Architectural artefacts are delightful. They are the record of human’s evolving interactions with their environment. These interaction are indeed the cradle of design; from which interventions take shape to facilitate functions and traditions of an increasingly global and technologically complex world.

This portfolio emcompasses professional and academic projects in 4 diff erent countries that seek to explore the various economic, social and political forces that inform design. The intent is to experiment with the evolving modalities through which design shapes our experience of life. Driven by the pursuit of progress, these projects are guided fundamentally by values of environmental stewardship, material economy, qualityc r aftsamanship, professionalism and integrity as well as the fi rm belief in design as a collaborative process.

Built on the site of an old monastery, this luxury villa will be the home for a wealthy client with ties to the German bank-ing sector. The design builds on the theme of movement, exemplifi ed by vertical louvres on the upper fl oor hovering above the site. Curved walls and a grand staircase orches-trate a fl uid movement into the house.

Built to meet Germany’s demanding energy effi ciency stan-dards (EnEV09), the buidling utilizes solar-thermal energy, various passivhaus features as well as rainwater collection. As the lead architect on this project, my responsibilities cov-ered all aspect from the initial design through to monitoring construction progress.

[2006]The new ADAC headquarter will be the iconic symbol of the of Germany’s largest automotive association. The design is a response to the urban condition between a highspeed railroad track and diverse streetscape. The building is comprised of a sixteen storey offi ce tower, a courtyard featuring a complex glazed foyer and a base-structure around the perimeter for offi ce space. In addition, the complex features a casino, an event center, restaurants as well as spaces designated for the “ADAC experience”.

During my 12 month term as an intern architect, I was involved during the complete design development and early construction document phase.

Located in Milan’s new Excelsior department store (de-signed by J.Nouvel), this design interpretes the Tiff any&Co. brand with a contemporary vocabulary. Based on Tiff any’s famous blue ribbon packaging, the design intends to wrap the client experience into the Tiff any world of exclusiv-ity, luxury and elegance. The ribbons were designed as delicate, pearlescent steel bands which are backlit by con-cealed blue LED lights, creating a glowing, quite ephemeral envelope into which showcases are integrated.

My duties concerned the design development and prepa-ration of construction documents for this highly unusual Tiff any store.

Located in New York’s fashionable SoHo neighborhood, this new fl agship store combines 2 landmark cast-iron structures by virtue of a built-out courtyard. Featuring 5 salons and various private sales areas, this store required extensive adaptations of the building shell in order to meet a complex set of aesthetic, commercial and security requirements.

As a project architect, I was involved from the fi rst concept drawings, through to desgin development, construction drawings and fi nally construction administration. The work scope required close coordination with landmarks, consultants and specialty contractors.

First American Realty of Medellin is currently developing a hillside property in the outskirts of this Colombian metrop-olis, for which a team including Jeremy Zick, Josh Hatha-way and myself was asked to develop a concept house.

The concept house is a 150m2 to 300m2 upscale, 0-energy residence designed for retirees from Colombia and abroad. Utilizing the year-around spring-like climate, the concept seeks to maximize the integration of out- and indoor spac-es. In addition, we are planning for solar and solar thermal collectors, extensive solar shading, as well as the use of lo-cal building materials to achieve a fully sustainable living environment.

Blending the aesthetic language of traditional western “cowboy” culture, with a contemporary formal language, Graft developed a steakhouse concept highlighted by cowhide-clad, pannelled cealing and prairie-grass-inspired lighting features. Recessed lighting illuminate the ceiling while signage and prairie grass are backlit through acid-etched and printed glass panels.

As part of a small design team, my involvement started with the concept and brand development, continued with material selections and ff &e, commencingin the construc-tion document phase.

In December 2007, the actor Brad Pitt along with Graft and several other partners lauched the “Make It Right Project”, as an initiative to build hundreds of homes in the Lower 9th Ward neighborhood of New Orleans and help the people of New Orleans reclaim their town As part of this larger project, the “Pink Project” art installation was conceived to serve the dual function of focusing national and global media attention on the plight of the residents as well as becoming the main driver of a large fundraising scheme.

The pink structures are designed to evoke the image of the rebuilding eff ort of not just individual homes, but the soul of an entire region. To lend credibility to the ambition of creating a sustainable neighborhood, the “Pink Project” utilized 100% recycable or reus-able components. As assistant to the Co-Curator and in collaboration with all involved parties, I was involved in the entire production of the art installation.

Inspired by a brief to design a house for Johann S. Bach, the speculative inquiry called Garden of Virtue proposes to restore the island and culture of Nauru which was ravaged from a century of phosphate mining.

We seek to move beyond reclamation and intend to cre-ate a hybrid physical-cultural fabric on the island by em-bedding traditions into the landscape, thus manifesting environmental stewardship and virtue. In a series of inter-ventions, man-made artifacts will drive the generation of symbiotic ecologies. In one such instance, a tree folly will morph from a seed incubator into a substrate for various ecological niches before turning into an environmental vestige, thus becoming a recording device of the transfor-mation.

Wilhelm-Leuschner Platz is the southern gate and trans-portation node of Leipzig’s inner city district. The concept seeks to reinforce this urban node by drawing on functions from the surrounding areas to create a diverse mixture of functions and use patterns.

In addition to reestablishing the edges of the historic plaza, the proposal creates a second, two-tier public space gener-ated from a large fl ying roof. Underneath the roof, the his-toric food market and an event center with seating for ca. 1000 spectators will fi nd a home while the top of the roof maybe utilized as a green space complementing the green belt around Leipzig’s inner city.

As part of an overhaul of Freiburg’s inner city into a pedes-trian zone, the university’s library (built in the 1970’s) is also set to be upgraded to meet today’s energy standards as well as the new urban conditions. The complex volume of the existing structure, with its setbacks and outgrowths, is simplifi ed into a more energy-effi cient box.

The signature piece of the design is a large sweeping stair-case, itself a public space with ample seating opportunities, which connects public spaces on the ground and upper levels that are seperated by the more tightly-secured book magazines and reading areas. The result is a space that re-defi nes the public character of this university and its library.
