What I try to do is the art of building, and the art of building is the art of construction; it is not only about forms and shapes and images.

Abiquiu Inn Courtyard Competition - Honorable MentionNew Mexico has earned the nickname Land of Enchantment, and upon visiting it is clear why. The Abiquiu Inn is located in the northern mountains surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.Abiquiu, New Mexico

2The goal was to provide a private enclosure while framing views beyond; attempting to capture as much as possible of the history and quality of New Mexico’s culture without tarnishing its purity. Abiquiu, New Mexico

3 Abiquiu, New MexicoAbiquiu Inn Courtyard The courtyard is placed on the cardinal axis to reinforce processions.

The pavillion is surrounded by gardens that allow a gradual transition.

4Exterior garden decks around fi re pits are made from recycled railroad ties to pay respect to the way New Mexico has grown. Abiquiu, New Mexico

5 Abiquiu, New MexicoAbiquiu Inn Courtyard The garden screen allows physical privacy from nearby casitas while

perserving connectivity to the gardens and vistas of the Inn.

6Abiquiu, New MexicoAbiquiu Inn CourtyardThe traditional adobe walls surround the courtyard. The doubled vegas

give a modern structural aspect to the time-honored construction.

7 Abiquiu, New MexicoAbiquiu Inn Courtyard Rammed earth elements are reserved for special moments within the

couryard and provide contrast to the smooth adobe.

2nd Year SpringCharleston, South Carolina is referred to as a food lover’s paradise, where cooking is judged as an art form. Where modern and traditional dishes blend in perfect harmony.

Page 13: Portfolio (4th year)

10Charleston, SCCulinary InstituteThe parti of the design is to make the kitchen a gallery for the art that it creates. The kitchen is

always visible from the interior and exterior spaces allowing it to function as the catalyst.

Page 14: Portfolio (4th year)

11 Charleston, SCCulinary Institute Visibility of the kitchen is critial to engaging the street life and drawing

pedestrian traffi c.

Page 15: Portfolio (4th year)

12Charleston, SCCulinary InstituteThe kitchen lies at the heart of the institute in an interior atrium-like

space that is visible from multiple fl oors.

ACSA CompetitionThe challenge was to create a mid-rise, mixed-use complex with aff ordable housing, a wood manufacturing facility with showrooms, and a bicycle share center.Red Hook, Brooklyn

Timber in the City

Page 17: Portfolio (4th year)

14Red Hook, BrooklynTimber in the CityLocated in Red Hook, Brooklyn, the design focuses on tying together the emerging green

spaces within the neighborhood and larger Brooklyn Greenway.

Page 18: Portfolio (4th year)

15 Red Hook, BrooklynTimber in the City Towering above its context, preserving the low urban fabric at the street

front was a critical consideration.

Page 19: Portfolio (4th year)

16Red Hook, BrooklynTimber in the CityBreaking the super block is used to create a landscape that draws people

from Redhook to the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway

Page 20: Portfolio (4th year)

17 Red Hook, BrooklynTimber in the City The tower is created using a wood Vierendeel truss system that creates a

multi-level structural member.

the residences of the fl oor.

19 Orvieto, ItalyChapel of the Rock

2nd Year FallOrvieto is a cliff -side settlement over 2,000 years old; it has an underground city in the cliff side. This project was to honor the history while celebrating its longevity into modern times.

Page 23: Portfolio (4th year)

20Orvieto, ItalyChapel of the RockThe parti is focused on contrasting the type of caves that would be

made, one crude for shelter and the other pristine as an art.

Page 24: Portfolio (4th year)

21 Orvieto, ItalyChapel of the Rock The polished stone bounding has been pulled back into a perfect square

that surrounds the organic form of the boulder.

Page 25: Portfolio (4th year)

22Orvieto, ItalyChapel of the RockWithin the archaic boulder is a space that is pristinely carved and

vaulted. Helping contemplate about how Orvieto’s founders lived.

23 Kansas City, MOWhole Body Center

Kansas City, Missouri - Work in ProgressAs the urban core redevelopment begins to show results and people move downtown there is a growing need of quality exercise centers in walking distance.

Page 27: Portfolio (4th year)

24Kansas City, MOWhole Body CenterThe concept is to place all of the program in a central core that overlooks the dynamic

elements; while an accessable green roof allows patrons to relax their minds.

Outside of Studio ProjectsDespite so much emphasis being placed on studio in academia, to be a successful architect you have to understand a wide variety of complex issues.
