5 Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club 2019-2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements
Club Council and Officer Reports
President
Peter Francis
In my last Annual Report I stated that there were two
major strands of activity running through the Club.
They have again this year.
First, there was the maintenance of our usual
activities: patrolling, training for various awards, the
provision of programmes such as Nippers, Same
Wave, VacSwim, surf sports coaching and
competition and community engagement via the
triathlons and support for festive season events.
These have continued.
Unfortunately, this year, due to the Covid-19
pandemic some of them had to be truncated. The
patrol season was ended early, with the Executive of
our Club Council making that decision ahead of the
formal State Council decision to do the same. I am
appreciative of their unanimous support in doing so.
It was the smart decision.
In surf sports State Championships were impacted
upon. No Annual Dinner was possible for us to
present Awards, Medals or Certificates. While some
clubs have had virtual ceremonies to recognise
member achievement, others, like our Club Council
have talked about having a ceremony to launch the
new season and to acknowledge last season’s
achievements at that event. While the first day of
state-wide patrols is scheduled for Saturday 10th
October and our AGM has been scheduled for
Sunday 30th August, on these and other matters, we
are held to ransom by the pandemic and may need to
change our plans as time unfolds.
The second major strand of activity has again been
the push towards the demolition and re-building of the
Clubrooms. This has been an onerous and long term
task, with more than a decade’s work to finally have
the project underway. For me personally this is
something of a relief as for the past two years I have
predicted that we would be a building site by the time
the next AGM came round and twice proven to have
been overly optimistic!
Now that the work has begun it has ushered in a
period of great excitement and promise for our
Club. It is also an achievement in which all
members can and should take great pride.
• Ours is by far the biggest Surf Lifesaving
Club re-development in the State.
• Our Club has been acknowledged by the
Chair of the Surf Life Saving South Australia
Club Foundation as being the best financially
prepared that he has seen in his 20 years of
involvement with the Foundation.
• Our financial contribution is the biggest ever
made by any club and at $755,000 is nearer
13% than the requisite 11%.
• Our build thereby survived financial pressure
to reduce the area of the new Clubrooms by
140-150 square metres.
• Our recent years of prudent budgeting,
focussed fund raising, husbanding of
resources and the responsibility shown by
our budget managers has put us in such a
strong position to enable the scale of build
that we required.
This year the Covid-19 pandemic has also impacted
adversely on preparations for the re-development
because spatial distancing and group size restrictions
prevented us from having more than one major
working bee to move equipment from the Clubrooms
to storage. I would like to sincerely thank Vice-
President Kirk Dixon for his management and over-
sight of this major operation and all others who
helped.
As in previous years, I am particularly appreciative of
the commitment of other individuals who have
6 Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club 2019-2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements
stepped up to take on a leadership role in whatever
sector of the club. I started to list names, but this
became so fraught with the danger of offending some
by omission that I pressed delete! Nevertheless there
are some standouts.
Ben Wyschnja has done an excellent job as Life
Saving Services Officer, is our IT guru and has taken
on the role of consolidating this Annual Report.
Many of you will not know our Treasurer Neil Webster,
but his work in preparing the financial submission to
obtain funding for the re-development has been
exemplary, while Matt Smith and Bob Bruce (and
others) have provided practical advice to our
consulting architects, engineers and builders.
Club Captain Brad Watson and all Patrol Captains
have provided the leadership required to ensure that
the efforts of our Chief Instructor Lucinda Remilton
and our team of trainers and assessors is effectively
translated into effective beach management.
Tim Cannell and the coaching collective have
continued their amazing development programmes
while the Nipper leaders have again done a
superlative job. In areas of youth activity Darren Flynn
along with Jeff Collins, Hamish McMillan and team
Jucius/Dixon/Trim/Goldsmith/McLaren/Angel and
Read and others have been incredibly committed and
increasingly effective.
Pam Grant has been terrier-like in her quest for
sponsors and in organizing the sponsors event. Fund-
raising endeavours have been subdued because of
our partial and then total lock-down and knock-down,
but Dana Watts and Rod Ellis, bar staff and helpers
at the Lions BBQ’s have still kept income tinkling into
the coffers.
While this past year has not been an easy one for our
Club or community I would like to pay particular
tribute to the Club Council for their contributions and
acknowledge too their support of the Executive which
has been required to make a number of rapid or
unusual decisions. Since the last AGM we have had
a number of unfilled or vacant positions throughout
the entire year. This has placed an extra burden upon
the Councillors and I wish to end my remarks by
asking that you lighten their load a little.
How you might ask? Take a risk. Consider putting
your hand up, not just to help, but to lead. A club of
our numbers and talent should not have to begin yet
another season without a Secretary, Assistant
Secretary/Registrar, Sponsorship, Grants and
Fundraising Officer or Chief Instructor.
