Landscape architecture work

My background has been grooming me for a profession in landscape architecture since I was a youth. I started still life drawing at an early age and later pursued art as a major in college. Growing up on a suburban-rural fringe I grew to respect nature and came to see how urban sprawl can affect it. I believe consciousness of ecology and the environment are needed in the development process and as such I enrolled in multiple ecology courses and am pursuing a LEED AP certification.

I also have an education in business administration as a bachelor’s degree. This not only gave me the knowledge of how business and the world works but it also taught me the importance of leadership and working as a team.

I have expanded my technical knowledge in other ways by completing a certification in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in conjunction with my Masters of Landscape Architecture degree.

My design interests lie in a range of types from sustainable development and environmentally sensitive design to the extravagance of resort design as well as mixed-use, campus and large scale residential planning of which some can be seen in this portfolio. I am open to all other pursuits and am attempting to expose myself to a broad range of design. My recent international work in China has given me the opportunity to experience unique perspectives and differing views of landscape design, as well as collaborating with professionals from across the globe, which has not only enriched my design but also my life experience.

I hope you enjoy the work I compiled here and look forward to speaking with you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Matthew A. McGinley

Having a unique history in architecture as a part of the Mid-Century Modern movement design by Alden Dow, Lake Jackson needed to embrace the past while creating a town for the future. This plan includes those architecural elements in the streetscape as well as incorporating “complete streets” design concepts, creating a destination as well as a hometown rich in history.

Designed Space

Creating a destination place to showcase the history of Lake Jackson as well as develop the downtown economy was paramount in the planning process. The concept of “complete streets” designing space for pedestrian and vehicle movement was crutical to remedy the existing condition. This not only brought the pedestrian back to the streetscape but created spaces for gathering, dining and relaxation.

The creation, as well as preservation, of strolling canopy coveredstreets was important to retain the small town feel of the downtownand create a transition zone between commercial and residential development.

Campus DesignTexas A&M University Galveston, TX

As one of six maritime training academies in the United States, Texas A&M University at Galveston functions as the coastal campus of the Texas A&M University. TAMUG has established a clear goal of becoming the leading marine and maritimeacademic institution in the Gulf of Mexico. As such, the campus enrollment is projected to double in size thus creating the need for a campus master plan and design/redesign of space.

Building Analysis

Development of tree canopy is paramount to re-establish native vegetation on this site due to past logging disturbance. Planting palette included native and nursing plants. Design incorporated transition zone from landscaped plantingsnear buildings to naturalized vegetation toward site perimeter.

Buildings were designed to utilize climatic features by incorporating pier and beam construction so the natural hydrology of the site was not compromised, air flows could be maximized by designing minimal interior walls. Siting and footprint was determined to maximize efficient use of space while keeping disturbance at a minimum.

Natural springs are utilized for water source as gravitational forces cycle the water throughout the facility. Supplimentary water supply is collected through rainwater harvesting from all building roofs. The waste water is treated through biotic and abiotic means using filter beds and pools.
