Why choose this course?If you would like a career in third worlddevelopment and community projectmanagement, then this course is for you.You’ll develop specialist skills in theseareas and in capacity building, povertyalleviation and empowerment

programmes aimed at improving livingconditions for people in poverty. You’llhave the opportunity to do fieldworkoverseas, to see how developmenttheories relate to practical issues andexperiences of people living in thedeveloping world.

About the courseDuring this course you’ll learn about thedevelopment gap between rich and poorcountries, social justice, women’s rights,globalisation, democratisation andenvironmental impacts. You’ll look atpatterns of political, socio-economic andenvironmental change in less developedcountries in Africa, the Middle East, theCaribbean and Asia.

How you’ll learnYou’ll be taught by lecturers who areexperienced and actively involved inresearch and consultancy in lessdeveloped countries. This means you’ll belearning all the latest theory and will bekept up to date with what’s new in thisfield.

Your careerYou’ll develop specialist skills, such asmanaging projects, advocacy, communityrelations management and the ability tomake change in communities. This willopen up many career opportunities foryou in the field of development. You couldwork for aid agencies, developmentorganisations, transnational corporationsor public and voluntary bodies. Recentgraduates are now working for theDepartment for InternationalDevelopment, the United NationsDevelopment Programme, the VoluntaryService Overseas project and alsoteaching in China as part of the project toimprove education for migrant workers’children.

Additional informationYou’ll have the opportunity to go to TheGambia to explore issues such as healthand healthcare delivery by visitinghospitals and clinics, and look at the roleof education by visiting schools andeducational institutions. You’ll evaluatetourism as a strategy for developmentand investigate alternative or sustainabletourism. You’ll also study the importanceof agriculture in The Gambia by visitingrural projects such as women’s vegetablegardens.

What you’ll coverYou can combine Third WorldDevelopment with other subjectsincluding International Relations andGlobal Development, Geography,Sociology or Law. This subject can bestudied as a major, joint or minor pathwayas part of your joint honours degree,which will determine how many modulesyou’ll choose at each stage.

Where you will study: Derby Campus – Kedleston Road site.

Entry requirements: Academic – 260-300 UCAS tariff pointsfrom your International Baccalaureate orequivalent qualification.

Duration: 3 years full time

Course fees: It depends what subject you combineThird World Development with. If youcombine it with a classroom-basedsubject, it will cost £9,945 per year*. If youcombine it with a resource-intensivesubject or a specialist subject it will cost£10,225 per year*.
