IntroductionWithin the following pages is enclosed a selection of design work I have produced over the past few years.The projects cover a broad selection of interests, from architecture to webdesign and graphic productions. Most of which I worked on during my architectural studies at the Technical University of Delft and the internships I had at architectural offices during that period. Hopefully this will provide a decent impression of my capabilities.

Design Museum - Amsterdam ZuidasIn collaboration with three fellow students we worked on this design for a museum in the Zuidas district in Amsterdam. The programme combined four exhibition areas, as well as an auditorium, storage rooms and a cafetaria. Apart from participating in design proces, I also worked on fitting the installations neatly into the building, ensuring fire safety and detailing light installations.

Scheveningen harbourThe fish industry is moving away from the Scheveningen harbour leaving the old distribution and auction buildings empty. We analysed the potentionals of the area for an urban plan and investigated possibilities for sustainable systems to integrate, like helophyte filters and sun energy. The final design consisted of apparments and commercial functions, combined with parking facilities in the dunes and two tourist routes connecting The Hague with Scheveningen beach.

Retail DesignScrézio shoes (Italian for 'friction'), are designed for the texture of the ground they touch upon. In their flagship store, the shoes are showcased on the specific surface materials they're designed for; from asphalt or pavement to classic wooden floors. While trying out the shoes you will feel these textures first-hand. The store has a freeflow routing around sharp triangular furniture for the shoes. The upper level contains mainly indoor shoes, suited for softer or wooden floors while the groundfloor houses the outdoor collection for rough surfaces.

de schoenen van screzio zijn ontworpen voor de ondergrond waar ze op lopen: iedere ondergrond heeft een andere textuur met variënde weerstand. de zolen van screzio schoenen zijn vormgegeven voor het type ondergrond waar met de schoen op gelopen zal worden.

in de volksmond: scré-shoe

beleving

ieder schoentype kent zijn eigen ‘favoriete’ onder-grond. in de screzio shoestore kan je de structuur van iedere unieke ondergrond aan den lijve onder-vinden.

tijdens het passen van de schoen kan je zitten op de etalage meubels die voorzien zijn van afwisselende originele bestratings materialen.

in de winkel vind een tweedeling plaats in het assortiment.

de eerste verdieping etaleert schoenen die ontworpen zijn om voornamelijk binnen te dragen. schoenen voor gladde ondergronden.

de begane grond presenteert schoenen die veel buiten gedragen zullen worden. schoenen voor ruwe ondergronden.

Exposure in private dwellingThe private art collection of the owners was leading for the design. Prominently sticking out over the entrance, the exhibition room draws attention, yet stays oriented towards the inside and is lit from above. A routing leads the user around a central functional core deeper into the dwelling. From the public workspace with showcase window on ground floor, through the exhibition space to the private area's in the top of the building, everytime moving towards the light. A small museum yet comfortable to live in.

These people can now ‘shop’ for additional living space in an off-site location in the Robin Hood Gardens.. These rooms will be fully furnished for a specific use and ready to use at arrival. By involving strong brands to equip the rooms with their latest products, they are not only a pleasure to use, but also a permanent advertisement for these brands. Which room will you get?

extention of their home is often not possible either due to lack of space around

their home or financial means. These people can now ‘shop’ for additional living

space in an off-site location in the Robin Hood Gardens.. These rooms will be

fully furnished for a specific use and ready to use at arrival. By involving strong

brands to equip the rooms with the latest products, they are not only a pleasure

to use, but also a permanent advertisement for these brands. To complete the

shopping experience, most rooms are either part or completely transparent to

ensure product visibility for unoccupied rooms ánd provide a glimps of the wide

variety of uses while walking towards the room of your choice.

Considering it’s commercial character, we placed the building

along the highway’s entrance to the Blackwall Tunnel to

ensure a certain amount of visibility.

The flow of pedestrians through the Robin Hood Gardens

formed a natural entrance to the building. A third opening has

been created towards the West as entrance for vehicles.

Combining work and lifeViewport residences Chicago is a building that offers starting businesses and freelancers an affordable and flexible work- and living space. The building contains studio's and residences for the Small Or Home Office (SOHO). These are combined with a business center in the plinth of the building, providing meeting rooms, a conference hall, networking bar as well as several shops accomodating the business user. The placement of the towers provides views on the lake for nearly all apartments, as well as a viewcorridor to downtown Chicago.

