What you’ll coverWhy choose this cours e?If you want to work in the commercialmusic sector of the entertainmentindustry, as a singer, songwriter, musicianor producer for example, this course isideal for you. You'll have the opportunityto develop your skills and knowledge inmusic production and recording.

About the courseThrough our Joint Honours Scheme youcan combine two or three subjects totailor your degree to your interests, areasof skill and career aspirations.

Popular Music Production is part of theElectronics and Sound subject group, soyou'll be studying with other students whoare also interested in electronics, mediatechnologies, and popular music. Ourstaff are also actively involved in appliedresearch in these areas.

How you’ll learnYou’ll learn through lectures, face to facetutorials and practical work in the studios.Studio work will involve developing skillsin preparing and recording programmematerial, and then processing and editingit to create a finished product. You willoften be required to work to strictdeadlines with others in a group on aproduction. Presentation of musical, videoor multimedia work and other practicalartefacts may be a part of the assessmentprocess in some modules.

Every year we stage our graduate DegreeShow. The event provides you with theopportunity to showcase your final yearwork as well as making vital industrycontacts, and it’s a really high profileevent in the city’s calendar.

If you don't have the appropriatequalifications to start this course, you canapply to study the Technology FoundationProgramme for a year first.

Where you will study: Derby Campus – Markeaton Street site.

Entry requirements: Academic – 220-300 UCAS tariff points, ofwhich at least 200-240 must be from yourInternational Baccalaureate or equivalentqualification.

Duration: 3 years full time

Course fees: It depends what subject youcombine Popular Music Production with.If you combine it with a classroom-basedsubject, it will cost £9,945 per year*. If youcombine it with a resource-intensivesubject or a specialist subject it will cost£10,225 per year*. Your careerWhen you graduate you'll be wellprepared to work as a performer,producer or recording engineer in theindustry, or you could choose to work inareas such as sound design or sound forgames.

You could also become a music teacher ifyou study a PGCE after you’ve completedyour degree.

You'll have the ability and confidence todeal with professional bodies such as thePerforming Rights Society (PRS), BritishAcademy of Composers and Songwriters,British Phonographic Industry (BPI), andthe Mechanical Copyright ProtectionSociety (MCPS).
