POLYCITY FINAL CONFERENCE, VISIONS OF SUSTAINABLE URBAN ENERGY SYSTEMS

16th – 17th SEPTEMBER 2010

1. General Overview and methodology (1/5)

The POLYCITY project has been developed in Cerdanyola del Vallès during the last 5 years. The demonstration activities related to the demand side are the design, construction and monitoring of three buildings (one office building and two blocks of social housing).

POLYCITY FINAL CONFERENCE, VISIONS OF SUSTAINABLE URBAN ENERGY SYSTEMS

16th – 17th SEPTEMBER 2010

1. General Overview and methodology (2/5)

These buildings are a demonstration focus in the context of Alba Park, a new development in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona of over 300 hectares where more than 3,400 households (1,300 public and 2,100 private) will be constructed over the coming years. Thus, POLYCITY has, in Cerdanyola, an important replication area for direct transfer the results of the experience.

The Alba Park urban development and planning documents reflect a clear commitment to reduce the energy and C02 emissions related to the new buildings and urban areas. In this sense the Alba Park area planning regulations and concepts make it obligatory for all the new buildings to include passive and active energy efficiency measures in all constructions.

POLYCITY FINAL CONFERENCE, VISIONS OF SUSTAINABLE URBAN ENERGY SYSTEMS

16th – 17th SEPTEMBER 2010

Is important to note that the main results of the POLYCITY experience in Cerdanyola del Vallès will be completed by the end of April 2011 when the 3 building monitoring data and the results of the interaction process with tenants will be available for analysis and processing. Finally it is important to consider that POLYCITY Cerdanyola is a very interesting pilot experience for the new created Catalan Housing Agency (Parliament of Catalonia, 2009) in relation to developing its energy efficiency and C02 reduction policy. The Climate Change Action Plan for Catalonia (Generalitat of Catalonia, 2009) establishes an annual target reduction of 0.7 million tonnes of C02 for buildings.

The monitoring data provided in 2010 and 2011 for the three POLYCITY demostration buildings will be very useful to analyse the effectiveness, in terms of energy efficiency and C02 emissions reduction, of the architectural and interaction measures implemented.

16th – 17th SEPTEMBER 2010

1.General Overview and methodology (5/5)

The methodology used can be structured along the two lines of work described initially:

• Energy demand and C02 emissions reduction related to the new passive measures implemented.

The methods used can be ordered according to three main typologies

Simulation methods (CALENER, ENERGY PLUS, DESIGN BUILDER)

Monitoring systems (ADVANCED for 8 dwellings offering the segmented energy consumption; GENERAL for 77 dwellings with total electric and gas consumption for each dwelling).

Cost benefit analysis (Integrating all the data produced).

Innovative interaction model in order to increase tenant’s awareness and responsible energy use. In this case PARTICIPATORY methods are being used in order to facilitate the interaction and the transparency in the relations between public administration and new tenants.

2. Results related to energy demand and efficiency (1/8)

Different innovative passive measures have been applied in the three buildings. At the Synchrotron office building the main measures that have been implemented are:

Glass with low thermal transmittance (south façade).

Connection to the district heating and cooling high efficiency network.

Extra insulation.

At Alba Park Social Housing (Córdoba Street building) the measures that have been implemented are:

Extra insulation made with recycled and naturals materials that will provide lower thermal transmittance than that demanded by POLYCITY project and national regulations.

Walls U<0.6W/m2K Roof U<0.3W/m2K Floor U<0.5 W/m2K

High performance double glazed windows with thermal transmittance of 1.3 W/m2K.

Trombe Wall in the southern façade for preheating in winter and ventilation in summer.

All the flats have been designed to facilitate natural ventilation, with windows on both façades and with access to a manually operated chimney-vent.

16th – 17th SEPTEMBER 2010

The energy savings in the 3 demo buildings is over 70%, the best case being the Alba Park residential building. In terms of C02 emission reductions, the results in residential buildings are about 8Kg C02/m2/year.

These results show the effectiveness of the demonstration measures that could be considered very replicable, especially the trombe wall taking into account the relative low economic cost and the crossed ventilation.

However, these results must not be considered as definitive. The monitoring data provided in April 2011 will add more realistic information regarding the savings actually achieved.

3. Results related to the interaction process (1/4)

The POLYCITY experience in the demonstration buildings has also created important added value in relation to adapting the interaction policy of the Public Housing Authorities. Three main results can be considered:

Awareness of practical tools and materials to help tenants in the use of demonstration measures applied in their buildings.

Contract model development to facilitate the interaction with tenants for the intelligent use of the energy in buildings

Interaction tools to facilitate on line direct recommendations to adapt the energy consumption in buildings.

3. Results related to the interaction process (2/4)

The POLYCITY experience has facilitate to the Catalan Housing Secretary to develop a model to promote and develop the active demand management in public social housing buildings .

3. Results related to the interaction process (3/4)

Awareness of practical tools and materials to help tenants in the use of demonstration measures applied in their buildings. All the dwellings (77) have an specific poster practical guide to facilitate the use the passive measures.

3. Results related to the interaction process (4/4)

Contract model development to facilitate the interaction with tenants for the intelligent use of the energy in buildings Interaction tools to facilitate on line direct recommendations to adapt the energy consumption in buildings.

Through the eSESH (ICT PSP) project, approved this year. The Catalan housing Secretary will develop the POLYCITY experience related to the interaction with tenants, testing two services: Energy Awarenes And Energy Management

MAIN CONCLUSIONS

The POLYCITY experience developed in 3 demonstration buildings can be considered as excellent in terms of the future implementation of the new EU Energy Performance of buildings Directive (EPBD).

The three POLYCITY demo buildings can be considered as a living lab that is very useful both for the specific urban development of the Alba Park and also for the development of the Catalan legislation and regulations related to energy efficiency in buildings.
