Travel Opportunities for Advanced Spanish Students

Nearly every year, the MVHS World Languages Department organizes a trip to a Spanish-speaking destination. These trips are open to students in good standing that are enrolled in, have been enrolled in, or will be enrolled in Spanish 3 or higher at the time of travel.

We are currently working on organizing a trip to Peru for the 2020-2021 school year (during spring break). Parent inter-est surveys have been distributed. If you would like a copy of the survey to fill out, please send your student to see Sr. Norton in room 202.

If you would like to learn more about the trip, we will have an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 25, at 6:00 p.m., in room 206.

It is never too late to beef up your ACADEMIC RESUME and your FUTURE MARKETABILITY. Why not broaden your activities to include one of the most beneficial and sought after skills: communication?

According to an article published on December 2, 2015, on CNBC.com, entitled “The Skills Employers are Looking For” by Stacy Rapacon, “Communication skills ranked as the most or second-most desired baseline skill in all industries. Organizational skills and writing abilities were also in high demand across the board and came in second and third among the most commonly requested skills by employers overall.”

Participating in speech and debate activities in high school – where we compete in 15 different debate, public speaking and interpretation (acting) events – provides high school students a fun way to learn good communication skills that include: writing,

public speaking, researching, analytical skills, as well as building self-confidence.

If there isn’t time in your busy after-school schedule, consider signing up to take EN751W and/or EN752W Advanced Speech and Debate, now (or next year). This is a weighted (can boost your GPA) English elective offered during 7th period and provides students time to work on competitive speech and debate events. If you didn’t sign up but believe you missed your chance, come to room 725 to visit with Ms. Howell.

SCHOLARSHIPS

If you have received any financial assistance for college including grants, work study, and/or scholarships, please give a copy of this information to Mrs. Gardner, in the Counseling Office, or to Mrs. Simmonds, in the Career Center, as soon as possible.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS

College-bound juniors are encouraged to take ACT/SAT tests toward the end of their junior year.

Test Date Register by Late Registration

SAT May 2 April 3 April 21 June 6 May 8 May 27

ACT Mar. 24 — — Apr. 4 — Feb. 29 – Mar. 13 June 13 May 8 May 9 – 22

How can a student be best prepared for these college-entrance tests? Practice tests are available in the Career Center and online. Check the Student Counseling Website for registration and any additional information.

STUDENT ATHLETES

Students who registered for a sport for next school year are reminded that they must get a physical exam after March 1 of this year and return the physical form to the Mountain View athletic office by June 1. Students will not be placed in a sports class until this is done. A new physical is required each year.

Athletes interested in playing a sport in college must sign-up with the NCAA by the end of their junior year. Check with your counselor or the Counseling Website for additional information.

SENIORS – FAFSA REMINDER

If you are a college-bound student, you should be submitting your FAFSA. By filing the FAFSA, you may be

eligible for Federal Pell Grants and loans. Even if you are living at home and have a merit-based scholarship, you still might qualify!

Many scholarships also require that you have at least filed the FAFSA in order to qualify for their scholarships. There are many parents who believe their family won’t qualify for Federal help – you might be surprised! Even if you don’t qualify for grants you may qualify for Federal subsidized loans.

Make sure to check out www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Simmonds in the Career Center for more information.

DID YOU KNOW?

Your student’s grade level is determined by the number of credits earned by the beginning of the school year.Sophomore = 5 creditsJunior = 11 creditsSeniors = 16 credits

SUMMER SCHOOL ADVISEMENT

MVHS counselors will be meeting with students to complete summer school advisement. Your child may need to take a class (or classes) this summer in order to be on track to graduate. By doing so, your student will not only recover credits but also improve his/her skills in these academic areas.

Please examine the information sent home, then take the necessary steps to register for summer school. If you have questions, please call your child’s counselor.

MENTORO is a free peer tutoring program available at Mountain View to help any student in need. Students helping students is a tradition at MVHS. Pick up an application in the Counseling office.

The annual SKILLS USA Toilet Paper Drive

Skills USA hosted its annual Sunshine Acres Toiletry and Toilet Paper Drive during February, sending representatives to classrooms during 3rd hour to give a brief presentation about the drive and to answer questions about contributions. Skills USA students collected toilet paper, toiletry items, and cash that students could give.

But you can still give to Sunshine Acres.

Send along contributions — material or cash — this month to the front office to be delivered to Mr. Chaisson and Skills USA. This community service

project benefits the orphans that are hosted at Sunshine Acres, by providing them with toilet paper and other necessities they may need.

Sunshine Acres provides loving home environments for 80 children who do not have parents that can care for them at this time due to a variety of reasons.

Help out the kids by sending toilet paper and toiletries (toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and more). To learn about

Sunshine Acres, go to http://sunshineacres.org/

If you’re applying to college, or need to send your transcript to an employer or other destination, you’ve already got plenty of forms to fill out. So place your transcript requests online with Secure Transcript™ — the safe, paperless way to send transcripts directly to the destinations you choose.

It’s easy, it’s secure, and it’s available 24/7.

Here’s how:

Sign up by identifying your school and provide some

information about yourself, including your email address.

Choose the destinations where you want to send your transcripts. Sign off by paying online — there’s a small fee per transcript — and you’re done.

We’ll send out official transcripts, checked and approved by your school. We’ll email you to confirm that they’ve gone out. And for colleges (and other destinations) that accept transcripts electronically, we’ll even confirm when they receive them.