Please consider!

Vice President
Kirk Dixon
The end of the 2019/2020 season finds the Club in a
never seen before position. The Clubrooms have
been emptied of both people and items due to the
Covid-19 pandemic and the imminent demolition of
the building.
As of writing the Club has been completely emptied
apart from some essential rescue equipment. The
plan is to move this to our temporary patrol facilities
on Commodore Reserve to ensure that PESLSC has
rapid response capability for Horseshoe Bay. If this is
not possible due to timing issues the remaining patrol
equipment will be stored with all the other items in the
sheds on Hill St. It will be interesting to be working
from a remote site for at least the next season but I
feel that as a Club we will work through any of the
inconveniences.
I extend my thanks to everyone who helped in the
cleaning, packing, moving and storing of the Club
equipment and items this season. It was a
monumental task made easier and more manageable
through the help and hard work of many, many
people. I particularly want to thank the following
people for their extraordinary effort; Claudia
Goldsmith for her work in sorting the office, Dana
Watts amazing effort in the upstairs area, Sonia Reed
in ensuring our merchandise was sorted and packed,
Matt Smith for his work in physically removing hard to
reach items, Rod Ellis and Neil Webster for getting
the bar sorted, Jimmy Harding and helpers for getting
the fridges downstairs, Bob Bruce for all his work with
hot water services and radios and a big thank you to
Peter Francis for the large amount of time and effort
he has put in especially trailering items from the
Clubrooms to the sheds. Again, a big thank you to
every person who has help during this time, your time
and effort has been very much appreciated.
The strategic goals 2017-2020 have been:
• Financially able to support the
redevelopment of the club rooms:
• To activate current members to become
more involved in Club activities
• To retain more members from one season to
the next.
The strategic goals are due for review next season.
One of the limitations in reporting back on these goals
is a lack of focused data collection. Anecdotally
PESLSC is making gains towards these goals
however it would be more accurate to label these as
aspirational intentions as at this point there is no end
point or mechanism to measure these goals.
That being said, the Club is in an excellent financial
position going into the build phase of the new
Clubrooms and many members have put in a lot of
time and effort in getting us to this position. We could
not do it without people serving behind the bar,
cooking BBQs, organising and running events (such
as quiz nights), meeting and approaching potential
sponsors, running the 200 Club and countless other
fundraising activities. Well done to the Treasurer and
Officers in preparing and working to the Club budget
to control expenditure and allow us to be able to
support the redevelopment. This hard work from all
areas of the Club is going to be vitally important in the
coming seasons as we are hit with a reduced ability
to raise funds due to the lack of a physical building
and the uncertainty of the post Covid-19 economy.
8 Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club 2019-2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements
There has been a lot of work within the Junior area,
particularly in giving members the opportunity to
become more involved. This has been driven by the
fact that often the Junior area needs a higher level of
qualified involvement to run their programs and to
maintain the safety requirements. The Junior area
continues to be an important source to increase the
ranks of our fundraisers, beach help, officials, and
qualified lifesavers. This year this has been helped
with the added membership of an adult for every
Nipper and the support for the official courses.
The Youth squad continues to be a positive force to
engage and maintain the skills and interest of the
younger members of the Club. It continues to grow
and evolve to allow all the youth an outlet to
showcase their skills and interests if they wish.
Patrols have shown that people are changing in the
way they engage with the Club and lifesaving in
general. Even though there were less patrol groups
than previous years, the number of people completing
patrol hours was the same. This shows there is still
some thinking that is required to allow for maximum
engagement from our members and to maintain the
high level of protection on the beach that we and the
community expects from PESLSC.
Retaining members remains a challenge and will be
even more so going into next season without
clubrooms, however even with some remaining
uncertainty there is an exciting future for the Club and
I look forward to sharing this journey with the other
PESLSC members.

9 Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club 2019-2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements
Club Captain
Brad Watson
The 2019-20 season will be remembered in the
Club’s history for two main reasons: being the year
the major development was approved & started, and
how Covid-19 impacted open access to the Club we
all love.
Little needs to be said about the redevelopment as it’s
been a ten-year work in progress with countless
hours put in by some many members all contributing
time towards this marvellous building we will have
within eighteen months.
I am more concerned now how Covid-19 has
impacted not only on members training, but their
wellbeing in general. Some members have had huge
financial pressure placed upon them and their
families with all the restrictions placed on the
community; kids not going to school, teachers trying
to teach students online, workers told one day ‘sorry
we are closed until further notice’, it’s just a horrible
stressful situation. No one saw it coming, and there
was no previous experience that could be called upon
to know what our next move was.
