COWDEN BRIDGE

SHELBY COUNTY, IL

1

Around the turn of the last century,

the U.S. constructed a transit system of

railways with high concentrations in the

Midwest and on the east coast. On these

lines, steel bridges were constructed,

many of which are now abandoned. These

unused frames inspire design possibilities

as sustainable buildings. For example,

the proximity to running water could

allow the occupants abundant electricity

from water turbines. Kaskaskia House

will serve as an artist’s retreat built

of salvaged materials with a focus on

creating closed loop systems for energy

and water, thus connecting the occupants

to their surrounding environment in a

direct, tactile way.

Students derived a concept from a particular area of interest on which to base a large

scale project.

CONCEPT

The dynamic form of an insect’s naturally segmented exoskeleton can inspire interesting design

solutions in terms of both structure & aesthetics.

*

Cicadas live out most of their lives

underground until the time comes to emerge

from the soil and shed their nymph shells.

The adult male cicada is well known for

it’s summer song. The Cicada Cabinet will

capture the insect’s transition from an

earth dwelling burrower to the spectacular

winged adult. The unique cellular wing

pattern of the adult cicada as well as an

earthy matte finish will be utilized to

communicate this concept.

Bioluminescence is a well known wonder

of the natural world. Most of the earth’s

bioluminescent flora and fauna reside in

the deep oceans, however one well known

exception is the much loved firefly. The

Firefly Pendant light will capture the

moment of a glowing form in flight. The

goal is to evoke warm images or memories of

summer evenings and the childlike wonder

inspired by expanses of greenery twinkling

with life. *

1 CONCEPT

The city of Stockholm is composed of fourteen islands. The city’s waterways have played a

key role in its’ history. While the inhabitants

are very forward thinking in regards to design

and sustainability, they take the time to pay

homage to the past by retreating to iconic summer

cottages outside of the city where they celebrate

summer solstice during the short months of sun

and warmth. Summarhus will reflect the spirit of

these quaint retreats through earthy palettes

and textures and curvilinear millwork which

will represent the city’s relationship with the

waterways. The “story” of Sweden’s summers will be

told through the lens of Functionalism; Sweden’s

dominant modern design style.

Students were required to design a luxury hotel lobby restaurant located in an assigned city which

can accommodate up to 200 guests.

1 CONCEPT

The city of Stockholm is composed of four-teen islands. The city’s waterways have

played a key role in Stockholm’s history.

These waterways divide not only the city,

but it’s architectural history. Remnants

of the Middle Ages can be found on one

island, while another may hold spectacu-

lar examples of the Renaissance, Baroque

or Modern styles. The hotel will reflect

the idea of waterways flowing and inter-

secting, creating “islands” of the city’s

distant past which will be represented by

birch tree patterns and accents. These

organic elements will be framed by the

rectilinear waterways. The use of blonde

beech wood throughout will create the

quintessential Swedish Functional style

atmosphere.

Students were required to design a luxury hotel located in an assigned city, including

a main lobby & guest room package.

In the film, “Memento”, Leonard is a man who has lost his short-term memory due to brain damage that he

suffered during an attack on himself and his wife.

It’s revealed that he is reliving his investigation

of her death over and over. Many people can identify

with the compulsion to relive destructive cycles,

particulary drug/alcohol addicts. Alaska has one

of the highest alcoholism rates in the U.S. This

may be partially due to prolonged isolation during

long, dark winters. Anokpok will be a free, public

sculpture park, located in Barrow, Alaska which

provides an alcohol-free, therapeutic environment

where the community can gather. The park’s structures

will blend in with the winter landscape but will also

provide an oasis of color and movement, alive with

blue and green lighting to reflect the fantastic

aroura borealis that fills the skies of Northern

Alaska.

1 CONCEPT & PROJECT DESCRIPTION

a specific community function.

Santiago Calatrava is well known for the organic moveable elements of his build-

ings. Some of these elements have been

inspired by the skelatol structures of

various animals. The gallery will embrace

the same movement and style through form

and function. This will be achieved, in

part, by a brise soleil roof structure

with transluscent panels that rotate with

the wind creating fluttering shadow pat-

terns within. These will be inspired by

the graceful movement of a snake and the

organic pattern of its’ scales. Moveable

wall systems will also reinforce the con-

cept while allowing maximum versatility

for changing exhibits.

1 CONCEPT

Students were required to design a gallery, located in Chicago, IL which would showcase

the works of an architect of the student’s

choosing.
