I hope that this letter finds you and your family well as we begin the second half of the school year. It is amazing how fast the school year passes. The second half of the school year is an exciting time for our staff and students. Our seniors are afforded the opportunity to participate in many activities which culminate with graduation on May 18th; all of our staff and students continue to work diligently in the classroom in preparation for the myriad of advanced placement and state required testing opportunities later this spring, winter athletic seasons conclude with district and state competitions, our spring athletic season begins, and many of our students continue participating in several extra-curricular and team competition activities. It is truly amazing to be part of this Pirate Community and to have the opportunity to see our staff and students continuing to excel in and out of the classroom. This second semester we are asking for your assistance and participation in our first annual Pirate Challenge for Education Golf Tournament to be held at the Port Charlotte Golf Club on March 5th starting at 12:30 pm. The goal is to raise $10,000 to assist with paying for substitute teachers needed when our regular education teachers are proctoring exams this spring. We want to ensure that students not testing are able to maintain the academic focus by staying in their classes during required testing days. You can help by registering to play golf, becoming a sponsor, and/or donating items for auction. More information about the Challenge for Education along with the registration forms can be found in this newsletter. We thank you for your support! Please remember that everyone in this Pirate Community shares in the responsibility in the success of our students and staff as we continue towards the goal of being the “BEST” in the State of Florida. Continue to assist one another both in and out of the classroom. It is the little things that each one of does each day that brings us closer towards our goal. Best of luck this semester! ATTENTION ALL PARENTS & STUDENTSFLORIDA STANDARDS ASSESSMENTS (FSA) UPDATE!

As many of you are aware, our state has been in a period of transition as we move in the direction of new statewide assessments. The FCAT has now been replaced with the FSAs – Florida Standards Assessments. In an effort to keep all students and their families informed of major changes occurring this school year in the administration of required state assessments, please note the following calendar of test dates and student population affected. Please keep these dates in mind when planning vacations, doctor appointments, college visits, etc. All students are expected to participate in the state assessments for which they are assigned either by grade level or course enrollment. Student results on these state assessments will be used to determine not only the scheduling of courses for the following school year, but also the meeting of state-mandated graduation requirements. § Every test needs to be taken seriously. § Every student needs to prepare for the assessment. § Every student needs to be in attendance on test day.

If you have specific questions regarding your child’s assigned test and test score implications, please contact your child’s Guidance Counselor immediately: § Rebel Balkman, Grade 9 Guidance Counselor § Jodi Booher, Grade 10 Guidance Counselor § Ashly Byington, Grade 11 Guidance Counselor § Pam Bennett, Grade 12 Guidance Counselor

I wish students the very best as they prepare for state-mandated testing this spring. Show your Pirate PRIDE! Good luck!

A REAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCE As you walk into the dance room of Higher Ground Performing Arts Center, you come face to face with... yourself. For most of the Spanish Club members, the oversized mirror may have been more intimidating than the dancing itself. Nevertheless, dance instructor, Mrs. Candales, was welcoming toward our group of mostly inexperienced dancers. She enthusiastically introduced herself, positioned us, and turned on the Latin music. We began with a “simple” hip movement. The mirror was in full effect; we couldn’t stop laughing at each other’s broken dance moves. Mrs. Candales walked over to me, took my hands, and told me to imitate her. After we danced and spun around she went danced with my friend, Samantha Nielsen. “Although I go to my own dance classes twice a week, I was so nervous that I would trip over myself when she was dancing with me.” says Nielsen. We were guided through a few more steps before being paired with others. Then we rotated through dance partners and around the room. Mrs. Candales taught the Spanish Club how to properly dance the Salsa and the Bachata. At the end of the session, I snapped a quick picture in hopes to document the growth of the Spanish Club members that attend the Latin dance class from the first time to future lessons. We, members of the Spanish Club, send a massive thank you to Mrs. Candales and Higher Grounds for hosting this unforgettable exposure to traditional Latin dancing.By: Hannah Madison, Vice President of Spanish Club (11)

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW... The College Reach Out Program (CROP), formerly known as Scholars Club was established in 1983 by the Florida Legislature to motivate and prepare students in grades 6 through 12 to pursue and successfully complete a postsecondary education. Participants are students who otherwise would be unlikely to seek admission to a community college, state university, or independent postsecondary institution without special support and recruitment efforts. FGCU’s College Reach Out Program serves 25 schools in the Southwest Florida five-county area. Through activities such as University Experience Days, after school enrichment programs and summer programs, students gain skills and abilities in the arts, math, reading, and essay writing. PCHS Scholars Club’s number one priority is voluntary community service.

SCHOLARS CLUB UPDATE Scholars Club would like to take this opportunity to send a heartfelt thank you to the Faculty and Staff of PCHS for participating in our Angel Tree Project over the holidays. Forty “Angels” were served from our campus alone! Our goal for next year is 50 Angels!

YEARBOOK Didn’t pre-order a yearbook? The LAST pre-order at school will be February 3rd through the 5th during lunches in the cafeteria for $80. We now have videos included. Personal engraved name plates are an extra $6.

INTERACT CLUB The Interact Club, sponsored by the Rotary Club, is a club based on service to others in the community. The club’s main goals are to conduct at least two service projects - one regarding the community, and one regarding international issues. The Port Charlotte High School Interact Club conducts an annual canned food drive during the holidays to assist local families in need. To help support families a little further away, this year, Interact held an ‘Item Drive’ to help collect household items for flood victims in South Carolina. Rotary Club aims to prevent Polio, so as an international project, Interact likes to set up different fund raisers to raise money to prevent polio in underprivileged countries. Interact is an excellent and fun way to get involved in the community!