I believe whole heartedly that when the Club’s
Executive met and called for the Club to shut down to
get ahead of the curve, that we led by example as
other clubs followed Port Elliot’s direction as we
moved with great purpose to keep our members as
safe as possible. This of course was not popular with
all members, but I am grateful the directions were
followed by all members.
Things are starting to ease four months later but is
subject to change at short notice. How we as a Club
move forward from here will be a defining period in
our long history. As we return to normal I am hoping
the Club can rally to help those in need and to help
spread the load over many.
Hopefully, Better times to come.
And two stand up paddle boards on the way!
See you on the beach.

Chief Instructor
Lucinda Remilton
With Reagan Moon deciding not to re-stand for Chief
Instructor at the AGM this season, PESLSC was left
without a Chief Instructor with no one willing to fill the
position. The position remained unfilled until
November, when I finally relented to the multiple
requests to fill the position, as it was becoming
evident a season without a chief instructor was not
going to be ideal for the club. I agreed to do the
position, on the condition that I would not sit on Club
Council and would not have a vote. Despite being a
trainer and assessor, I was new to Chief Instructor
and had not trained any bronze/SRC squads in recent
years and therefore was rusty in the finer points of the
awards. I thank everyone for their patience whilst I
found my feet and Kate Powell at SLSSA for her
assistance.
Taking on this position very late in the season, I have
a number of Club members to thank for their
assistance:
• Ian Grant and his troop of helpers for
conducting all the proficiencies;
• Jeff Collins and Darren Flynn for training the
bronze squad; and
• Peter Mason for training the SRC squad.
With the season coming to a premature end due to
Covid-19, this has left Bronze and SRC candidates
having not completed their assessment. Hopefully
they will return next season to obtain their award and
continue their lifesaving journey.
During the off-season Darren Flynn, Christine
Michelmore, Peter Michelmore and Kirk Dixon are
completing their Training Officer’s Certificate and I
look forward to their assistance with training squads
next season.
The conclusion of this season coincides with the
release of the new Bronze Medallion curriculum and
manual. This will see several changes in both the
Bronze and SRC awards for next season. A major
change is the removal of oxygen from the Bronze
qualification. This will require us to train more
members in ARTC, as ideally all patrols will need 2
ARTC holders moving forward.
Next season will bring new challenges, with not only
a new curriculum, but also training without a
Clubhouse. Despite this we will be endeavouring to
continue to run high quality training across all awards.
If you are interested in obtaining any new awards,
please ask when a course is running.

Ben Wyschnja
2019-2020 has been another great season of Surf
Life Saving at Port Elliot.
This has been my first season in the role, taking the
reins from Tappy. Many thanks must go to him for his
contribution to the role over the past years.
This season saw many alterations to our Life Saving
procedures, with credit to our members being able to
adapt well to changes surrounding patrols, radios and
IT aspects.
What has been particularly exciting for me is the roll
out of the IT systems into our organisation. The
operations app & iPads have been introduced and
have been well used by our patrols. The app has not
only saved time of manually entering records into
Surfguard, it has allowed Surfcom to see up to date
patrol information, without causing congestion from
several radio calls.
Our skills maintenance administration and
assessment has gone online as well. We had several
sessions and many members became proficient for
the season. Many thanks to Ian Grant and helpers for
running the skills maintenance, which expanded this
season to encompass the many updates.
With the operations app and skills maintenance
online, our Club has been one of the leading users of
SLSA’s IT systems. I am hoping that the water safety
hours will be able to be logged using an app in the
future.
Patrol rosters saw some minor changes, with the
number of patrol groups dropping to 10 (from 12 last
season). This was in part due to lower numbers
committing to a rostered patrol group, and some
previous Patrol Captains/ Patrol Vice Captains
choosing not to continue. Thanks to Ian Price, Steve
Overall, Matt Smith and Wayne Good for their
contributions over previous seasons to these roles.
IRB drivers, crew, ARTC operators and beach
management awardees were stretched a bit thin this
season. Members are encouraged to upskill as much
as possible and we plan to run more training courses
next season. The Patrol Captain’s course (formerly
Beach Management) is under redevelopment at a
national level and I look forward to members gaining
this award in future seasons.
We recorded the following statistics for the season:
• 176 members recorded patrol hours during
the season at Port Elliot
• 5 rescues
• 1 search
• 39 preventative actions
• 34 first aid cases (that an incident report was
logged)
• a total of 3,888.71 hours, inclusive of
3,025.38 patrol hours and 863.33 water
safety hours (such as Nippers, Same Wave
and carnival training) logged at Port Elliot.
