Genealogy KC

Genealogy KC is a FREE event

held at the LDS Church at 6751 NE

70th St, Kansas City, MO 64119. on

September 16 and 17. The NWMGS

has been invited to present an

overview of the materials that can be

found in our library. We hope that

our members will take advantage of

this two day event to sharpen their

genealogy skills.

He Resides in Italy In early May of this year, the NWMGS was

contacted by a journalist in Italy who is looking for

family members of Edward F. Golden, Jr., a First

Lieutenant who died in Italy in 1945. He is buried at the

Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy.

We’ve been able to trace his sister, Laura (Golden)

Spalsbury, who recently passed away. His son Edward

“Sonny” Golden III graduated from Central High School

in St. Joseph in 1962 and was last known to be in

Ohio. There is a small plaque in Edward’s memory in

northern Italy, in the town of Cadelbosco. The town

will be dedicating a park in Edward’s memory in

September and the mayor would like to invite family

members.

If you know the family or have any clues on how we

might connect them to the people hoping to honor

Edward, please email Andrea Vaccari, the journalist making this request, at

Edward Golden’s

monument. The “G”

first initial is an

error well known to

locals.

Being a non-profit is a challenge, and I think

everybody understands that. When times are tough, gift

-giving suffers and we all feel the effects. For the past

few years the monetary donations to the NWMGS have

been significantly lower and our bottom line was

difficult to keep balanced. In the past newsletter we put

out a call for help to our members and boy oh boy, did

you respond!! Beyond our wildest hopes! We were

overwhelmed with the generosity shown and raised over $6,000 to help keep

our library running, and keep us in the black for this year. Honestly, I can say

that it brought tears to my eyes to read the letters that accompanied many of

the generous checks.

While we know and understand the importance of the work we do, we often

wonder if it is appreciated by the rest of the community. But the passion and

outpouring from those who responded to

our request for help certainly laid to rest

any doubts I had that others do indeed

feel equally grateful. So, on behalf of the

entire Board of the NWMGS, I thank

each and every one of you who

acknowledged our need and took steps to

help. Thank you!!

New Resource Available While most of us enjoy a good

browse through the old newspapers,

Monica Eshelman takes the habit to a

whole new height, helping other

researchers along the way.

For the past few months, Monica

has been steadily perusing all the

available newspapers online and

creating indexes of the deaths

mentioned. Because Missouri

started issuing death certificates in

1910, Monica began in 1909, and is

working backwards. She has

completed the first six years, which

can be found on our website.

This is a labor of love for Monica

and we cannot thank her enough for

sharing these indexes with us and

asking that we make them available

to all researchers. And so we have.

From the home page of the website,

go to RECORDS, and then to

DOCUMENTS. Each index is

sorted alphabetically, so finding your

surname(s) should be easy.

However, as any newspaper

browser knows, some articles are

illegible or only partially legible. In

those cases, Monica has indexed the

fragments that can be read, hoping to

give the researcher enough clues to

pursue.

Submissions for

The Journal by Pamela Dandurant Montgomery, Editor

Once again, we are putting

together The Journal for our

members. The theme for this issue

will be Sports and Games.

Most families grew up playing

games of all kinds, especially in the

era before television. My

grandparents got together with

friends and played cards, drinking

grandpa’s homemade beer, and my

mom always talked about loving her

archery class at Central High School

in the 1930’s. Some of our members

have family who played baseball,

football, tennis, and lots of other

sports, maybe something

transplanted to America, like rugby

or cricket. One article lined up for

Missouri Freedom Seekers LaDawndra Robbs gave a

presentation at the NWMGS

library on the Missouri

Freedom Seekers.

LaDawndra shared an 1862

New Times article detailing a

slave escape from Buchanan

County, and important details

about the Missouri volunteer

colored soldiers database from

the National Archives.

She also discussed the

significance of the Freedmen’s

Bureau records after the Civil

War, describing work currently

being done to index the

National Archive digitized

records.

Thank you to LaDawndra

for this unique presentation!

this issue is a discussion of a hand

carved chess set from Germany’s

1930’s, brought to America by a

Dutch immigrant whose family home

was taken over by Nazi soldiers for

the duration. All games and all

sports will fit into this issue, so

please mine those old photos for

evidence that your family members

were gamers.

Send submissions either in a Word

document or simply in the body of

an email to

[email protected] by

September 1, 2016. It helps us a lot

if you submit articles early instead of

waiting for the deadline, so begin

right now to search your attics and

basements!

N W M G S C a l e n d a r Upcoming Events 2nd Saturday of each month (no meeting in August 2016): Family Tree Maker Class from 10:30 a.m. to noon,

at the NWMGS library. A different topic is covered each month and users are welcome to join any time.

Thursday, September 22, 7:00 p.m.: History of the Panama Canal and the People Who Built It: Presenter: Joe

Cornelison, at the NWMGS library.

Mr. Cornelison, a native of Maryville, MO, is a West Point graduate and commissioned officer who served in

Viet Nam. While later serving at Ft. Campbell, KY, he earned a master’s degree in public service from Western

Kentucky University. Mr. Cornelison then attended law school under the Army’s Funded Legal Education Pro-

gram and graduated from Georgetown University with a juris doctor degree in 1977. Following a clerkship with a

judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Mr. Cornelison served as an Army Judge Advocate.

He retired in 1995 in the rank of colonel, but was then appointed by President Bill Clinton to be the Deputy Ad-

ministrator of the Panama Canal Commission, the senior U.S. position at the Canal. In that capacity, his responsi-

bilities included not only assisting in the management of this international waterway and its 10,000 bi-national em-

ployees, but also leading the effort to ensure a smooth transition of the Canal to Panamanian ownership at the end

of 1999 in accordance with the terms of the Carter-Torrijos Treaty.

In 2005, he returned to his hometown of Maryville and became the general counsel for Northwest Missouri State

University. Thereafter, he served as general counsel for the Missouri Department of Higher Education, and now he

is a senior counsel in the higher education practice group of the law firm of Husch Blackwell, LLP, of Kansas City,

MO.

Family Tree Maker Group Our Family Tree Maker (FTM) group meets on the second Saturday of most

months. This is a group of users who are dedicated to learning and getting the

most out of their FTM software. Each month a different subject or area of the

software is explored. The group has been active for almost two years, and

new users are always welcome to join. The class meets from 10:30 to noon.

The FTM group is followed by the DNA interest group from 12:30 - 2:00

p.m. DNA is a complicated and diverse subject, with much to cover. This

group explores ways to track and analyze the data that comes from DNA

results, how to use them within the context of a family tree, and what all the

results of DNA testing can mean for expanding a family tree.

you are gone. Don’t just collect your family history and store it away in binders and files! Learn how

creative displays and crafts can capture the imagination of your non-historian friends and relatives, while

honoring your ancestors. These projects are guaranteed to inspire your family to ask you to tell them
