1977 Farm Bill (Public Law 95-113) passed, giving USDA responsibility for a wide range of nutrition activities shared with DHEW (Department of Health, Education, and Welfare) including dietary advice to the public.

USDA’s Human Nutrition Information Service (HNIS) developed nutritional guidelines & by 1984 developed the Food Wheel.

Pyramid’s demise and its larger significance for the USDA’s and the government’s favoritism to corporate interests was publicized repeatedly.