I would like to make a personal thanks to the
following people for their support: our President
Peter Francis, Club Captain Brad Watson and Vice-
Captain Elly Smee, for their support to lifesaving,
Chris Michelmore for her assistance in recording
nippers patrol hours into Surfguard, Ian Grant for his
guidance of lifesaving procedures, Jeff Collins for his
mentorship, Margy Wyschnja for assisting with
administration and equipment, and of course I can’t
forget my wife Zoe for her support!
Above all, a great big thanks must go to all our
patrolling members, Patrol Captains and Patrol Vice
Captains, who have contributed so many hours to
our core business, Surf Life Saving.
See you on the beach.

2019-2020 season has been another without major
upsets in the area of radios.
Members have continued to care for the units and
have generally become more familiar with the
operation of them, particularly in the locks and
channel changes. Generally, the operation (not
ordering fish and chips, adhering to protocols) has
been of a high order and I must congratulate all
members for this aspect; thank you to all members for
your help this last season.
Season 2020-2021 will be in many ways different to
our operation. There will be no base, we will be
operating under somewhat difficult conditions, our
operations will be carried out in the patrol shelter on
channel 3 and the channel 1 ops’ will be totally line of
sight.
Operations with the IRB will be as normal but
connecting with Chiton and Goolwa on channel 1 will
be mostly unlikely. While it will be a year of some
frustration without a Clubhouse and the benefits that
go with it, we look toward 2021-2022 with new, bigger
Clubrooms, better amenities and easier access, a
better ability to have those social gatherings and
more space for training.

Surf Life Saving as a sport, as an emergency service
and a lifestyle has in the past largely been about
stretching ourselves, learning new skills and
overcoming challenge. On the beach or in the water,
we develop our skills to a level that feeds into those
things that we enjoy most about Surf. All this being
said, none of us would stick around for any of it, if we
didn’t have the mates and the moments that tie
everything together.
I think I could say without hyperbole, that this season
has been quite possibly the most challenging one
PESLSC has faced since its founding. As
Development Officer, I had set off into the season
aiming to bring a sense of positivity and purpose to
my role, with a need for constitutional reform still
bubbling away alongside a desire to elevate the
support we provide for our members. The best laid
plans.., or so the saying goes. With the AGM
complete, several key roles remained empty across
our Club including the important role of Junior
Manager.
This position of Junior Manager is crucial to our
Club’s success with these young members forming
nearly half our membership body, and the role
remained unfilled for the entire season, seeing me
serving as a coordinator by default, as I held the role
last year. Thanks go out to all of the leaders and
helpers across Nippers, and the carnival area who all
stepped up to do more than they should have to, in
order to keep delivering a high quality and much loved
juniors program. Thanks go out to Ben Jucius and
Naomi Dixon who served as Junior Carnival
Coordinators in what will be their final year, after
bringing their expertise and energy to the role for
many seasons. Thank you also, to all the parents who
bring their kids down, week in, week out, assisting our
leaders and running the BBQ, raising much needed
funds for our Club.
On top of the roller coaster our Junior Division were
already encountering, everyone was thrown a curve
ball with the nation-wide response from SLSA to
mitigate the risk from the Covid-19 pandemic which
saw our season shortened and the cancelling of all
State Title competitions, including the highly
anticipated Junior States. With our carnival kids, and
youth having trained hard all year in preparation, it
was understandable that they along with all of their
coaches and parents were still feeling somewhat
deflated. Surf Life Saving will never be the same after
the pandemic and it will fall on us all to grasp new and
innovative ways to make the most out of the
opportunities that still exist in Surf under a new
paradigm.
There will be many of these challenges that need to
be overcome in the season ahead, none perhaps
bigger than the fact that we’ll be trying to do all that
we do, without the shelter and comfort of a
Clubrooms. In the end, we will get by, it won’t be easy,
it won’t be the same, but we will make it through and
in the end we will be better for it.
Cheers.

Although it has been a diverse year with respect to
Covid-19 and the Club rebuild, the Auxiliary has
continued to assist members with a limited, but
successful, number of events.
In summary this year we hosted or participated in (at
a minimum):
• 1 Bunnings BBQ,
• 1 Quiz night,
• Regular Sat Nipper BBQ’s,
• 5 days of VacSwim,
• Alexandrina Outdoor movie event,
• Christmas Carols in Port Elliot,
• And lastly, but importantly, our regular bar
service on Saturdays and Thursdays.
To make any of these events happen, a group of
dedicated and giving volunteers was required. A huge
thank you, and words of appreciation, must go out to:
• our Barkeeper, Brian;
• Bar Manager – Rod;
• other Auxiliary members - Stewie, Willie,
June, Adona, and Dana; and
• all our other amazing volunteers.
