the fa s t paced and s low paced a reas . The roo f canopy un i f i e s the s t ruc tu re , a s we l l

a s adds a l aye r to smooth the th resho ld o f the bu i ld ing . Work ing toge ther , the

canopy and the bu i ld ings c rea te the i con ic expres s ion requ i red by th i s con tex t .

I n o rder to embed myse l f in to the p ro jec t , I f e l t tha t emp loy ing my body a s a measur ing dev i ce wou ld

p rov ide a d i rec t phys i ca l re l a t ionsh ip be tween the myse l f and the p lace . By us ing my body to ana l yze the

s i t e , I c rea ted a f ramework wh ich uncovered the s i t e , p iece by p iece , in d i rec t phys i ca l p ropor t ion to my

body .

(even non human) sens i t i v i t y to tha t p lace . In o rder to d i s cove r an inheren t qua l i t y

o f a p lace one mus t c r i t i ca l l y eva lua te no t on l y tha t p lace bu t a l so the i r in te rp re ta t ions

o f tha t p lace . The cond i t ion in Rose i s l e ,MB p rov ides a su i t ab le con tex t to p rac t i ce

th i s method . The ca lm , sec luded se t t ing i s idea l fo r se l f awarenes s and med i ta t i ve

eva lua t ion o f ones su r round ings . Fo r me , th i s se t t ing p rovoked inqu i r y in to how we

have evo l ved , a s a race , to see our wor ld a round us . The dev i ces we use to cap tu re

moment s , to remember , enhance o r commun ica te w i th our immed ia te env i ronment s

have a l t e red the p roces ses we undergo to eva lua te our cond i t ion . In the f i r s t pa r t o f

th i s p ro jec t , I e xper imented w i th some t rad i t iona l methods o f document ing p lace

w i th the an t i c ipa t ion tha t , by us ing these methods in a new way wou ld be in i t i a t ing

a new d ia logue w i th the p lace . I thought tha t a d ia logue in i t i a ted in th i s manner

cou ld pe rpe tua te to a new under s tand ing o f p lace . To fu r the r the conver sa t ion I

made a dev i ce to in te r rup t my percep tua l in te r faces and ex t rac t in fo rmat ion f rom

Humans have evo l ved to take the i r pe rcep t ions fo r g ran ted . The h i s to r i ca l d i s cour se

o f human reason has depended on a se r i e s o f pe rcep tua l a s sumpt ions wh ich have

become a l ea rned “ second na tu re ” to us .

In read ing na tu re and re spond ing sens i t i ve l y we perpe tua te the who lenes s o f our

env i ronment . Th i s d i s cour se d i f f e r s f rom the h i s to r i ca l t r a j ec to ry o f human reason

and log ic , wh ich has seeming ly l ed us to a so r t o f d i s connec t be tween peop le and

the i r env i ronment . In s tead o f abandon ing th i s t rend o f thought , we can opera te

w i th in th i s se r i e s o f d i s connec t ions to revea l someth ing wh ich can b r ing us c lo se r to

our env i ronment s . In th i s p ro jec t , my der i va t ions f rom the d i s sec t ion and

inves t iga t ion in to the s i t e were a lone no t enough to p rov ide a deeper in s igh t in to

the p lace . In sp i ra t ion came f rom inhab i t ing the zone c rea ted by the d i s sec t ion and

ana l y s i s o f the s i t e .

re s iden t i a l a rch ; a s we l l a s o the r odd ly p ropor t ioned bu i ld ings such as the cub ic

houses by P ie t B lom (1984) ; and a 200 yea r o ld he r i t age church wh ich , a s pu t fo r th

by c i t y by law , de te rm ined the he igh t re s t r i c t ion fo r the su r round ing bu i ld ings . The

c l i en t fo r the o f f i ce bu i ld ing wanted to make a s ta tement w i th in th i s s t range contex t

o f luxury , innova t ion as we l l a s sens i t i v i t y . Th rough mode l s , we deve loped a mass

wh ich acknowledged the dynamic human t ra f f i c , and p roposed the use o f a

s t ruc tu ra l f acade sy s tem to enhance the t ransparency o f the bu i ld ing . The goa l was