Renovation and extention monumental houseThis small worker house on the Berkheistraat in Wassenaar, near The Hague, had been neglected for years and was therefor in a bad state. Though due to the monumental facade that faced the street, demolition wasn't one of the options.A plan was developed to renovate the house by changing the floor plan and adding a new, contrasting object to the back of the house to create more space. This new volume, inspired by Philip Johnson's Glass House, added about 60m2 to the house and included a large basement.

Den Haag, Fred. Hendriklaan 17

De keuken in dit oude pand in Den Haag, voldeed niet aan de wensen van de nieuwe bewoners. Ze vonden de keuken eigenlijk iets te klein, en ze wilden graag meer relatie met de woonkamer.Verschillende oplossingen voor indeling en plaatsing van openingen naar de woonkamer zijn tijdens het ontwerpproces de revu gepasseerd.Mijn werk omvatte het maken van de verschillende plattegronden die hiermee gepaard gingen. Daarbij heb ik me beziggehouden met de artist impressions van de nieuwe situatie(s). Dit had de opdrachtgever nadrukkelijk gevraagd, daar hij moeite had zich in te leven in de ruimtelijkheid van de verschillende voorstellen. De 3d-beelden hielpen om een beter beeld te krijgen en zo betere beslisingen te maken.Uiteindelijk is de deuropening naar de woonkamer vergroot tot een open verbinding van 1230mm breed. Tevens is de deur van de toilet verplaatst naar een andere wand, zodat deze in de gang uitkomt, en niet langer in de keuken. De voorraadkast die aan de toilet grensde (nog herkenbaar door de pennant vlak bij de toilet) is weggesloopt om de keuken meer ruimte te geven. Deze gewonnen ruimte is gebruikt om de koelkast tussen te plaatsen.Bij oplevering ben ik nog langsgeweest bij de familie om het eindresultaat te bezichtigen, wat nagenoeg gelijk was aan de impressies die ik voor ze gemaakt had.

Extention monumental houseAn elderly couple had purchased this house, and had a wish to cover the patio, connecting the garage and the livingroom. The extention contains mainly glass and opens up towards a newly created tarrace. The construction rests on four columns, preventing additional loads onto the existing surrounding structures.We also removed a few internal walls in order to create a larger living room with open kitchen, and added a dormer window for the main bedroom.

Den Haag, Javastraat 78

Het project in de Javastraat te Den Haag omvatte het plaatsen van een nieuw dakkapel in het penthouse appartement.Aangezien dit het eerste project(je) was waar ik in betrokken was, en ik nog volop bezig was me te orienteren in het tekenprogramma Vectorworks, heb ik hiervoor geen bouwtechnische tekeningen gemaakt.Mijn bijdrage omvatte de VO tekeningen van de gevel (bestaande en nieuwe situatie), een situatietekening aan de hand van beschikbaar kaartmateriaal en een locatiebezoek voor het begeleidende beeldmateriaal. Doordat dit zo’n klein project was, had ik de vrijheid om bekend te raken met Vectorworks, en ondertussen toch al het een en ander te leren over de andere projecten die op dat moment liepen.

SITUATIE

Stylos - study association Faculty of Architecture An overhaul of the Stylos website was long overdue, so during my board membership I have worked with two fellow boardmembers on a new community website for Stylos. Aside from a new look and feel, we worked on a new struction in which content is provided by committee members (user-generated), who can update information on their own committee pages. Items they publish there, are automatically pushed to the frontpage and added to a complete overview of activities and newsitems.

Cities full of spaceRudy Uytenhaak published a book about his research into the densities of the built environment called ‘Cities full of space, qualities of density’. I was asked to create a website to promote and highlight sections of the book. In addition to providing promotional information, the website also functioned as an extention to the book, providing additional online extra’s such as an interactive spreadsheets for density calculations, video’s and links to other related websites.

Rudy Uytenhaak ArchitectsThe former website was in need of an update, so I was asked to investigate the options (both visual and technical) for renewal of the website. They decided to postpone creating an entirely new website, but rather upgrade the current version. We ended up applying a new color scheme to the website and adding new features to the website to improve the way images are displayed and project documentation is viewed online.

