A Note to Parents...Pack-In the FUN!Summer flies by! Get the most from it!Summer vacation, particularly in Minnesota, means so much more than just a couple of months away from school. For many families, it means trips, travel, adventure, and new experiences. Prior Lake- Savage Area Schools Community Education offers a wide range of opportunities for students to arrive at adventure and fun throughout the summer. Keep your kids busy and entertained with our programs that also encourage summer learning and development. While we’ve packed a lot of great camp options into this catalog and the summer, you won’t have to travel to experience them! Most of our programming will be held at Grainwood elementary, with a few specialty options at other nearby locations.

Adventure without bags to pack (except maybe a lunch or snack). And no hidden baggage fees! All our camps are the prices listed, with no added fees, costs, or prior purchases required, unless otherwise noted in the class descriptions.Please book your camps early! Seats are limited and classes are subject to cancellation if we do not reach minimum enrollments for each camp.

CAmP CoNNECTIoN* (AgEs 6-12)Create a full day experience from two half-day camps! Register for two starred camps in the same week, a morning and an afternoon camp, and then register for Camp Connection. Community Education staff will ensure that registered students are picked up from their morning camps, have a time and place to eat lunch, and provide time for outside play or indoor activities. Students will then be escorted to their afternoon camps. Both camps must be selected from the list of starred programs taking place at Grainwood Elementary. We will get your child to their afternoon camp so you can get some work done! Please let Community Education know if you will not be using this service for any day of Camp Connection. Sew your own summer dress, head band, and hair scrunchy; then hit the catwalk for a Project Runway Showcase to display all your fashionista creations! No experience necessary. You will learn all you need to know to complete the projects in this camp. Accelerated students may be asked to bring in a cotton t-shirt for up-cycling. You will make the projects listed above while learning sewing basics including how to safely use a sewing machine, cutting patterns to size, hand-stitching techniques, needle work and accessorizing. This class will venture outdoors each day to use the school’s nature area as your inspiration for art works. sTEm, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineer-ing and Mathematics, encourages and promotes critical thinking skills in students through the use of engaged inquiry based learning. During this learning, students tackle a variety of activities and topics within an interdisciplinary STEM approach asking powerful, insightful questions to develop solutions and seek answers. sAFE AT HomE oN mY owN (AgEs 8-11)If you (or your parents!) are feeling nervous about you being home alone for a little while this summer, this class is the solution to helping you feel more prepared. Safe at Home will answer your questions about setting up your routine to be by yourself when your parents are not home. Class will cover common household emergencies, using the telephone, basic first-aid, and more. Course fee includes student workbook. This class is intended as a tool to help families prepare youth for staying home alone. Safe at Home will not fully prepare all youth for the responsibilities involved with being at home alone.

sUmmEr mATH-BY-mAIL (AgEs 5-12)Summer Math-by-Mail has helped thousands of students keep their math skills sharp over the summer. First and second graders, you will receive 10 weeks of lessons specifically designed for primary concept learners. Lessons covered throughout the summer for grades 3-7 will review and support concepts you have explored during the previous school year. You’ll take a pre-test and fill out a questionnaire to individualize your program, and then you will receive nine weeks of materials. Each week’s packet will include five, 20-minute math lessons with problem-solving activities. The activities will apply to a specific math concept or strand. For both groups, after you mail these in they will be returned to you with comments and corrections. You can work at your own pace. You’ll love receiving your returned assignments each week in the mail! When all lessons are completed, you will receive a certificate of achievement and a restaurant meal coupon. Lessons will be mailed beginning the week of June 7th. Please see page 18 for Math-by-Mail for older students.

HIgH/Low CAmP-roBoTICs ProgrAmmINg wITH KINg TEC 2169 mEmBErs (AgEs 9-12)This robotics camp is engineered to challenge your mind in programming, mechanical building, and much more. Think outside the box, but inside the field. Members of each team will work together to design, build, and program a robot to compete in this year’s game challenge. The challenge includes a field with a wall down the center and two different sized balls which robots must score over or under the wall. Each time a robot scores a ball, its alliance scores points! The game will feature two randomly selected robots versus two different, randomly selected robots. The entire game is constricted to a time limit of 90 seconds. Camp includes instruction from King TeC members in the areas of programming and electrical and mechanic engineering. Each team of 3-6 students will be assigned a KING TeC mentor. The final class will include a tournament to showcase your team’s robot design in competition with the other teams and robots. You will also be given glimpses of what it is like to be part of KING TeC, and discover the team’s large robots. Students with all levels of experience are encouraged to register. You won’t leave with a robot, but you will leave with a T-shirt in your size if you register and provide your shirt size by May 29th. T-shirts are not guaranteed after that date. This hybrid option allows for all the learning required for certification, plus practice with these new skills. And, it only requires 3 hours of classroom time for busy families. To participate in this course, please register for the practical portion at www.priorlakesavagece.com (space is limited). Approximately 2 weeks prior to the practical course, this section will be confirmed or cancelled based on enrollment. Students in confirmed classes will be emailed the link to the Red Cross website, where the online course should be completed. No refunds will be issued after this time. This online portion must be complete prior to the classroom portion. Upon completion of the online program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Please bring that Certificate of Completion to the practical application class. This session will cover baby care, such as bottle feeding, spoon feeding, and diapering. Practice exercises related to child/infant conscious choking, rescue breathing, checking for consciousness, and First Aid Skills to use in emergency situations will also take place. The $35 fee is for the classroom portion only. There is a $25 fee to complete the Red Cross online program.

