You can’t see them. Neither can you feel them. But both bottled water and tap water may contain contami-nants - like aluminum, chlorine, and lead - that can affect your health.

By law, piped water from your fau-cet and bottled water should have “acceptable” or low levels of con-taminants and should be free from harmful organisms that cause ty-phoid fever, gastroenteritis, cholera, and other water-borne diseases.

Despite these rigid measures, wa-ter can be contaminated as a result of human activity or nature. And even if contaminants are under the government’s legal limit, they can still pose a threat to vulnerable groups like pregnant women and people with cancer or AIDS.

Drinking contaminated water can lead to a host of problems aside from the fact that it can ruin your skin! As you know, water is essential for healthy and beautiful skin. It helps eliminates toxins from the body and makes the skin soft, smooth, and wrinkle-free.

Dirty or contaminated water, how-ever, can affect your health and cause diseases that also affect your skin, making you look old and ugly. To show you what I mean, here’s a roundup of possible contaminants in drinking water that can cause prob-lems:

Aluminum - is found almost every-where - in cooking pots and utensils, antacids, baking powder, food ad-ditives, underarm deodorants, and water. High brain levels of aluminum, however, are found in people suffer-ing from Alzheimer’s disease. It has also been associated with dementia. In animals, this element causes epi-lepsy and other nerve disorders.Platinum QualCntin

Chlorine - is used to disinfect wa-ter but it also reacts with organic matter in water to form chloroform

cancer effects. MCLs are set on known or an-ticipated adverse human health effects which are based on lifetime exposure. The exceptions

are the standards for coliform bacteria and nitrates as these can pose immediate threats to health.

To comply with MCLs, public wa-ter systems have a

choice of any state-approved treatment. But in some cases, the EPA may require use of a particular treatment technique instead, for ex-ample, when the contaminant cannot be mea-sured easily.

The EPA is responsible for regulating drink-ing water contaminants, however it does not test for all of them. The Agency does not moni-tor and report on the more than 7,500 chemi-cals and microbes in the water supply. General water resource information can be found at its headquarters, in its 10 regional offices and on the Internet.

State agencies can also supply information onthe water supply and its quality. Local pub-lic health departments, the water supplier and also some environmental organizations can also be helpful in supplying answers and sta-

tistics..Since the original Safe Drinking Water Act

was passed by Congress in 1974, the EPA has set uniform nationwide minimum standards for safe drinking water. However, it is the State public health and environmental agencies that have the primary responsibility to make sure every community meets healthful drinking wa-ter standards.

Drinking Water: Clean or Contaminated Learning About What Comes Out of Your Water Faucets

Although most drinking water suppli-ers meet the standards set by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). There is a growing number of threats than can contaminate the water that comes into homes due to the by-products of modern life styles. While contamination occurs in-frequently, when it does, the effects can be a catastrophe for those who become ill.

During 1993 and 1994, there were 30 reported outbreaks of disease associated with drinking water, 23 associated with public water supplies. An outbreak of cryptosporidi-osis in Milwau-kee during that time resulted in 400,000 victims being treated, with 4000 being hospitalized and over 50 deaths.

Some outbreaks can be traced to con-tamination by bacteria or viruses, most likely linked to animal or human waste. There are certain pathogens, such as Cryptosporidium, that can pass through filtration and disinfec-tion to cause gastrointestinal diseases. The consequences for people with compromised immune systems can be serious.Drinking Water Standards

The EPA issues drinking water standards or Maximum Contamination Levels (MCLs) for over 80 contaminates. The standards limit the amount of each substance allowed.

A risk assessment process is used to set drinking water quality standards. Risks are estimated separately for cancer and non-

Contaminants in drinking water from pharmaceuticals, microbes and toxins and cosmetics, perfumes,

Providing pumps, monitoring progressUNICEF has provided Nga Yoke Kaung village

with water pumps to help drain the ponds, and is monitoring their progress. The first pond is al-ready clean and, thanks to the constant rain, is now filled with safe water.

But the community is facing a dilemma; the ponds need to be drained quickly, because they must be refilled before the mon-soon season con-cludes at the end of October. However, during the monsoon season, the rain is so strong that it is very difficult to empty the ponds. If the vil-lagers do not manage to clean the second pond very soon, there will not be enough rain to fill it again this year.

“We are not quitting until this thing is empty,” said one of the workers in Nga Yoke Kaung, standing waist-deep in water and tossing mud onto the shore. He was joined by 50 more villag-ers, all of whom understood the severity of the situation. Without the ponds, the community will not have water to get through the coming six months of dry season.

The village head is confident that with UNI-CEF’s help, his community will be able to empty and clean the second pond quickly.

Alternative solutionsUNICEF is also working on alternative so-

lutions to help cyclone-affected communities in high-risk areas of Myanmar. The organiza-tion plans to relocate eight water-treatment plants to strategic locations, so that ponds can be refilled with treated water from the riv-ers. In addition, UNICEF is advocating water rationing and is distributing tanks to villages

to increase their storage capacity. “Even though ... significant efforts are un-

der way to pump contaminated water out of the ponds, I am worried we won’t be able to clean all the water ponds before the dry season starts,” said Mr. Pickardt. “Therefore,

it is very important to identify high-risk areas with potential drinking water short-ages during the up-

coming dry season.”UNICEF, with the support of other aid

agencies and the Government of Myanmar, has cleaned a total of 1,800 ponds so far.

“By working closely with the communities, local authorities and our partner agencies, I am confident that we can make a difference and be well prepared to avoid severe water shortages,” said Mr. Pickardt.