Pantheon// - architecture magazineThe Pantheon// is a non-profit architecture magazine published by students of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Delft. For one year I have been editor in chief and published five editions during this period. The function consisted of overlooking layout, gathering advertisements to pay for the printing costs and working on articles together with the committee members. Every edition is published with over two thousand copies and is distributed at the Technical University of Delft, the National Architecture Institute in Rotterdam and local architecture practices.

Nederlandse architectenbureaus komen in opstand tegen de manier waarop opdrachten voor openbare gebouwen in Nederland tot stand komen. Wat is er mis met de Europese aanbesteding?

Europees aanbesteden

De tijd dat een opdrachtgever simpelweg zijn favoriete architect uit

kon zoeken voor zijn nieuwe onderkomen, lijkt steeds verder naar

de achtergrond te zakken. Tegenwoordig wordt de opdrachtgever

namelijk verplicht Europees aan te besteden wanneer zijn gebouw

boven een bepaald budget komt.

De bedoeling van de Europese aanbesteding is om de markt voor

meer architecten open te gooien; om opdrachten juist ook voor de

kleine en beginnende bureaus toegankelijk te maken. Op het moment

gebeurt geregeld het tegenovergestelde. Bij selectieprocedures

kijken opdrachtgevers slechts naar twee dingen: ten eerste gaan ze

alleen in zee met architectenbureaus die over een aantal jaren een

hoge omzet hebben gehaald, en ten tweede geven ze alleen opdracht

aan die bureaus die al eens eerder een dergelijke school, museum of

stadhuis hebben gerealiseerd.

Door de BNA werd hier als voorbeeld een opdracht in de gemeente

Recent nog liep een Europese aanbesteding volledig uit de hand.

Bij de selectieprocedure voor het nieuwe stadhuis van de gemeente

Westland, trokken zeven van de twaalf architectenbureaus zich terug

uit de selectie. Het waren niet de minste architecten. Onder andere

Mecanoo, Jo Coenen (oud-Rijksbouwmeester), Claus en Kaan en

Kraaivanger-Urbis.

Wat was dan het geval? Bij elke Europese aanbesteding vindt er

een voorselectie plaats van vijf tot zeven kandidaten op basis van

relevante ervaring, stabiliteit en omvang. Daarna volgt een tweede

ronde, waarbij elke partij een visiepresentatie geeft (nog geen

daadwerkelijk ontwerp). Bij de gemeente Westland werden er maar

liefst twaalf bureaus geselecteerd om een visiepresentatie te geven.

Deze moesten specifiek antwoord geven op de opgave door middel

van schetsen en referentiebeelden.

Tegen ieders verwachting in werd hierna echter nog geen winnende

architect gekozen. Men besloot tot een derde ronde, waarin vijf

bureaus gevraagd zouden worden een schetsontwerp en een

maquette te maken. Echter, na de gevraagde informatie nauwkeurig

Stylos - study association Faculty of ArchitectureAs boardmember of the study association Stylos we started of creating a new corporate identity. The old logo didn't function well on new publication media and we felt the committees weren't very visible; people would visit a lecture or participate in a workshop, but wouldn't know both were organised by Stylos.We came up with a new logo that gave Stylos a fresh image. On top of that every committy received it's own recognisable icon that, combined with the new logo, will be featured on all publication material.

Maastoren Rotterdam - exhibition and lectureDuring my time at the Faculty of Architecture I have organised a lecture by all participating parties on the Maastoren project in Rotterdam, soon to be the tallest office building in the Netherlands.As introduction to the lecture, the architectural office Dam & Partners helped set up an exhibition on the project with detailed information on presentation panels and the scale model of the new skyscraper.

Groninger Forum - exhibition and lectureIn collaboration with Stylos, I organised an exhibition on the architect selection of the Groninger Forum project; the new city hall for the city of Groningen.For this project seven national and international architects had been asked to provide a design. The exhibition featured all seven scale models, large panels explaining each design and the project documentation provided by the architects. This was combined with a lecture by Kamiel Klaasse from NL Architects (the winner of the architect selection) and Joris Pauwels from Zaha Hadid Architects
