    ThiswasthepopularnamebywhichthefrigateConstitution

    wasknown.ThepoemwasfirstprintedintheBostonDailyAdvertiser,atthetimewhenitwasproposedtobreakuptheoldshipasunfitforservice.Isubjointheparagraphwhichledtothewritingofthepoem.ItisfromtheAdvertiserofTuesday,September14,1830:--

    "OldIronsides.--IthasbeenaffirmedupongoodauthoritythattheSecretaryoftheNavyhasrecommendedtotheBoardofNavyCommissionerstodisposeofthefrigateConstitution.Sinceithasbeenunderstoodthatsuchastepwasincontemplationwehaveheardbutoneopinionexpressed,andthatindecideddisapprobationofthemeasure.Suchanationalobjectofinterest,soendearedtoournationalprideasOldIronsidesis,should

    ThispoemwassuggestedbytheappearanceinoneofourstreetsofavenerablerelicoftheRevolution,saidtobeoneofthepartywhothrewtheteaoverboardinBostonHarbor.Hewasafinemonumentalspecimeninhiscockedhatandkneebreeches,withhisbuckledshoesandhissturdycane.ThesmilewithwhichI,asayoungman,greetedhim,meantnodisrespecttoanhonoredfellow-citizenwhosecostumewasoutofdate,butwhosepatriotismneverchangedwithyears.Idonotrecallanyearlierexampleofthisformofverse,whichwascommendedbythefastidiousEdgarAllanPoe,whomadeacopyofthewholepoemwhichIhaveinhisownhandwriting.GoodAbrahamLincolnhadagreatlikingforthepoem,andrepeateditfrommemorytoGovernorAndrew,