So where to from here? Next year when we lack a
physical Clubhouse, social gatherings will still be
important to engage our membership. We will
continue to investigate new and exciting options that
will allow us to service our members as well as
continue to fundraise. If you have any ideas, please
feel free to pass them onto the Auxiliary. It is also
anticipated that when we do have our new building,
there will be a high demand for event bookings. This
may be the time for you to consider joining the
Auxiliary and helping with a function or two.
See you in the new season.

The 2019-20 season for me was relatively quiet.
Members’ concerns were once again fees, and how
the Club, members and patrols would function
working from temporary “premises”. Other than that
there were no issues of great concern. Thank you to
Club Council for always providing answers and
support for members.
It was good to see a large number of members turn
up, on the few occasions available, to prepare the
Clubrooms for its move and to pack and transport
equipment to the storage sheds in Hill Street.
Unfortunately the last patrols were cancelled due to
social distancing guidelines.
Life has changed so much, we are all worried about
our health, our families and our jobs and as we enter
a kind of “new normal” it’s incredible to see how these
changes affect how we live and how we have had to
adapt to cope in these difficult times.
This will, in the future not only apply to Covid-19, but
also to not having Clubroons to operate from.
The Club, and all members, are going to face difficult
times ahead with the rebuilding, temporary premises,
inconvenience and frustration but let’s accept this
with excitement and determination.
Regardless of what we have got, and what we
haven’t, all members are encouraged to continue
their membership, support and promote our Club to
ensure we come through this in the best possible
way. Let’s all accept the challenge.
I can repeat my last paragraph in last year’s report
because nothing happened….
Let us face these challenges with enthusiasm next
season and enjoy the history making times of working
out of shipping containers. What stories we will have
to tell in a season or two, looking out over the bay,
drink in hand. CHEERS!
In addition…
I undertook additional fundraising to assist with the
Club rebuild due to the ever increasing “blowout” of
unforeseen costs which were never taken into
account when funds were allocated to the project.
A Quiz Night, together with Silent Auction was held in
the Clubrooms on 2nd November 2019. Thank you to
everyone who donated prizes, please refer to earlier
pages of the Annual Report where their names are
listed. A huge thank you to Mark Watters our Quiz
Master and our Judges, Leanne, Tony and Kerry.
Thank you to Claudia & Adrian Goldsmith and Dana
Watts for their tremendous help and support. The
night was a huge success with more than $6000
raised through ticket sales, raffles, bar and wine sales
together with a very profitable Silent Auction.
The Glass Brick Fundraiser commenced in April
2019. Sadly the redevelopment delay was totally
unexpected and nothing that could have been
envisaged. So a BIG thank you to those people and
families who bought their brick in the early stages.
The close off date was set at 30th April 2020, but due
to the impact of Covid-19 on people’s lives and
earning capacity the deadline was extended to 30th
June 2020. The response has been fantastic. I am
very happy. Acknowledgement of glass brick buyers
is set out at the front of this Annual Report. A HUGE
thank you to everyone who has purchased one.
Please note deceased members bricks have been
initiated by family members.

Wow, what a season that 19/20 became... unfinished
in Covid-19 style.
We started the season with our open men, masters
men, juniors and women’s crews bringing in new and
returning members to the Club, after winter trainings,
members needing to be re-awarded and gain bronze
medallions. It was a busy and tedious start to the
season.
Resilience was built in our juniors, with the loss of
Tom Johnson early on followed by the sadness that
one of our new members in Jaxon Finch had suffered
in a major skateboarding incident with head injuries,
placing him in a coma until early December. The crew
was deeply saddened as was our whole boat area.
Luckily, Jaxon has made a strong recovery. Brayden
Miller stepped down from the crew due to strong
football commitments with South Adelaide. With the
remainder of the crew, Connor and Mikey, and the
importance of keeping our boys on the water, we
combined with Aldinga to add Jack Ryan and Ben
Meyer to the crew. Sadly, they didn’t get a chance at
the state champs to show their abilities but both boys
represented at a couple of carnivals each throughout
the season.
Our first carnival at Southport was a perfect day out
with a wave running and the sun shining. On the
weekend it was another hit out for some of our rowers
at Southport. A surprise in conditions with 3-4-foot
sets running through the course making it interesting
and exciting.
Port Elliot Women’s crew rowed for the first time this
season with a first-time rower in Brianna Williams and
a returning rower after a long break (approx 19 years)
Leanne Farr. Crew swept by Troy Irvin and continuing
rowers in Melissa Rebbeck and Tara-lee Irvin rowed
well through the break with a close 3rd place and a
2nd, but not finishing to injury.
