The Mornington Peninsula Shire is offering a wonderful opportunity to carers of people with disability by providing short term respite accommodation at the historic Police Point Respite Cottages situated in Portsea.

About the Police Point Shire Park & Respite CottagesStaying at the historical Police Point Shire Park is a truly unique experience. The Respite Cottages are situated on the 17.5 hectare Police Point Shire Park, Portsea, which is approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne’s CBD. With its outstanding coastal scenery and panoramic views of Bass Strait, the park has a rich history that played an important role in shaping the early settlement, quarantine and defence of Victoria.

There are only four cottages in the park used for accommodation, three of these are used for respite

care and one is used for an artist-in-residence program, also run by the Mornington Peninsula Shire.

The renovated 2 and 3 bedroom cottages are fully contained with a sitting room, kitchen and dining room, bathroom, vegetable boxes and verandah.

What is respite care?Caring for someone with disability can be a valuable and rewarding experience, but there are times when you might need a break. Respite care allows you to have a break from your everyday life. At Police Point Respite Cottages you can relax in an interesting and peaceful environment from 2 – 6 nights and come back feeling refreshed.

Am I eligible? If you are caring for a person with disability without getting paid, you are an unpaid carer, or a family carer. Caring is not your occupation, but something you do as a spouse, partner, parent, sibling or perhaps as a friend, neighbour or young carer. You don’t have to be related to someone to be a carer.

If you are a carer, you are eligible to stay at Police Point Respite Cottages. You can bring your family along too, but please keep in mind that respite means having a break from the person you care for. The cottages are not wheelchair accessible.

If the above criteria don’t describe your situation, but you are in need of a respite break, get in touch with us at [email protected] and we will consider your individual circumstances.
