NaderMousavizadehspokeonthefirstdayofthecongressaboutgeopoliticsandeconomicaffairsintoday’sglobalizedworld,withrelevancetothedynamicsweseeunfoldingintheMiddleEastandNorthAfrica.Mr.MousavizadehspokeabouttheshiftingpowerrelationsamongglobalplayerssuchastheUS,China,TurkeyandBrazil.Thiscamewiththeprojectionthatwecanexpecttoseemanymoreshiftsinthecomingyears,giventhecurrenttrajectoriesandthedynamicsbetweenthekeyplayers.DevelopingnationsandrisingpowerssuchasTurkeyandChinaareseekingtheir“placeatthetable”,andarenowseekingthisoutsideofthetraditionalinstitutionssuchasWorldBank,IMF,UnitedNationsandsoon.Theimpetusforthischangeisthattherelativepowerofthedevelopingpowersbuiltintotraditionalpowerstructuresisoftenlessequitable.HecharacterizedChinaasacountrythat“reliesonearnedpower,butdeliversonpowerwithoutdemocracy,”theMiddleEastas“notdeliveringonpromises,thereforewithlessearnedpower,”whichhasledtotherecentcollectionofuprisings.
Therefore,theUSandChinaareunlikelytoexperienceeventslikethoseweseeelsewhere.HisaddressendedwithapredictionthatTurkeyandBrazilmayjoinhandstocreatenewinstitutionsandassociations,whichwillenablethemtohavemorerelativepowerandfacilitatetheirmovefartherawayfromeffortstoentertheEU,andUNassociations.Thisispartofashiftingbalanceofpowerthatwewilllikelyseeinthefuture.
Whilethisspeechwasoff-topicfromprojectmanagementperse,itisimpossibletoescapetheglobalcontextinwhichweworkandparticularlyasthelocationoftheEMEACongresswasIstanbul,thiswastimelycontent.

MotivationalspeakerandauthorCathyO’DowdwastheclosingKeynoteSpeaker.Herinspirationaltalkwasonself-motivation,riskassessment,teamdynamics,leadershipandtacklingobstaclesastepatatime.Shewasrecruitedin1995tojointheFirstSouthAfricanEverestExpeditiontoplacethenewSouthAfricanflagatthesummitofEverestandisthefirstwomantoclimbMt.Everestfromboththesouthandnorthsides.
Ms.O’Dowdconveyedsomebasicprinciplesregardingtheimportanceofteamdynamics,andthatconfidenceandattitudemattermorethanskillandcapability.ThroughherstoryoftheharrowingclimbofMountEverest,shedemonstratedthattherealdifficultyliesnotwiththeenvironmentinwhichweoperate,butinourownheads.Eventhemostskilledandqualifiedpeoplecanbecomevictimsofnegativeself-talkwithoutevenrealizingit,andasplitsecondspentfocusedontheenormityofthechallengeratherthanontheobjectivecanbeenoughtocauseustofail.Alongsimilarlines,farmoreriskythananyeventorchallengeyoucanencounterontheworld’stallestmountain;snow,ice,avalanchesorcrevasses,thelessonshebroughthometotheaudiencewasthattheriskiestthingyoucanencounteronthemountainisyourownteam.Especiallyinsuchaperilousenvironmentteammembersmustrelyoneachotherforsurvival,andthereisnoroomforerror,whichcanbebroughtonbyteamdynamicsturningsour,andescalatingintoconflict.
Anotherlessonfromherspeechwasthatmotivationismostsuccessfulintheformofrecognition;anditismostimportantforindividualsandteamsatthemomentwhennooneknowsifaprojectwillbeagreatsuccessoraterriblefailure.Notafterwards,wheneveryoneknowsyouaresucceeding,butduringtheuncertainty,whenyouarehavingthehardesttimeandthegreatestchallengesarestilltheretoovercome.That’swhenyouwantthebignamesonyourteamsstandingupforyou.ShedemonstratedthispointrecallingwhenSouthAfricanPresidentNelsonMandelacalleduptheexpeditionteamandconveyedtothemthathewas
proudofthemfortrying,andthathebelievedtheycoulddoit.NelsonMandelaknewnothingaboutrockclimbingorhowskilledtheteamwas,butthiseventgavethemsomethingtoliveupto,andtheimpetustokeepstrivingatacriticalmomentontheirjourney.
Mypersonalfavoriteofhertopicswastheprecariousnatureofteamdynamicsifpropercareisnottakentodeveloptheminastructuredway,oftenwiththehelpofamoreexperiencedteammemberorteamlead.Whenteamsworkproperly,peoplearethegreatestasset,andwhentheydonot,theworstfrustration.Shedescribedascenarioinwhichtheteamleadtookthedecisiontolettheteamstartoffthetripalonewhilehestayedbehindtowaitformissingequipment.Thisdecisionwastakendespitethefactitwasanewandlessexperiencedteam,andthelackofstructureresultedinpoorteamdynamicsandsettheteamoffonthewrongfoot.AsMs.O’Dowddescribed,thiswastheclassicPMdecisionofshorttermbenefitandcostsavingsinresponsetoacrisissituation,overlong-termbenefitandteamcohesiveness;“intheory,allwehadtodowasspendtwoweekswalkinguptheHimalayanvalleytobondandgettoknoweachother…inreality,itwastwoweekstodiscoverhowmuchwedislikedeachother.”

