This Fall I have another great opportunity to study abroad in Orvieto, Italy. I am very grateful to have this opportunity. I’m excited to be able to travel and see the architecture that I have learned about in school. I am also excited because I hope to enhance my sketching skills and my abilities to be versatile and apply that knowledge to my schoolwork and future employment.

My number one hobby is definitely playing tennis. I started playing tennis for fun my freshman year of high school and then decided to start playing year round. By the time I was a sophomore I was on the varsity team and having so much fun at tournaments. My senior year was the most fun season for me because I was co-captain with my best friend and number one varsity.

In high school I traveled to France for two weeks with my French class. The first week I spent with a host family where I went to school with my “host sister.” The second week we spent traveling around France. We went to several different cities including Versailles and Paris. This trip was an amazing experience for me because it was the first time I was exposed to some of the best architecture I had ever seen. Ever since this trip I have been interest-ed to travel more and see more great buildings that continue to inspire me.

I have lived in Independence, Missouri my entire life with my family whom I love and care about very much. I have one brother, an awesome dog and a sassy cat. My parents are the most supportive and loving parents I could ask for. My friends are also very important to me and I love spending time with them. I have always taken school very seriously and have excelled ever since I was young. I have now been on the Dean’s list four times at Kansas State University and plan to finish my Masters Degree in May of 2017.

Project Description:The Crossroads Campground is located in the Crossroads District in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This unique building can be described as a co-making and co-working environment. The building includes a fabrication lab for all members of the community, co-working spaces for start-up companies and shared community space.

Concept:The main concept of my project is the use of alleyways going through the site. The alleyway unites each of the major program elements with shared outdoor space where people can go to interact. In the Summer the alleyway can be opened on either end to allow for ventilation and circulation. In the Winter the alley can be closed with nanawalls to create a greenhouse that can be used to heat the adjoing spaces.

One Artist Museum: Martin Puryear

Project Description:The objective of this third year final project was to design an art museum in the bustling city of Manhattan, New York. The museum would be exclusive to one artist, Martin Puryear, but would also display temporary works from travelling artists. The site condition was new and unique given its urban setting.

Concept:After researching and learning about Martin Puryear’s art and his way of working I decided to create a tower and a courtyard. Martin Puryear’s art consists of mostly sculptures, however he also does some printmaking. Puryear works in many scales, so some of his artwork can be seen inside while other pieces are displayed outside. For this reason I decided to create outdoor galleries that can be used to display some of those pieces. Inside the tower is Puryear’s indoor sculptures while the courtyard houses outdoor pieces that relate to the bustling streets of Manhattan. Site Plan

This design was separated into two separate forms; a vertical element and a horizontal element. The vertical element is the tower form and the horizontal element makes up the courtyard form. The tower is emphasized as its own form with the use of a screen.

The screen that emphasizes the tower form also serves to shade the interior spaces of the museum. The design of the screen fades from closed at the top to open at the bottom. This created varied light on every floor that helps protect and display the artwork throughout the building.

Tall Grass Prairie Retreat

Project Description:The first project of my third year was to design a retreat center. The site was located on a large field in Alma, Kansas where it would be possible for visitors to fully escape the chaotic nature of city life.

Concept:My design for a retreat center was focused around a central outdoor place where people could go to enjoy each other’s company and relax. This central place is where all of the other spaces were located around. For every indoor living space there is an equal outdoor space that is directed towards different views that the site offers. This would encourage people to be outside and go explore the outdoors in ways that are not possible in city life. These outdoor spaces and views are emphasized with paths that guide people to their final destinations.

Photographer’s Natural Light Studio

Project Description:The objective of this project was to learn about the attributes and affects that light has on a space. This project was located in downtown Manhattan, Kansas on a site that allowed the building to receive light on all sides of the building in different ways.

Concept:Using light as a threshold is what drove my design. I wanted to create a different type of lighting condition in each space as it was required. The structure was designed so that the floors did not have to touch the walls; this allowed every floor to receive light from the above floors. I designed double height spaces so that light could be borrowed and used as diffused light in other areas of the building. Another idea that drove this design was the idea of separate systems; circulation for the building was brought to the North side and used as a light well while the galleries were held inside the main portion of the building along with a separate system of residences on the top floor.

The first light study I tried was a white cylinder. I was testing to see how to create diffused light from a direct light source. With this study I learned how a translucent material can help diffuse light, however it did not diffuse it as much as I was expecting.

The next light study I did was an attempt to diffuse light more than I was able to do with my first study. In order to do this I added a white translucent material to the top of the white cylinder. This made the direct light more diffused and less like a spotlight.

The third lighting device I made was a cylinder madeout of a transparent material instead of a solid material. This device gave very interesting effects to the light. There were different areas where the light was brighter and whiter than others. This device was important to study to understand how light reacts through a fully transparent material that is bent into a shape.

The last device I made was a bent rectangle. The bent shape allows for light to be brought in from a specific direction and redirected into the space. The device diffused the lightwhile also lighting up the interior space. The shape ofthe device also provided interesting light and shadewhen there were different angles of light coming intothe space.

The views from the first two floors are blocked on the North and South sides by other buildings. Channel glass is used above the surrounding buildings to allow for views out and to let in diffused light.

This building is designed to be solid on the base and open on the floors above. This is because of the surrounding views and also inspired the “floating floors” and lighting design.

Cico Park Pavilion

Project Description:This project was to create a park pavilion for Cico Park in Manhattan, Kansas. The project required a large open space, a partial floor and an exhibition space. The purpose of these three spaces were to intensively study the structure required to span a large distance as well as support a floor with openings in it for stairs. This project was also the first time I was exposed to learning how to use Revit as a design and building tool.

Lessons Learned:From this project I learned how to accurately size structure in order to span large spaces and also how to support floors and roofs. The other lessons I learned from this project were how to navigate and make elements in Revit. I started by making simple objects like columns and beams and then moved on to making more complex objects, the exhibition space. I also learned how to use revit as a rendering tool by adding lighting, trees, materials and cameras to create different views.

Memorial To Mies

Project Description:This memorial pavilion is located in Berlin, Germany on the site of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie. The pavilion is designed as a tribute to Mies and his career. The purpose of this project was to learn how to use 3DS Max Design and all of the attributes is holds as a rendering and video tool.

Lessons Learned:From this project I learned how to use 3DS Max Design as a rendering tool and also how to make a video in the program. I started in the program by learning how to merge files together from different programs to create one cohesive scene. Later, I learned how to apply materials, set up camera views and daylighting systems in order to create a photo-realistic image. Further into the project, I stripped the materials from most of the scene and rendered several cameras in order to make a video that utilized scale figures that were moving around the site.
