Argiro Student Center (built) Fairfield IOWAThis project serves as a demonstration of sustainable landscaping techniques such as permeable paving, storm-
water infiltration, regionally-sourced materials and native, drought-tolerant plantings. It is also one of the only pub-lic spaces designed for social gathering on the campus of Maharishi University of Management. A series of formal outdoor spaces can be used for a variety of large and small gatherings whether it is a graduation ceremony or just two friends talking.

D e s c r i p t i o n :
• Permeable Paving - The crushed stone used in the plazas is stabilized with a binding additive so water is able to percolate through the ground.
• Stormwater Management - Water that percolates through the surface is stored in a rock bed and allowed to soak into the ground before it is collected and moved to the wet prairie south of Crow Creek.
• Native and Drought-Tolerant Plants - The planting plan uses mostly drought-tolerant native shrubs, owers and grasses that are found in Iowa prairies and woodlands as well as non-native plants that are suited to our climate.

The landscaping around the ASC serves as a demonstration project for sustainable landscaping techniques as well as a place for social gathering. A series of formal outdoor spaces can be used for a variety of large and small gatherings whether it is graduation or just two friends talking. The student center gardens are made up of three parts: the concrete Entrance plaza and the softer crushed stone plazas on either side of it. Allees of Redbud trees, clearly de ned planting beds and yew hedges lend formality and a sense of permanence to the space while large drifts of shrubs, grasses and perennials interweave to create movement and interest throughout the four seasons.

union of opposites: conceptual framework for site design
My graduate thesis project was a public park sandwiched between the city of Providence (urban edge) and the Seekonk River (riparian system). In the original park there is very little overlap or active engagement with either edge (urban or riparian). My goal was to design the park as a threshold that would reveal the interdependant relationship of both systems.

model of proposed design intervention
I discovered a symbolic language of materials that told the story of the complex relationship of these two opposing systems. Inspired by the site, I narrowed down the materials to stone and water to represent the urban built environment and the river, respectively. The decision to use a symbolic language of materials came about by studying the work of Carl Jung’s theory of universal archetypes.

The Tides Hotel (PB&C) South Beach MIAMII worked with a project manager at Pamela Burton & Company on this garden terrace and pool design for the
Tides Hotel. I created drawings for each project stage: from concept development through creation of the con-struction documents. Working with an interior design firm, our goal was to create a feeling of intimacy and lushness within a very tight space.

Curson Condominiums (PB&C) Los Angeles CAI designed this long, narrow passage while working at Pamela Burton & Co. This passage was the only public
space for this condominium project. Two of the condos had private garden space that was included as part of our design. I devised a pathway made up of three different sized concrete peices that, when put together, created an uninterrupted walkway with modulating edges that provided visual interest and spatial rhythm.

The challenge of this project was addressing the contradictory uses of the space from a contemplative outdoor reading area to the communal activities of the playground and basketball court. The act of cutting creates a series of thresholds that mark the passage through the site as well as create opportunities for an accumulation of people, materials, water and trees.

The undulating ground of the playground creates a dynamic space for the children to play in. The playground is one in a series of spaces. The sequence of spaces presents a range of sensual experiences to the person passing through the site.

By using best stormwater management practices such as porous paving, vegetated swales, and wetland planters all local runoff can be successfully cleaned before entering the nearby river. In doing this the goal was to celebrate stormwater and make it an integral part of the design.
