What is Point of View?

Point of view is a way the events of a story are conveyed to the reader. There are three parts to point of view. The first person, second person, and third person.

Words that signify which point of view something is

• 1st person- we, our, us

• 2nd person-you, your, call the person by name

• 3rd person- he, her, it, they

Examples of First Person Point of View

1. I have a basketball game against Kimmons today.

2. Chris and I are ballers when it comes to basketball.

3. We will win regionals at the end of the year!

Examples of Second Person Point of View

1. You have a huge game today so you better get some rest.

2. Don’t you have food in your house?3. Did you make in baskets in your game.

Examples of Third Person Point of View

1. His jersey number was 5.2. He let her get first in the race to be nice.3. They went to eat at Olive Garden.

Examples of what NOT to do

• Don’t try and mix the point of views together.• Use no point of view.• Use too much point of view.

Important Facts

• The discussion of point of view in literature is one of the touchiest craft-debates among writers and editors.

• Choosing your point of view in literature is one of the most important things you will do as you plan your story.