Our open men and u/19 rowers joined to form a crew
and represented in the reserve grade where they won
3 out of 3 races convincingly. The crew was swept by
Troy Irvin and rowers Garth Reynolds, Dale Francis,
Mikey Osullivan, Connor Irvin and Brayden Miller.
The crew also didn’t finish the day due to injury of the
sweep. It was a perfect day with our crews enjoying
the atmosphere and conditions until we lost one of our
sweeps with Troy tearing his hamstring... that was
just the beginning to the rest of the seasons' ups and
downs.
The advantage of the injury to Troy Irvin was getting
other sweeps more involved with Steve jumping in
with the open men and juniors whilst Alg jumping
back in a boat after a long stint out (70 years young
they say) in with the women’s crew. Tappy also
stepped in when able as he does always supporting
our crews.
We next had a Surfboat carnival at Moana. Not
favourable rowing conditions with flat racing and a
slight headwind after the buoy turn, making it hard
and requiring good technique all race especially in the
start and turn.
Our open men’s crew as an almost complete crew
being swept by Steve Tummel rowed hard all day
finishing 2nd but wishing for some help on the way
home. Rowers in Garth Reynolds, Dale Francis,
Alistair Searle and Tom Bilney.
Our women's crew rowing reserves in one of the
largest fields finishing a close 5th overall also being
swept by Steve and rowers Tara-lee Irvin, Melissa
Rebbeck, Leanne Farr and Brianna Williams. With a
different sweep and flat conditions brought a test of
resilience and change. Lots were learnt throughout
the day.
17 Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club 2019-2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements
The u/19 boys were lucky enough to have Goolwa
sweep in Adam take them on for the day. It was also
a test of change for them rowing hard in flat conditions
and winning all 4 races they rowed in. Connor Irvin,
Mikey O’Sullivan, Brayden Miller and 4th Rower from
Aldinga Jack completed our crew for this season. The
boys had Connor and Mikey vying for State Team
selection adding extra workload throughout the day
rowing in different combinations with other
contenders. Good luck to these rowers trying out for
selection in a seat rowing process, which has never
been trialled before.
We headed to the Master's State Titles at Christies
Beach this year, high tide made for a later start and
then a tricky shore break as the tide turned the
conditions flat with not much help home. We had 3
crews representing Port Elliot SLSC and the Flying
Fish at the Masters' States. 160 Women, Port Elliot
Oardacious; swept by Alg Palaitis and rowers Leanne
Farr, Melissa Rebbeck, Brianna Williams and Tara-
lee Irvin. Rowing hard all day but finishing narrowly in
4th by a point. Our 160 men, the 40-year-old Virgins;
swept by Steve Tummel and rowers Garth Reynolds,
Rhys Robinson, Steven Overall and rowers complete
the crew Aaron Lindsey (Chiton Rocks) also narrowly
finishing in 4th. It is noted that the 160 age division
seems to be the hardest division with most open
division crews fitting in this age group. The highlight
of the day though goes to our 240 men’s crew, The
Good Ol Boys; swept also by Steve Tummel and
rowers Michael Lippett, Mark Williams, Eric Sheridan
and Alan Reynolds. They rowed hard all day and
finished off with the hold! The aggregate of 240 is 60
for each rower on average. This is definitely a sport
loved by all ages.
Our Club's highlight in the surfboat area was our state
selectors decided this year to select a crew via seat
rowing and choose the best four u/19’s through a
series of competitions, ergo testing and experience
from all u/19’s in the state. Port Elliot had 2 rowers
vying for selection, Mikey O'Sullivan and Connor Irvin.
Congratulations went to Connor Irvin for his selection
to represent SA in the u/19 men's Surfboat crew at
the Interstates held at Mollymook in February.
Backed up by myself being selected as Assistant
State Team Manager. We headed over to Mollymook
and drove from Sydney seeing the devastation that
the recent bushfires had caused in NSW. With big
surf at Mollymook, the event got moved to Batemans
Bay. A beautiful long stretch of beach met all crews
but due to time restrictions the state steam event was
held off until day 3 of the ASRL Open. Day 3 provided
a lot of action but unfortunately the event was stopped
early and the decision to complete the state team
event was decided to be run at the upcoming Surf
Lifesaving Australian championship on the Gold
Coast later in the season. Eventually in March our
states went into lockdown and no events were held
for the rest of the season. It was a numbing feeling for
our loss of competitions that we had trained for and
worked towards... but the reality of Covid-19 and
keeping our loved ones safe by remaining home in
isolation soon took over and we sat back and put life
into perspective. We waited anxiously though for
June to get the ok to return to surf rowing training in
South Australia whilst some states are still not
allowed back on the water.
So whilst we didn’t get to the end of the season, we
all realised that our love for surf boats remains strong
and we are working as a boat panel in all areas by
running squad style training in the pre-season, aiming
for a better season in 2020/2021.