She has been speaking professionally for ten years, presenting to corporations in 30 countries on five continents. Second,forallofwhoparticipatedinour30thYearCelebrationandVolunteerRecognitionEventinMarch2013–thankyouforattending.IespeciallywanttothankLindaRead,VPofOutreach,
hergreatgroupofeventvolunteers,theMembershipPortfoliovolunteers,oursponsorandallthepastpresidentswhoattendedformakingthisbothmemorableandaneventthatsmashedallpastattendancerecordsforaeveningevent!Wealsogaveawaysomecoolstuff.Thankstoallthosewhocontributed.

It’sfirstthinginthemorning,andyouarepreparingtointerviewprospectiveprojectmanagersforanopenpositiononyourteam.Whetheritisyourfirstcandidateintervieworyouhaveconductedmanybeforeinyourcareer,youarelikelytobecontemplatingthelineofquestioningyouwillaskoftheprospectivecandidates.Perhapsyouarethinkingofquestionsfroma“StrengthsandWeaknesses:ProjectManagerProfile”thatyoutypicallyuse,however,anylineofquestioningcanonlyprovidealimitedinsightaboutthecandidateandtheirpotentialtobeaneffectiveprojectmanagerforyourorganization.Understandthataskilledcandidatemaywellhavesatthroughsimilarinterviewsrecently,researchedyourorganization,andpreparedcompetentanswerstowhattheybelievearethemosttypicalinterviewquestions.Ormaybetheyhaven’t,becausethisisthefirstinterviewtheyaregoingto–althoughtheyareafirst-rateprojectmanagerthatiswellthoughtofintheirexistingorganization.Inordertoassesswhetherapersonhasthepotentialtobeaneffectiveprojectmanagerinyourorganization,wecontendthatyouneedtoconductspecificassessmentsbeyondinterviewsandreferencesofpreviousworkassignments.
Thereisno“magicformula‟forsuccessinfindingaprojectmanagerthattranscendstheneedsofallorganizations.Aprojectmanagerwhoishighlysuccessfulinoneorganizationorcompanymayfindlimitedsuccessinanother.Muchmaydepend,forexample,onhowtheorganizationsetsitselfupforrunningprojects(strongmatrix,weakmatrix,projectized,orfunctional).Knowinghowyourownorganizationoperatesitsprojectsiscrucialtoselectingnewprojectmanagementtalent,andtomakesureanewstarterisnotplacedintoarolewheretheywillnotrealizetheirpotentialandtheorganizationwillnotreapthemaximumamountofbenefit.

