Built at a cost of $1.5 million for McCulloch Properties Inc., the 564-foot tall column of water weighs more than eight tons. Farewell, our storyteller Ron Jennings, a 35-year veteran reporter and columnist with the Democrat, died at his home Friday morning at the age of 62 following a prolonged battle with brain cancer. Jennings’ wife of 38 years, Pat, told the Democrat Friday afternoon that her husband passed away at their home about 10:20 a.m. First diag- nosed with a brain tumor in 1990, Jennings fought numerous battles with his illness, which recurred again in December. Pat said tests late last year found “a most invasive and rigorous” tumor had developed in his brain and he was sent home on hospice care soon after. “We have mixed feelings,” Pat said. “We are sorry to lose him but we know that his suffering is over. That is a relief. Ron and I both have faith that whatever is beyond is going to be wonderful and provided by God for us. By now he is somewhere dancing and visiting and having a great time.” Born May 28, 1949, in Maryville, and raised in Stanberry, in north- west Missouri, Jennings served as “Sedalia’s storyteller” at the Democ- rat from his start in 1972 to his retirement in 2007. His years of service to his community, which he called his “second hometown,” and to his profession were recognized with his induction into the Missouri Press Association Hall of Fame in September 2011. In remarks during the ceremony read by his brother, Steve, Ron thanked “the several generations of Sedalians who have trusted me with their stories.” “You’ve given me a wonderful life and the honor of a lifetime. I am deeply appreciative and humbled,” Ron said. Jennings’ 30th anniversary with the Democrat was also recognized by former Rep. Ike Skelton, who read a tribute to his anniversary into the Congressional Record on June 17, 2002. “Ron Jennings started work at the Sedalia Democrat on June 1, 1972. Since then he has covered stories large and small that have touched upon virtually every facet of life in Sedalia, Pettis County and much of the surrounding area. He is a devoted family man, a pillar of his church and a man whose openness and sincerity have won him loyal readers and a multitude of friends over three decades of newspapering. Ron is the one person most identified with the Sedalia Democrat’s news operation,” Skelton said. Pat said her husband “loved working at the Democrat,” where he made numerous friends and built his reputation covering a variety of topics, including a dedication to the local arts community. “He loved the people at the Democrat and the people of Sedalia. He really had a great time doing it,” Pat said. On the eve of his retirement in 2007, Jennings told the Democrat his career was “always about the people.” “I always believed that everyone has a story to tell,” Jennings said. And, of Sedalia, he said: “It became apparent to me very quickly that this was a special place. It has always been, at least in my time here, a very caring and compassionate community.” Jennings is survived by his wife and their three daughters: Katie Erin Poynter, of New Orleans; and Megan Nell Simon and Mary Pillars, both of Sedalia. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Savannah Simon, Elsie Poynter, Jackson Simon, Charlotte Simon and Clara Poynter. The family has requested that memorial contributions in Ron’s name be made to Bothwell Hospice, Habitat for Humanity or First Christian Church of Sedalia, in care of Rea Funeral Chapel. Bushytails remain abundantin January

When the late youth season closes Sunday, deer hunting’s “guns of autumn” will fall silentall across Missouri, and they’ll remain silentuntil next October. For public land hunters inparticular, the sudden quiet can be almosteerie.

I couldn’t resist opening with a bit ofdrama, but the truth is that every classificationof timber from 5-acre wood lots to 500,000-acre national forests really would be that bereftof gunfire were it not for a tiny cadre ofdiehard squirrel hunters who are convincedthat the last few weeks of the long season(Squirrel season closes on Feb. 15) are thetime to be toting a rifle in pursuit of bushytails.

I’m one of them. I’d go so far as to say thatthe last six weeks of the season are a wellearned reward for anyone who is stubbornenough to use a rifle during the summermonths, when even seeing a shootable squirrelis always somewhere between difficult andimpossible.

That’s not the case in January. Given thehunter’s eyes are sensitive to motion, it’s nowpossible to zero in on squirrels literally as faraway as the eye can see.

A pair of Alpen Apex 8x42 binocularssecured to my chest by a harness with elasticstraps marketed by Kahles, moves the possibleto the likely, despite my aging eyesight.

Knowing exactly where my quarry is whileit’s still well out of range makes spot-and-stalkan irresistible tactic. It’s an effective one, too,but I keep all of late season hunting’s provisosin mind.

The most important of these special stipula-tions is the increased significance that line ofsight runs both ways.

If it’s possible for the hunter to see thesquirrel, it’s possible for the squirrel to see thehunter.

Fortunately, at least at long range, squirrelsare more dependent on motion to detect dangerthan hunters are dependent on it to detect din-ner.

While creeping up on a squirrel that hasescaped being eaten not just by a human butalso by a host of furred and feathered predatorsfor several months, a wise hunter takes the firstshot he’s reasonably confident he can make.

Hunters who try to slip just a little bitcloser often catch the eye of their would-betarget after they’ve moved inside its comfortzone.

In the case of gray squirrels — whichsometimes insist on a comfort zone approxi-mately the size of a township, the usual resultis a lost opportunity.

Fox squirrels are more tolerant of suchintrusions, but an unalarmed fox squirrel at 40yards is much easier to hit than a spooked oneat 20 yards.

Spot-and-stalk squirrel hunting late in theseason is a poster child for the law of unin-tended consequences.

Chief among these is the fact that squirrelsspend a lot of their active time on the groundat this time of the year.

Stalkers who don’t pay at least as muchattention to their immediate surroundings asthey do their original goal miss chances to takesome easy shots at squirrels who failed to paysufficient attention to what was going onaround them.

But a little carelessness might work outfine.

For reasons which escape me, the MissouriDepartment of Conservation raised the limit onsquirrels to 10.

I had every intention of sticking with theold limit of six, but there came a day when Ifound myself in the middle of a bushytail con-vention.

After the proverbial smoke cleared, I foundmyself lugging nine increasingly heavy squir-rels back to the truck.

By the time I’d skinned, cleaned and gottenthem packaged for the freezer, I was more thanready to return to my less greedy days.

As much as I like it, I admit that wintersquirrel hunting has the potential to producemiseries far more serious than an overflowinggame bag.

Despite what we’ve seen lately, January can— and no doubt will — get cold.

Hunters who think of squirrel season interms of sweat and ticks can find themselveswoefully unprepared mentally for late seasonhunting even if they’ve managed to wear theright clothes to keep physically warm.

Fortunately, squirrels don’t like venturingoutdoors in sub-zero weather any better thanwe do.

They’ll stay snug and warm inside theirdens, unless a prolonged cold snap forces themto seek food, making staying home an equallygood option for hunters.

On the other hand, temperatures in theteens and low 20s are within the typical squir-rel’s comfort zone.

Since squirrels will be active under theseconditions, hunters need to be, too.

Even in the winter, squirrels are most activethe first two or three hours after sunrise with ashorter active period near sunset.

That’s not to say that a few squirrels won’tbe out and about throughout the daylighthours.

Speaking of activity periods, it’s time forme to gather up my gear for my weekend hunt.

Maybe we’ll defy the odds and meet up inthe woods.

Squirrels offer winter hunting option