Surf Sports Officer
Tim Cannell
This is my first report as the Surf Sports Officer, and
one that I am very pleased to contribute to. Whilst we
have traditionally seen Surf Sports as primarily the
domain of our younger members, I am very proud to
look across our competitors who range in age from 8
years old to their mid-sixties, all of whom have done
the Club proud in their endeavours.
Over the previous few years, we have seen our senior
ranks continue to grow with good retention of
competitors, matching the large numbers of Port Elliot
Juniors attending carnivals. Not only does having
such a broad range of athletes show great strength in
our Club, but it gives the juniors and youth
competitors a sense of pride and motivation to
continue. It provides a great engagement opportunity
for the Club.
Throughout the numerous carnivals held over the
course of the summer, Port Elliot again had some
very strong results across all age groups, proving
more than competitive across all disciplines,
especially in the well planned and enjoyed Friday
night Beach events at Seacliff. Beach flags, sprints,
2km beach run and relays producing consistent top 3
results. We preformed solidly in our surf swim and
craft races and of course with our excellent surf boat
teams. As expected in surf carnivals in SA, we
experienced a range of conditions from calm water in
the gulf to big surf on the mid coast, and our teams
took it all in their stride.
At the start of the season, SLSSA holds its Board
Riders state championships. This is a surfing event
split across long and short board competitions. Once
again, Port Elliot was quite dominant in this area,
bringing home 2 Gold and 2 Bronze Medals.
February saw our annual Club Champs held in the
wonderful waters of Horseshoe bay. This year, it was
planned as a fun day with some lighthearted banter
but solid competition. The winners were presented
with the Golden Flipper awards (an assortment of
random swim fins rescued from the skip bin and spray
painted gold). Over 25 members from U14 through
to Masters, competed in board, swim, ski and beach
events until the winners were crowned. Everyone,
including many spectators, enjoyed the day and the
comradery that comes from these days.
The State Masters Championships was lucky enough
to proceed, and our team did us proud returning with
several medals and many high place finishes. In fact
from our 5 individual competitors we came home with
5 medals. We also won gold in the 240 Men’s
Surfboats thanks to the “Good Ol’ Boys”, one of our 3
teams. Congratulations to you all.
Unfortunately with the onset of Covid-19, the highly
anticipated Senior and Junior State Championships
had to be cancelled in the week prior to the event.
This was extremely disappointing for all concerned,
as it really stands as the pinnacle of the year, where
all the hard work and training culminates in great
results.
As always, my most humble thanks to the Coaches,
Volunteers and Supporters who enable this busy area
of Surf Sports to run seamlessly. An extra special
thanks goes to our tireless officials in Rod Ellis, Peter
Cummings, Robert Mooney, Naomi Dixon, Lyndel
Santibanez, Adona Cervantes, Andrew Brown,
Rebecca Thompson, Brian Edwards, Ruth Miller and
Dana Watts. Without these wonderful officials, we
would not be able to compete, and appreciate their
support and efforts very much. Please consider
volunteering to become at an official at one carnival
next season. The training is straight forward and
predominantly online, and it is a rewarding way to
offer something back to the Club. Many hands make
light work, and if we have a wide range of officials to
call on, the amount of time given is minimal across a
season.
I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Ben
Jucius and Naomi Dixon who have coordinated the
19 Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club 2019-2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements
Junior competition/carnival group for many years.
Overseeing well over 80 children in various grades is
a massive task, not to mention the coaches…
Countless unseen hours go into this role, and they
have really excelled in it, taking PESLSC to the next
level at Junior Carnivals. Your efforts are deeply
appreciated by all at the Club, and we wish you all the
best as you hand over the reigns at the start of next
season.
Many thanks also go to Liza Trim and Alice Smart
who have guided their group of amazing young
people through to the end of their junior journey.
These ladies have been incredible in their support of
this group over the years, and we wish them well as
they finish up their current coaching roles. We look
forward to continuing to see you around the Club for
many years to come.
Finally we are extremely grateful for the support of our
sponsors. We would like to once again formally thank
Northpoint Fleurieu for the donation of two brand new
Kracka Nipper Boards. These boards are the top of
the range and something that is a wonderful
acquisition for our Club. The U13’s were absolutely
delighted when they were delivered in March, and
looked very fast on them. Unfortunately, they didn’t
see the water in competition with States cancelled,
but we look forward to next season where they will
take pride of place in our “quiver”!
Overall our objective for the Surf Sports community to
not only to offer opportunities for individuals to
achieve the best results they can in competition, but
to ensure that these skills and proficiencies develop
the best lifesavers possible. A group of people whose
dedication to their sport will be reflected in their
service to the community.