Keep your mind active with the locally developed Math-By-Mail curriculum, created by current middle school math teachers with 40+ years of combined experience! Minnesota State Standards, Math Frameworks MCA strands, and current Minnesota Benchmarks are the foundational basis for this curriculum. With creative problem solving, multiple choice, short answer and vocabulary embedded into an 8 week course of independent study, you will maintain or increase your level of math understanding in addition to reviewing the recommended targets suggested by grade level in the Minnesota School Academic Standards of mathematics. Unlike other programs that are exclusively grade level driven, you will be given a pretest to assess the appropriate skill level necessary to strengthen your individual math needs. You will receive 8 packets to complete at your own pace throughout the summer. As you finish packets, mail them in for feedback and they will be returned to you. Early Childhood Screening is a free and simple check of how your child is growing and developing offered through the Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools. By screening children, between the ages of three and four, we can detect possible health or learning concerns so that children can get help before they start school. Parents may accompany their child through the approximate hour-long process. After the screening activities, the screener shares information on a child’s growth, development, and learning. summer safetyFor Your Child’s Safety . . .In most cases, Community Education provides a Building Monitor or other staff person to be on site when we are offering programs at ISD 719 facilities. These individuals supervise a building or general area, and any Community Education events occurring at that time. Building Monitors are CPR and First Aid Certified and are also available to assist instructors, participants, and families with sign in and sign out before and after class, as well as a variety of other needs. Please feel free to contact the Community Education office or the Building Monitor if you have any questions about summer programming.

Help us ensure the Safety of Your Child. Please Follow these Class Safety and Behavior Procedures:

• Provide an accessible daytime phone number and an additional emergency contact when registering your child for programs.

• Drop off your child in the classroom on time each session.

• Pick up your child in the classroom at the class ending time. If you cannot pick up on time, you are expected to make other arrangements for your child ahead of time. Late pick up fees will apply.

• If someone other than a parent will be picking up your child from class, please let the instructor and/or a Community Education staff person know ahead of time.

• If it is okay for your child (age 10 or over) to walk or bike home following a Summer class, please indicate that on the registration form. Please note that children under 10 must be picked up in the classroom or class meeting space immediately following class. Youth will not be allowed to walk or bike home in the dark.

• Inform the instructor AND a Community Education staff person of any allergies, special needs, or behavioral concerns that may help us to provide the best environment and instruction for your child and the other students enrolled. Please note that 1:1 accomodations typically cannot be made for CE programs.

• The behavior of students is expected to be appropriate for the class learning environment. The instructor and Community Education staff reserve the right to dismiss students immediately, without a refund, when behavior is not appropriate or jeopardizes the safety of themselves or other students. Should this become necessary, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up children immediately.

• Registration implies consent for pictures and/or video of participants in Community Education programs to be taken and/or used for district publications and webpages. If you object to having your child’s picture used, you must notify the Community Education office at 952.226.0080 each time you register.

If you choose to cancel your class registration, to be eligible for a full refund we need to receive your request no later than 4pm, five business days prior to the first day of class. You must call or visit the CE Office to request a cancellation. Cancellations cannot be processed online by a consumer. Refunds are not issued after that time due to commitments made to instructors. Cancellations received after five business days will be subject to no refund. A $10 processing fee will be deducted from any refund. Cancellation - Community Education reserves the right to withdraw a course due to lack of enrollment or loss of a suitable facility. If we have to cancel a class, every effort will be made to contact all the participants who preregistered. Please include on your registration form a phone number where you can be contacted during the day. Community Education assumes no responsibility for reaching registrants who do not provide an accessible daytime phone number. Whenever possible, messages will be left on voicemail/answering machines. If an email is provided at the time of registration, notifications will also be sent to the address provided.

Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or for other unavoidable reasons. These sessions are made up whenever possible.
