01 PHYSICAL BOOK: AN IRREPLACEABLE EXPERIENCE AS A SYNTHESIS OF CONTENT, AESTHETIC AND FORM-REPORT WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY ELENA MANFREDI

This report investigate the irreplaceability of the printed book through the analysis of two categories that need to be printed, to exist and where form is important to the convention of the content for a quality reading experience: the artist’s book and the designers’ book. The overall design of the structure of this book is made to make the reader more aware of the importance and beauty of physical book and engage with it. Making this book I tried to create a fluid marriage between content and form.

02 THE DAILY SMILE RESEARCH BOOK

This book gathers my process of research and design in response to the Strategies and Visual Research project which has been carried through as it was a real life brief. We were working as service designers, using our pragmatic thinking process and creative abilities to solve a problem in a visual and innovative way. We have been pushed to go away from our computers, go in the streets and meet the problem that we were tackling in real life.

03 THE DAILY SMILE

This publication is an alternative to the usual bad news that is offered to us daily. Reality is important, but what is given to people seems a partial vision of it. Life is beautiful and apart of the bad events, a lot of amazing news is happening right now. This publication aims to bring a glimmer of happiness in the everyday life of the London underground travellers. It will encourage you to believe in yourself through a positive attitude, jokes, news about humankind’s positive achievements, anniversaries of the birth of some human beings that changed the world by making it a better place, real stories of success of normal people like me and you and much more.

05 ISTD: FLATLAND

The book “Flatland” is a journey of a square seeking out the discovery of the “truth” about different dimensions. The aim of this new edition is to allow the reader to experience a journey similar to the main character. The typography and the book’s structure are both designed to underline this purpose. The final design is the culmination of a various different experiments. All these experiments lead me to approach the typography in a more classical but definitely mature way. The format originally began as a composition by nested boxes. Each box represented a dimension and the text of the book was printed on the containers and/or placed inside. The final edition is a translation of this concept to paper, with the transformation becoming more practical in some cases, but more accessible in all.

06 REALITY IS AN ILLUSION

Self initiated projects aimed to use typography in a experimental way. Each 3D solid is built with some readable text extracted by three different texts that deal with the vision of the reality perceived by the human beings .This topic is considered from different point of views: Philosophy, Religion and Science. The solid of the talk about Philosophy contains “ The Myth of the Cave” from “The Republic” written by Plato in 360 B.C.E, the one about Religion, some text from “Vivekachudamani” written by Shankaracharyaand and the one about Science one of the chapter extracted from

“Relativity Theory’, Albert Einstein 1922.

07 ‘A WAKING LIFE” MERCHANDISING

This self-initiated project is a tribute to “A Waking Life”, movie directed by Richard Linklater. Using my own photography and graphic elements, I tried to produce a memorable and intense set of eight postcards, containing on the front imagery and on the back some sentences extracted from the script of the movie. This postcards, with the DVD of the movie and the poster, are contained inside an handmade folder.
