazines; each are different based on the individual target audiences. Each print ad features a room that has undergone “a fresh start” using Glidden paint products. Examples are featured showing how you can take a seemingly simple piece and turn it into a cornerstone of conversation. Whether it’s reupholstering a hand me down crib or redesigning an old picture frame, the ideas are truly endless.

All spreads showcase the vibrant Glidden paint colors while directing the viewer to the brand’s social media pages.

DESIGN OVERVIEW

Here is another one of the posters I was able to create for the City of Sunrise to promote their community activities. This specific event was geared toward targeting middle and high school students, so we wanted to go with a design that wasn’t too kiddy or cheesy. We wanted it to catch eyes and encourage students to participate in the event.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The creation of my personal brand has been an ongoing process. I started back in 2012 developing a logo and determining what style, color and feel I wanted my brand to reflect. In the end I liked simplicity, and so I chose to go with a more minimalistic and clean approach. I felt this red/pink hue most embodied me, and, in the end, it’s the color I settled on to represent my brand.

Dear Fanatics:I have the attitude, the drive and the passion necessary to thrive in this industry, and I apply it to

everything I do. My name is Alyssa Ostroff, and I am currently a senior at Florida State University,

double-majoring in Advertising and Marketing. I am set to graduate December 2013.

So, why am I writing you? I want to fully experience the marketing industry and push myself to

the limits, so I am looking for an job where I can challenge myself and produce amazing work. I

believe an career with Fanatics can help me realize these goals. Not only am I a creative person, but I am very goal-oriented, as one must be in marketing. I follow

through on tasks and meet all deadlines. As a former Supervisor and DJ at WKPX, I have the

discipline, work ethic and communication skills. As a former Writer and Photographer for Sun-

Sentinel’s Teenlink, I know how to meet a deadline and work well with others, especially in a

group setting. In addition to working at my current job as a Graphic Designer, I have gained a lot of experience

from working on advertising campaigns for my Creative Strategy II class. I was put in charge of

a team of five (each member with a strong, clashing personality) with an advertising objective, a

brief, and a due date for our final campaign presentation. Then we were set loose.

It was during this class that I learned how to delegate tasks based on my teammates’ strengths, make

final decisions, set milestones and due dates for deliverables, break up fights, get everyone back

on track, and get the job done well (all the while producing the creative pieces for our campaign -

digital, print, and out-of-home). I was a creative, a leader, a referee, a planner, a nagger, a secretary,

a mother, and occasionally a pizza delivery woman. To sum it up, I was an Advertiser, a Project

Manager - a Marketer.I am applying for the Graphic Design position because I have the skill set, I know what I want out

of my career, and I know I would flourish in the environment that Fanatics provides. If you would

like to view some pieces from my portfolio, please visit: alyssaostroff.com.Thank you for you time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

STEP 1 • GATHER INSPIRATION

01

OVERVIEW

The first step I always take when starting a new project is to gather inspiration. Whether it’s through Pinterest or Google or an advertisement, I like to find a few examples of pieces that truly inspire me and have a style I would like to emulate.

For the City of Sunrise’s beautification campaign banners, I found inspiration in a few travel posters comprised of very simple graphics. The style was clean and simple and the bright colors were something that was encouraged by my client.

Page 47: Portfolio2013 web

DESIGN PROCESS

STEP 2 • FIND REFERENCE PHOTOS

02

OVERVIEW

Once the vision for the campaign was locked in, I set to finding reference photos to base my sketches off of, I found some images of the iconic saucers just outside the BB&T Center and got to sketching out a few designs.

REFERENCE PHOTOS

Page 48: Portfolio2013 web

03

STEP 3 • SKETCH IT OUT!

OVERVIEW

Now, of course I have this awesome image in mind for what I want the final product to look like, but it never hurts to sketch it out. It also shows your client the direction you are thinking of heading in so you can collect feedback before you enter the vectoring process. After sketching a couple possible designs out, I decided to go with an angled shot of the BB&T saucer.

QUICK SKETCH TO GET OUT MY IDEAS

Page 49: Portfolio2013 web

DESIGN PROCESS

04

STEP 4 • VECTOR

OVERVIEW

Once my idea is approved, I like to create my color palette before I begin vectoring. I pulled some bright shades of blues and greens and went to work on drawing the basic shapes. I then went on to add in the details of the shading and shifted my graphics around on the artboard until I had a nice image that contained all the visual elements I set out to achieve. And voila! Above are the two versions I came up with!

FINAL IMAGES

Page 50: Portfolio2013 web

OVERVIEW

Once the image has been vectored, it’s time to make sure the artwork has been approved by the client and that the file is ready for print. After the image has been sent to the printer, the most exciting part happens. Your creation becomes a reality. No longer is it just a 2D graphic on a computer screen but a waving flag, a living piece of artwork. This is the main reason I love working in the creative industry. It’s seeing an idea scribbled on corner of scrap paper transform into an actual, usable piece of art.
