DIPLOMA PROJECTKRONIOS^S PLACE THESSALONIKI JULY 2009

PROBLEMS TO SOLVEare the strict limits, the vicinity with adjacent private areas and the high blind faces of the proximate buildings.

AREA OF INTERVENTION: Serres, Greeceincludes the cinema “Kronio” (1) Current Situation: DowngradingFirst Goal: To upgrade and to restore the relation of the whole town with this site.

In order to enforce the free public character of the area we propose the extension of our site to 4 unbuilt plots on the interior of the build-ing’s square (2) and to a part of the neighboring school’s court (3).

There, we propose a placement of volumes with certain limits, with the form of a “wedge”.

This is the reason why our DESIGN LINEShave the intention of directing or trapping the users’ view, and guide them in the internal square, an unknown space until now.

GENERAL PLAN1. Building of cinema club, cinema labs, cinema and theatre library 2. Cafe-building3. Building of arts, drawing and pottery labs / second access on the pubblic space from the shool’s court

MAIN CONCEPT is the design of a cultural core in the centre of the town, with the occasion of the vicinity of the cinema Kronio and the theatre Asteria (4),

Apart from the cinema usage that re-existed, we suggest the establishment of new functions related to culture, such as a cinema club, pottery, drawing and cinema labs, a cinema and theatre library, a café and a multi-using exhibitional space, which takes in a permanent exhibition related to cinema.

All these functions are connected through the planning of the square as the original pub-lic space. Actually, the square is designed as a unified surface which is folded, sunk and raised, creating position for functions

As it concerns the problem of the vicinity of our site with the high blind faces, it is solved in 3 dif-ferent levels.

- Direction of users’ view- Placement of low- level building in contact with them- Use of light constructions which are concerned in continuity with the square’s surface which activate them, creating new faces.

Because of the need of more free public space and the maintenance of low levels of building, we decide to design underground buildings that have the need of large area such as the multi-usage exhibitional space.

The access is through a starcase, which includes a permanent exhibition of cinema /collectible projectors and cinema-machines.

This project is based on the design and re-use of an existing building (Istittuto Ittiogenico) and redevelop of the surrounding area through the use of innovative technologies and methods of sustainable planning.

The area of intervention is at the center of Rome, in zone Tiburtina, an area with high mobility due to the existance of one of the most central railway stations of the city and several Renaissance monu-mental sets.

GENERAL FEATURES- Sound and air pollution due to roads and increased mobility.- Sub-study projects such as the new railway station that is about to consist also commercial uses, and the “Solar City” a model settlement. - Difference in Intervention levels, difficulty of accessibility and fruibility.

CLIMATIC CHARACTERISTICS

- Average humidity in winter from 87 to 89% and summer from 50 to 54%. - Wind: Northeast in winter (1), and northwesterly in summer (2). Noticeable wind speed at a height greater than 9m.

- Insolation: In winter all aspects of the existing building are shaded, except for the East that receives sunlight in the morning (1). In sum-mer, the Southern and Eastern sides receive sun in the morn-ing, while the West in the afternoon and evening. (2).

The creation of a cultural core combined with a functional and recreational green space, which along with the under-study projects will change the character of the area giving new fea-tures.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES - BUILDING PROGRAM

CONCEPT

The existing building (Ittiogenico) is mantained being a historical building of 1895, and after the appropriate procedures is used to accommodate the museum and archive of a famous Italian actor Dario Fo. In the existing building are added new building volumes that will be used as a cafeteria and library. (1)

- New building blocks are added to accommodate a social theater (3) (theater aims to reintegrate vulnerable social groups) and respective to this, laboratories and classrooms (4). - The transition from existing to the new building block, is made through a closed - protected garden that contributes on bioclimatic features of the building (2). - The problem of difference in level is solved by creating “green” terraces in order to normalize the elevation of the street with the neighborhood response.

ASPECTS OF NEW BUILDING BLOCKS

SUSTAINABLE INTERVENTIONS AND TECHNOLOGIES- Designing of new building blocks with the large side to south, so as to achieve the maximum of solar uptaking radiation. - Use of vegetation and water component in order to improv the microclimate. Are used: deciduous trees in the south, aimed at cool-ing and shading in summertime, evergreen in the north, as a barrier protection from winter winds and many shrubs and plants scattered in the surrounding area.

_TO EXISTING BUILDING:

- Replace all windows and frames with new, of good insulation properties. - Creation of a passable gree roof, which serves as a sound and temperature insula-tion. - Collection, through the green roof, of the rain water and reuse for watering the gar-den. - Creation of new building block that func-tions as a double entrance, in order to mini-mize heat loss at entry and exit from the museum.

_TO NEW BUILDING:

- Use large glass surfaces in order to col-lect heat and natural lighting. - Use of mobile and fixed louvers with an appropriate inclination on all glass sur-faces. - Use solar panels Category E19/318 _ SUNPOWER on the roof of the theater and Category THINFILM TS-SEE TROUGH _TEM-POSOLAR on the front aspects for energy production .

ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT RESIDENCE IN ANO-POLITHESSALONIKI FEBRUARY 2008

The Ano-Poli is located on the northern and highest part of Thessaloniki, It’ s a traditional settlement that survived from the great fire of 1917. For this reason, the Principles want to preserve this area by the block-of-flats building type and maintaining its special character. The newer buildings are built in accordance with the legislation, in order to coexist har-moniously with the olders. Predominant type of house is the house for one or two families, keeping the style of the neighborhood. Some of the features of the buildings are the pitched roofs with red tiles, the architectural projections, the proportion of windows, the use of “dark lines” in aspects and the use of colors such as burgundy, gray, brown, orange, and light blue.

PROJECT_PROPOSAL

This project is the proposal for the con-struction of a family-house building, with an appropriate profes-sional area on ground floor.

The site has south-west orientation, a bevel of 18% and bor-ders from the other 3 sides with adjacent land.

ECOnciousness_ STUDYING THE SUSTAINABLE CITIES THESSALONIKI SEPTEMBER 2009

RESEARCH WORK

The global climate is changing...The urban landscape day by day turns into a claustrophobic living space that burden the ecosystem.Human activity is characterized by the irrational management of natural resources and all kinds of over-consumption. What can we do to prevent the vengeance of nature?Sustainable development is required to normalize the price that everyone must pay for the current and future implications.

This research paper examines the implementation of sustainable development in the immediate human environment, the urban space. Systems and practices that when applied, can ensure a better quality of life, enhancement of the natural environment and rational use of energy and natural resources in order to meet present’s needs but not compromising the needs of future generations.

The first part discusses the concept of sustainability and sustainable development, which factors led to its need, how was amended through global operations, how was associated with the city as a concept, on which systems depends on and how from theoretical provisions passed into the stage of implementation. We try to find out what elements are those that their implementation through the designing program can make a city “sustainable”.

The second and main part, studies the implementation of sustainable development in different kind of ini-tiatives and interventions. For better understanding are used realized examples. Cities that have grew or re-created based on the principles of sustainability, which inputs and outputs in energy savings tend to be balanced, that use renewable energy sources and generally have claim better living conditions in all sectors. The examples used are the settlement of Vauban, in the city Freiburgh of Germany, as example of urban reuse, and the island of Samso in Denmark, as an example of energy-autonomous island.

Then follows a review of Greek activity, how it was influenced by European examples and how it is corre-sponding to citizens. In this section is studied the island ‘Ai-Stratis”, which is in the south of Lemnos, which over the next few years will become the fourth “green island” in the world and which it considered to be a Samso of Greece.

Finally, the last part through analysis and comparison of examples, cite prospects and opportunities for future sustainable cities and appose some first steps that will enable more and more cities to lead to sustainability

ARTISTIC WORK WORKSHOP_ MORPHOGENETIC STRATEGIES THESSALONIKI MARCH 2008

Purpose of the Workshop was to force the participants to produce models and organizational forms that arise as a function of the application of rules and construction techniques in natural materials. The site, the scale and the building program is not taken into account. However, emphasis is given on abstract but consistent achievement of predetermined parametric design framework, in order to prevent accidental and unintentional forms. Two-dimensional organizational patterns sought in mathematics, nature, micro and macro level, progressing through techniques and materials in three and four-dimensional complexes capable of generating a variety of spatial and formal products.

The workshop re-set the manual synthetic production back on track, a practice that systematically re-moved by the architectural synthesis’ methodology in recent years.

Result of the workshop was the generation of modeling and a multitude of morphoplastic machines that are not buildings but mechanisms of thought and predictors of architectural compositions.

The models were exposed in the showroom of the School of Architecture of AUTH for a few days.

CREATION PROCESS_ used material: plastic

CUTTING THE PLASTIC SURFACE TRIES OF DEFORMATION MEASURING AND CREATING GRID DEFORMATION ON GRID FIXATION TO SPECIFIC POINTS

The deformation of our model was reached due to the fact that we fixed the plastic surface on our grid with pins. NEXT STEP was to make this deformation PERMANENT and take out the pins. So we used the method of THERMOFORMINGwhich means we posed our model in a minimum distance from “heat engines” such as hair dryer, fun heater and oven. The result was the PERMANENT DEFORMATION of the plastic surface.

ARTISTIC WORK WORKSHOP_ STREET ART BERLIN FEBRUARY 2011

STEP 1 : TOUR TO STREET-ART NEIGHBORHOODS

- 20 -

In this combination of touring and workshop, we are walking on neighborhoods that made Ber-lin one of the capitals of street art and graffiti knowing projects of more than 50 local and in-ternational artists. Later, we have been taught by local artists, the legendary “street language” and tech-niques such as stencils, paste-ups, throw-ups, burners, bombings, murals. The work-shop ends with the creation of a street-art model by the participants with the stencil technique.

The street artists are not trying to change the definition of an artwork, they are just trying to communicate through their work with everyday people about socially relevant issues so as to be informed by aesthetic values without being imprisoned by them.
