Work LampThe work lamp is the culmination of a long process involving material ex-ploration, ideation and prototyping. The final form is a distillation of the elements of a hanging lamp into it’s essential parts aided by technology. The lamp uses high power LEDs with a wide viewing angle to give the per-fect amount of light to any situation. It is controlled wirelessly by a desk piece that allows the user to dim, turn on/off and switch modes.

The work lamp allows the user to quickly and easily adjust their workspace to the perfect light. The wireless dimmer is a subtle presence on a desk and allows for full range dimming, as well as on/off switch and the abillity to change to ambient light mode witha long press.

Ambient light mode uses a light sensor to automatically adjust the light depending on the other light in the room or daylight. It allows you to set your preferred light, and never have to think about adjust-ing your light again.

The light is programnmed using two arduino micro boards talking with a 413mhz receiever/transmiter pair. It is wired to the LED power source to modulate and dim throuh PWM when he value of the dimmer changes. A small LED on the dimmer displays the current setting and light level

PixlWhat if you could print directly and locally from your phone without ink in an effiecient manner? Pixl can be used for entertainment or for work. It provides a plat-form for quick easy and cheap prints right from the palm of your hand.

The Prototype

1 bit camera

The prototype for this device was made to test the cababbilities of thermal printers as a method for ptinting images and text. Gadgeteer, an electronics platform, coded with c++. And components from Spark-fun.

Pixl could be a univeral print device for all camera apps, or act like a POS receipt printer for services like square

Thermal Printing technology is combined with simple image processing software. The device would have a rechargeable Li-on batery and easy quick replacement roles of paper.

Current mobile phone technology becomes obsolete after two years on average. Bringing mobile phone technolo-gy into the future requires systematic rethinking of the goals and possibilities of our current technology and manufacturing techniques. This can lead to hardware that is interchange-able, that learns from use, that changes over time, that degrades gracefully and that works naturally. User interac-tion with mobile devices are also on the cusp of re-definition as new wearble computing change how we interact and see the world around us.

The idea of evolutionary or continuous design comes from programming practices developed for complex systems. It is a practice of creating and modifying the design of a system as it is developed. Another interesting model is machine learning. This is a branch of artificial intelligence concerned with the design and development of algorithms that take empirical data, such as that from sensors or databases, and yield patterns or predictions that represent the underlying mechanism that generated the data.

I would like to apply this thinking in conjunction with smart materials and bio-tech to explore how processes of manufacturing and consuming mobile phone technology will change in the near future. This project to will consider: Materi-als that fulfill these ideals, systems that fulfill these ideas, business models that fulfill these ideas, user models that explore the consequences.

Mission Statement

Mobile consumer electronics is the fastest growing market of consumer products today. It is esitmated that ther are around 10 billion consumer electronics devices the world over. Users of these devices rely heavily on their usage. From daily business tasks, to entertainment, to essentials like mobile banking. Users expect and need electronics that work in any environment, fit many changing needs, and fit their lifestyle.

The User

Factory workers who produce consumer electronics today are working long hours, with low pay, low benefits and in sometimes hazardous conditions. Laws and regulations are changing some of this slowly, but more can be done to put the workers, not in the position of assebly lines, but into skilled positions with better pay and healtier lifestyles.

The WorkerOur home is not one of unlimited resources. We need to figure out a way to reduce, re-use and recycle our materials. Current mobile technology goes obsolete in about 2 years, leading to waste and pollution from heavy metals, and a system where only x% of materials are recovered. The reduction of waste not only lies in the technolo-gy and materials of electronics, but also in social behavior and con-sumer expectations.

The Planet

Companies like Apple, Samsung and Nokia are some of the most important staeholders because they care about profits and innova-tion. It is important to consider cost and product likecycles in a busi-ness plan that would drive profits, not cut them. But allow the compa-nies to compete not on slight upgrades, but focus on real innova-tive features.

For instance MIT has succeeded in “merge traffic coming over Wi-Fi and cell phone networks rather than forcing devices to switch between the two frequencies.”They have also increased bandwith 16x current rates and expanding covergae of rural areas.[1]

“Its two panels have a closing radius of only 1mm, meaning they practically touch when closed, yet show no visible crease when opened.” It can also be folded thousands of times with minimal consequence. [2]

“Organic transistors, as their name sug-gests, are made of carefully layered organ-ic materials rather than being etched into a rigid crystal of silicon.” [3 ]

DevelopmentThe grinder is inspired by micro-organ-isms, ancient japanese art and design and work by Buckminster Fuller.

ProcessTo achieve a repeatable model, the grinder was 3D printed, then cast in two parts into a silicon rubber mold. Wax was injected to get a wax positive that was sent to the foundry. The piece required small finishing touches and a single screw to hold the top and bottom together.

These tessellated paper lamps are hand folded using one simple fold pattern to create many different styles of shade. The paper is re/up-cycled posters taken from across the RISD campus. The latest iteration is laser cut to allow for faster production times.

Slatted BenchA CNC’d , plywood slatted bench capapble of seating two. It is cut from one sheet of 4’x4’ plywood to maximize strength and efficeincy of matererial. Each pass cuts the profile of the top and bottom of the slats.

Music + MIDI + Processing

This is a live music visualizer that takes any stereo input and outputs form and color based on the loudness of the music. It can be further con-trolled by a MIDI controller making it a great tool for playing along side a DJ like you see in this video.

Real World RhinoThis project was an exercise is alternatiev methods for making 3D digital struc-tures a reality. I worked as a team to develop a script that would generate a ran-dom mountain shape and convert it to printable patterns.

Allnighter.comis a student run online publication for the RISD community. For the 2012-13 school year, Phil Cao and I worked together to de-sign and develop an entirely new interface. The design and implementation focuses on simplification. Each week a new “edition” is released, and the old format did not high-light the uniqueness.

The site is built on Wordpress, with many custom pages and post types.

Lovegov.comLovegov.com is a startup focused on social political action. The site includes news feeds, groups, user profiles and much much more. I worked on designing almost every aspect of the website from IA and wireframing to hi-res mockups. I worked closely in a team of 8 to fine-tune features and brainstorm new fea-tures as the site developed.
