2 Manufacture 2.1 The products are manufactured from PVC-U in an injection-moulding process: the bodies of the gullies, back entry bend, hoppers and gully traps from golden-brown coloured PVC-U and the dip tubes, gully gratings and cover plates from black polypropylene. 2.2 As part of the assessment and ongoing surveillance of product quality, the BBA has:

• agreed with the manufacturer the quality control procedures and product testing to be undertaken

• assessed and agreed the quality control operated over batches of incoming materials

• monitored the production process and verified that it is in accordance with the documented process

• evaluated the process for management of nonconformities

• checked that equipment has been properly tested and calibrated

• undertaken to carry out the above measures on a regular basis through a surveillance process, to verify that the specifications and quality control operated by the manufacturer are being maintained.

2.3 The management system of Polypipe Ltd t/a Polypipe Building Products has been assessed and registered as meeting the requirements of BS EN ISO 9001 : 2015 by BSI (Certificates FM00318).

3 Delivery and site handling 3.1 The universal gullies, bottle gullies and back entry bends are supplied in polythene bags. Where packaging is used it should be retained during storage. It is important that care is taken to avoid damage. 3.2 The products should be protected from direct sunlight if a prolonged period of storage on site is envisaged. 3.3 Each gully and back entry bend carries a label bearing the BBA logo incorporating the number of this Certificate. 3.4 Handling, storage and transportation should be in accordance with BS 8000-14 : 1989, BS EN 1610 : 2015 and the recommendations of this Certificate.

Assessment and Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on Polypipe Gullies.

Design Considerations

4 Use

4.1 Polypipe Gullies are satisfactory for use in domestic underground drains and public and private sewers for the conveyance, by combined or separate systems, of surface water or domestic sewage, as is permitted to be discharged into public sewers by the Water Industry Act 1991, and surface water and sewage as is permitted and defined by the Sewerage (Scotland) Act 1968 and the Water and Sewerage Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.

4.2 The gullies have not been assessed for use with untreated trade effluents and such use is outside the scope of this Certificate. 4.3 The gullies are for external use with 110 mm diameter pipes and fittings to BS 4660 : 2000, BS EN 1401-1 : 2009, BS EN 13476-1 : 2007 and BS EN 13476-2 : 2007. The gullies must be installed adjacent to buildings where they cannot be subjected to vertical loading.

5 Practicability of installation The products are designed to be installed by a competent general builder, or a contractor, experienced in below-ground drainage work.

6 Flow characteristics

The gullies will have the normal flow characteristics associated with PVC-U underground sewerage systems. When measured with the flow entering through the back inlet, the maximum flow capacity is 200 litres per minute.

7 Strength

When installed correctly, the gullies will have adequate strength for use in situations in which pipes to WIS 4-35-01, BS EN 1401-1 : 2009 and BS EN 13476-2 : 2007 are suitable. They are not suitable for use in areas subject to vertical loading.

8 Performance of joints

8.1 The performance of joints, when correctly made, will not be adversely affected by thermal expansion or contraction.

8.2 Joints with the pipeline remain watertight under conditions of pipeline movement in excess of those expected to occur in normal good drainage practice. 8.3 The seal of the rodding access dip tube will withstand an air pressure of 50 mm water gauge and will not, therefore, nullify the effect of the water seal in the bottle gully.

9 Resistance to chemicals The gullies have adequate resistance to the type and quantity of chemicals likely to be found in domestic sewage.

10 Resistance to elevated temperatures The gullies have adequate resistance to the normal temperature range of domestic sewerage.

Page 8: Polypipe Ltd t/a Polypipe Building Products...The schedule of the current scope of accreditation for product certification is available in pdf format via the UKAS link on the BBA website

11 Maintenance

11.1 The gullies provide adequate access for rodding the drain with conventional cane or polypropylene drain rods. Care must be taken to avoid damage to the gully body when using rods with brass ferrules at the joints.

11.2 The universal gullies are cleaned by hand after removal of the hopper grating or cover plate. The grating and dip tube of the bottle gully must be removed to enable access to the drainage system. 11.3 Silicone grease should be applied to the bottle gully ring seal before the product is reassembled.

12 Durability

When used in the context of this Certificate, the materials from which the component parts of the gullies are manufactured will not significantly deteriorate and the products can be expected to have a life equivalent to that of the PVC-U drainage system.

13 Reuse and recyclability The products contain PVC-U and polypropylene, which can be recycled.

Installation

14 General Installation must be carried out in accordance with this Certificate, the Certificate holder’s installation instructions, BS 8000-0 : 2014, BS 8000-14 : 1989, BS EN 1610 : 2015, and, where applicable, BS EN 752 : 2008.

15 Procedure 15.1 Polypipe Gullies should be bedded on a minimum depth of 100 mm of nominal single-sized aggregate having no sharp edges 15.2 Backfilling is carried out using suitable granular material, as described in section 15.1, up to a level of 100 mm above the crown of the trap. At shallower depths, or if preferred, the gully and trap may be surrounded by a lean mix concrete. 15.3 Connections to the universal gullies are made by cutting the appropriate-sized aperture in the hopper grid blanking plate or through one of the moulded bosses in the hopper body (rectangular hopper) (see Figure 3a).

Page 9: Polypipe Ltd t/a Polypipe Building Products...The schedule of the current scope of accreditation for product certification is available in pdf format via the UKAS link on the BBA website

Figure 3 Typical gully installation

15.4 Provision is made in the bottle gully grating for the connection of 68 and 65 mm square downpipes or 32, 40 and 50 mm wastepipes. Connection is made by cutting the appropriate aperture in the gully grating and inserting the appropriate downpipe or wastepipe (see Figure 3b). 15.5 Use of the back inlet gully and back entry bend provides connection for a variety of waste and rainwater adaptors, up to and including 110 mm diameter pipe. The back entry bend is solvent-welded into the 110 mm diameter boss provided in the back inlet gully body (see Figure 3c). 15.6 Inlet connections can also be made by solvent-welding the appropriate adaptor into the back inlet gully sockets (see Figure 3d). 15.7 The maximum depth to invert at which the gully should be installed is 600 mm. 15.8 The outlet and inlet pipes, where appropriate, must be protected by paving or concrete to prevent damage by garden implements.

Technical Investigations

16 Tests 16.1 Tests were carried out and the results assessed to determine:

• dimensional accuracy

• airtightness

• watertightness

• flow capacity

• effect of thermal cycling

• ease of rodding and cleaning

• ease of jointing

• strength of grating. 16.2 An evaluation of existing data was made to determine:

• resistance to chemicals

• suitability and durability of materials

• resistance to impact

• flow characteristics

• tensile strength

• long-term creep behaviour

• low temperature brittleness

• Vicat softening point

• likelihood of self or induced siphonage

• effectiveness of seal

• ease of cleaning

• resistance to blockage.

17 Investigations 17.1 The manufacturing process was evaluated, including the methods adopted for quality control, and details were obtained of the quality and composition of the materials used. 17.2 An evaluation was made of the products’ practicability of installation.
