Back Up Landing System: Provides Safety Margin/Redundancy for integration and retrofit of an Optical back-up landing system to provide an aircraft only (no shipboard system required). Addresses “single point of failure”, which resulted in loss of an MQ-8B aircraft. MQ-8C assessed as a Cat IC safety hazard for this issue. Additional redundancy/reliability for MQ-8 Landing System required in order to address safety issues discussed above. Issue Retrofits both MQ-8B and MQ-8C airframes.

Ice Detection & Avoidance: MQ-8 does not have a stand-off ice detection system that can detect icing Conditions at a safe stand-off distance before ice has a chance to accumulate on the rotors, (nor does it have an ice removal system) resulting in loss of aircraft when icing builds up on the rotors. (2 aircraft have been lost and a 3rd aircraft loss was marginally avoided). (Ice Detection Tied to NARG MQ-8 Priority 4).

S&A and WB SATCOM: S&A - Sense and Avoid functionality will extend coverage area of UAV operations. Wide band SATCOM – integration of wide band SATCOM capability for FMV/C2/ISR data exchange on MQ-8C to enable extended range operations away from LCS. Also needed for sense and avoid/due regard UAV operations when operating at lower altitudes and extended ranges outside of RF LOS (retrofits 30 MQ-8C). (Due Regard tied to NARG MQ-8 Priority 4, SATCOM needed to maximize S&A capability).

ASW MSN Capability: Integrates ASW sensor capability for MQ-8C including Sonobuoy receiver /relay, dual pod sonobuoy launchers with a Magnetic Anomaly localization sensor. 20 kits – 13 operational MQ-8Cs for LCS ASW MM (additional units: 1 EMD test A/C, 1 SIL, 5 spares). LCS CPD requires ASW capability for MQ-8. N96 memo lists ASW sensors/weapons as requirements for Fire Scout. Assumes add’l MQ-8C aircraft/SCS will need to be deployed to populate ASW LCS mission modules. Without MQ-8C ASW mission suite, LCS will deploy often with only one ASW capable MH-60R due to LCS weight limitation, leaving ship with reduced ASW capability. (Ties to NARG MQ-8 Priority 6).

Engine Recuperator: Integrates Engine Recuperator hardware capability into the MQ-8, providing increased endurance and/or payload capability, by transferring energy from engine exhaust to combustor inlet air, which significantly reduces specific fuel consumption (SFC). Calculations show an increase of 3 hours TOS Sea Level Standard day mission at baseline payload, or the ability to increase payload by 550 lbs. while maintaining baseline TOS.

USMC MUX/USN MALE Group 5 UAV: The future MAGTF UAS Expeditionary (MUX)/ USN Med Alt Long End (MALE) system will provide a multi-mission, weaponized, shipboard capable/expeditionary system that is runway independent for all weather, long range/persistence, operations from the sea in an anti-access/area denial (A2AD) environment. This next generation UAV capability will have far greater range, endurance, altitude, and payload capability than the current conventional VTOL technology can provide from air capable ships. • Cargo UAS RDC (CQ-24A) developed an unmanned logistics capability that deployed to OEF. System is currently in storage at MCAS Yuma. Planned to be used to support further CONOPS TTP development, TACDEMO’s etc.
• DARPA TERN will develop a demonstration platform to enable future development of a responsive, persistent Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and strike capabilities from smaller ships, including recovery at high sea states. Platform capabilities include: Mission Operating Radius up to >600nm from host ship, one orbit per ship; payload >600 lb. Modular ISR; strike capability.
