SPRING 2015

POINT NORTHwithC MPASSThe final session of the school year began early march and hundreds of students from Vaughn, Sable, Paris and Fletcher Elementary signed up for the COMPASS after school program. This spring session students took art, drama, sports, yoga and science classes.

11TH ANNUAL COMPASS BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS FUNDRAISER!The 11th Annual COMPASS Breakfast of Champions Breakfast Fundraiser was held on April 8 at Beck Recreation Center and showcased some of the amazing work that the students do in the after school program. Longtime friend and partner of the COMPASS Program, Gina Oldenburg, was the Master of Ceremonies. Dignitaries and City Officials in attendance included: Molly Markert, Bob LeGare, Debbie Hunter-Holen, Nancy Freed, Nancy Jackson, Barbara Yamrick, Mary

Lewis and Eric Nelson. Guests enjoyed breakfast provided by the Tin Cup Restaurant, the program that included a speech from Antonio Welke, an 8th grade student from Aurora West College Preparatory Academy (AWCPA), performances from the Bollywood Dance group from AWCPA and Drama group from Paris Elementary. IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD TRUCKS! Ms. Renee and her Bakin’ Bakery Food Truck swings by South Middle School every Monday after school. COMPASS students at South Middle School received the awesome experience of baking and making sweet and savory treats in a real working food truck! The students at South love Ms. Renee’s class and it is a class that always fills up each session. It is great having a small business owner with a unique and inspiring passion as a part of the COMPASS program! Be on the lookout for Renee and her Bakin’ Bakery Food Truck throughout the Denver Metro area.

AN ARBOR DAY CELEBRATIONThis year Vaughn Elementary won our annual tree poem contest in clebration of Arbor Day. In that honor the COMPASS kids got a gorgeous tree planted in the front yard by the City’s Forestry Division. Despite the snow and chilly weather, students and teachers gathered otuside to indiviually help plant the tree by shoveling a bit of soil into the plot. We wish the students good luck for next years competition!

MEET OFFICER GRAHAM Students at Sable, Vaughn and Fletcher were visited by the Aurora Police Department this session as well. Officer Al Graham brought his knowledge along with his police gear to teach the kids the importance of staying in school, keeping out of trouble and making good choices. Students had the chance to see both a police car and a police motorcycle. They asked a lot of questions and became familiar with how to become a Police Officer. It was a great opportunity for students in the north Aurora area to meet a police officer and learn a little more about being a cop in real life, not just what they see on the television or in movies. Thank you Officer Graham for making the time to visit the COMPASS kids!
