Background and Data Context

This demographic profile was created for Aurora

Health Access’ Immigrant and Refugee Children’s

Health Task force, a subgroup of the health alliance’s

Pediatric Access Work Group. The aim was to fill a

gap in immigrant/refugee demographic data for the

80010, 80011, 80012, 80017 zip codes in North

Aurora in order to better understand the community

and address relevant issues.

Market Area & Map Data Representation

For this profile we grouped census tracts into four

zip codes in North Aurora to find totals for the

combined area. The range breaks are calculated

using a data classification method called quantile

classification1that distributes the census tracts into

equal groups of 20%.

Notes

• 1Quantile classification: a data classification method that distributes a set of values into group that contain an equal number of values. The range breaks in these maps include 20% of the census tracks in each level.

• 2Limited English: % Of Children/Adults with Limited English Speaking Ability % Child 5-17: Total population age 5-17 speak English “not well” or “not at all” / Total 5-17 population % Adult: Total population age 18+ speak English “not well” or “not at all” / Total 18+ population Source: ACS B16004 -AGE BY LANGUAGE SPOKEN AT HOME BY ABILITY TO SPEAK ENGLISH FOR THE POPULATION 5 YEARS AND OVER Respondents who reported speaking a language other than English were asked to indicate their English-speaking ability based on one of the following categories: "Very well," "Well," "Not well," or "Not at all." Limited English speaking in the map is defined as “not well” or “not at all”.

• 3Foreign Born Population and Citizenship Status: Calculation: % Foreign Born Population: Foreign born population/Total Population % Non-Citizen Foreign Born Population: Non-Citizen Foreign Born Population/Total Foreign Born Population Source: ACS B05002 Place Of Birth By Nativity And Citizenship Status Respondents were asked to select one of two categories: (1) in the United States, or (2) outside the United States. In the American Community Survey, respondents selecting category (1) were then asked to report the name of the state while respondents selecting category (2) were then asked to report the name of the foreign country, or Puerto Rico, Guam, etc. Respondents were asked to select one of five categories: (1) born in the United States, (2) born in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Northern Marianas, (3) born abroad of U.S. citizen parent or parents, (4) U.S. citizen by naturalization, or (5) not a U.S citizen. Respondents indicating they are a U.S. citizen by naturalization are also asked to print their year of naturalization. People born in American Samoa, although not explicitly listed, are included in the second response category.

• 4Poverty: Calculation: % Children in Poverty with Foreign Born Parents: Children in Poverty living with One Foreign Born Parent or Both parents Foreign Born/Total Children in Poverty Source: ACS B05010 Ratio Of Income To Poverty Level In The Past 12 Months By Nativity Of Children Under 18 Years In Families And Subfamilies By Living Arrangements And Nativity Of Parents Poverty statistics in ACS products adhere to the standards specified by the Office of Management and Budget in Statistical Policy Directive 14. The Census Bureau uses a set of dollar value thresholds that vary by family size and composition to determine who is in poverty.

• 5Region vs. Nation: Prior to 2006, CDPHE collected data based on region instead of individual nation. After 2007 we have the ability to track by individual nation.