First, the need to be an extrovert.Itiscommonplaceforprojectmanagerstogivepresentationsandleadworkgroups–afterall,aprojectmanager’sjobis90%communication.Theaudiencefortheirpresentationsrangefromprojectteamstoprojectsponsorsandperhapscustomersand/orinvestors.Aprojectmanagerneedstobecomfortableaddressinganysizeofstakeholderand/orcustomergroupinawidevarietyofsituations.Anintrovertedpersonwilllikelyhavetoundergolong-termtrainingandcoachingto“comeoutoftheirshell”inordertobetrulyeffectiveinallenvironments.Extrovertedpeopletendtoexhibitanaturalcomfortinsuchsituationsandareatanadvantage.
Next, the need to display personal courage.Inmanyprojectstheprojectmanagerwillneedtosettledisputesanddifferenceofopinionamongststakeholders.Negotiationscanoftenbedelicate,particularlyattightmomentsintheproject’slife.The“rightdecision‟isusuallynotonethatisfavorabletoallstakeholders.Aneffectiveprojectmanagershoulddisplaypersonalcourageinalldecisionsmade,toseethemthroughandensuretheteamcontinuestopulltogetherforthebenefitoftheproject.Maintainingrespectfromallstakeholderstakesskill,whichcanbelearnedthroughexperience.
This leads us to charisma.Acharismaticprojectmanagerismorelikelytohaveotherswillingandwantingtofollowtheirleadbecausetheyhavefaithintheirleadership.Morethanlikelythecharismaticprojectmanagerisinabetterpositiontomentorandtrainothers.

Neitherofthesetwocorecharacteristicsofcourageorcharismaarepresentinthecorepersonalitytraitsofallpeople,anditisimportanttoteaseouthowmuchofthesecharacteristicsthenewcandidatesyouareinterviewingpossess.
Having a consistent “can do‟ attitudeisakintobeingpositiveatallteams,andalwaysseeingasolutiontoachallengeoraproblem.Suchanoutlookcanmakeahugedifferenceinthefaceof”roadblocks‟whentheyappear.Thispositiveattitudesaysalotaboutthepersons‟characterandhowtheywillreacttoadversesituations.
Aneffectiveprojectmanagerwhilebeingresultsdrivenwillalsohavea sense of team and enablement.Heorsheisfocusedontheteamandtheprojectoverandabovetheirindividualneeds.Theprojectmanageriscontinuallyencouragingtheteamtochallengethemselvesandtorisetoheightsthatmayevengobeyondtheexpectationsoftheproject(thoughnotto„goldplate‟asolution,ofcourse).Tobeeffective,theprojectmanagershouldconsidertheirlong-termrelationshipswiththeprojectteam.Ifheorsheistotallyresultsdriven,withoutasenseofteamandenablement,sure,theirparticularprojectmaygetdonewithintheprojectconstraints,butatwhatprice,andwhatiftheyhaveanotherprojectwiththesameteammember(s)infuture?Withasenseofteamandenablement,aprojectmanagerispronetobemoreeffectiveinthelongterm.Andpeoplewillwanttoworkwiththem(evenmoresoiftheyarecharismaticandhavea“cando‟attitude).Ifyourorganizationpreferenceistofocusoneachprojectbyprojectwithoutregardsforthelong-term,bringinginsomeonewhoisfocusedon„justgettingtheworkdone‟wouldbethebestoption,butnowadaysthistypeofapproachisrarelypursued.
Inconclusion,weassertthatthereare5particularpersonalcharacteristicsthatcanmakeapersoneffectiveasaprojectmanager–theneedtobeanextrovert,todisplaypersonalcourage,topossessameasureofcharisma,tohavea“cando‟attitudeandtobeagoodteamworker.Whenthesecharacteristicsarepresent,alongwithcoreprojectmanagementskillssuchasbeingagoodorganizer,beingdetail-oriented,andother“discipline-orientatedskills‟,theprojectmanagerismorelikelytobeeffectiveacrossmanytypesoforganizationsandindustries.Thosewhoaremakingkeyhiringdecisionsforprojectmanagementtalentshouldconsider
appropriateassessmentsinadditiontoaperson’sexperienceandinterviewsinordertogainacompletepictureofpotentialprojectmanagers.Takingthetimetoselecttherightpeoplecanpayhugedividends.