Treasurer’s Report
Neil Webster
The Profit and Loss Statement for the financial year
ending June 30th, 2020 shows some unusual income
to make up for fewer BBQ and bar sales. Glass brick
sales of $27,660 created an important income thanks
to Pam Grant’s excellent management. Membership
payments of $55,099 kept pace with the previous
year’s $57,748. Membership fees were left the same
after an 18.5% increase the previous year. The
Competition Levy was also unaltered, at $100 for both
junior and senior competitors. This covered the
invoices from Surf Life Saving SA (SLSSA) which
were $99 per person.
More competitors paid the levy up front for the season
than previously, and most pay-as-you-go competitors
paid promptly. The amount owing at the end of the
season was very small, a big improvement on
previous years. Thank you to competitors and their
families. Thanks also to Naomi Dixon, Adona
Cervantes, Tara Irvin and Tim Cannell for passing on
information about competition nominations, checking
on payments of fees, and chasing up some slow to
respond. State Championships cancelled due to
Covid-19 restrictions and $44 refunds were offered,
40% of which were donated back to the Club.
Sponsors, Club 200 members and other donations
provided $16,947. Some extra grants were
successfully applied for and spent on life saving and
some competition equipment. SLSSA trust fund
distributions were higher at a timely $19,000.
Budgeting worked well again. Budget managers were
diligent in sticking to their allotments and other
expenses were covered without unduly restricting
spending. However, building costs increased steeply
this year to $92,478, and an adjustment was made in
the budget review in January.
Most of the drama is seen on the Balance Sheet as
of June 30th, 2020. The first notable balance sheet
item is $455,832 in the Incentive Saver account. This
represents our savings for redevelopment, along with
payments already made totalling $165,972 in the New
Clubrooms fixed asset. Payments went to engineers,
architects, quantity surveyors and cost managers for
concept design, floor plans, sketches, planning, cost
estimates and contract documentation. Other
payments went to SA Water, Alexandrina Council and
the construction industry training levy. Our initial
commitment of $605,000 is exceeded by an extra
$16,804.
The Development Fund of $330,000, listed under
Current Liabilities, is the grant from Alexandrina
Council, which was invoiced on 26th June, 2020. It is
a liability because we are bound by written agreement
to spend it on the development project and nothing
else. When the invoice was paid in July 2020, the
money was deposited in the Incentive Saver account
to earn interest at 1.2% per annum at better rate than
any term deposit, at just under 1%.
Our financial position is strong, and we are well
placed to pay our share of the New Clubrooms and to
borrow extra funds to fit out and furnish it.

Club Championships In some Clubs these championships are highly
competitive and are used to select teams for
Competition, but Port Elliot adopt the motto of “having
serious fun”.
There were three age groups – Youth (U14), Open
(U30), and Masters (30 plus). Somehow Elly Smee
managed to talk her way into competing in Masters 5
years ahead of schedule, and Dave Palmer turned
back his clock to compete in the Open/Youth Division.
Events were the long run, swim, boards, flags, sprints
and the ski. Jack Read totally dominated the long run
winning by close to a 100metres. Apart from that,
racing was close across all categories, with some
last-minute efforts seeing late positional changes. Elly
Smee and Sonia Read put their bodies on the line in
their flag event, both ending up with faces full of sand.
Tim Cannell competed and organised the day – his
crowning moment was losing his board shorts during
the swim and had to turn around to retrieve them.
Luckily he had bathers underneath. Dave Read
assisted with being an official in his own unique style,
and Kirk Dixon helped set the buoys in the IRB. Tim
Cannell organised for the category winners to receive
a “golden flipper”. The aim was achieved with
everyone having fun.

Masters State Championships Masters State Championships was held at Christies
Beach from the 29th February to the 1st of March,
2020.
This season we had a small team of 5 competitors
compete over 2 days of competition. The beach
events and ironman were held Saturday afternoon
and the individual and team events in the water were
held Sunday.
We only had one team event this year, being the blue-
ribbon event, 170yrs taplin relay, with Ian Price on ski,
Bryce Walker as the swimmer and David McLaren on
board. Our team (186yrs) finished 6th in a strong field
of 10 Teams
Our results from the last 3 years have been a little up
and down with Port Elliot’s results:
• 2018 at Christies Beach; 11th with 66.2 points
• 2019 at Horseshoe Bay; 8th with 162.8 points
• 2020 at Christies Beach; 12th with 67 points
This season we had no new competitors join our
states team and no females competing, two focus
areas for the future.
Thanks to Tim Cannell and Dave Palmer for their
work entering our team, and to our officials Ruth
Miller, Sonia Reed, Brian Edwards and Lyndall
