On the 5th November people in England celebrate a holiday called Guy Fawkes Day, or Bonfire Night.

Children sometimes wear costumes and masks and make a “Guy", which is a straw dummy dressed in old clothes.

It is a great excuse to get together with family and friends to enjoy a bonfire party with fireworks and sparklers and eat toffee apples and Parkin cake!

Four hundred years and eleven years ago, in 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up a government building

called "The Houses of Parliament".

He wanted to kill King James I and all the King’s leaders.

Guy Fawkes was one of a group of men, who felt that the government

was treating Roman Catholics unfairly.

On the 5th of November, the King and his leaders were about to meet. Guy Fawkes’ men

placed barrels of gunpowder in one of the cellars underneath the building where the king was

having his meeting.

Guy Fawkes went to light the fuse that would set off the explosion, but the plot was discovered before he had a chance to do it!

The king was saved, and Guy Fawkes was hanged.

Since then Guy Fawkes Day has been a time for

children and adults to celebrate.

The fun begins when darkness falls

and the "Guy" is tossed onto the

bonfire, the fireworks go off

and the “Guy" goes up in a flames.

One of the best parts of Bonfire Night is bonfire food. People eat baking potatoes cooked in the fire, sausages cooked over the flames and marshmallows toasted in the fire. Of course, ask an adult to help you - fire can be dangerous.

Try these too… toffee apples, ginger cake, treacle toffee and flap jack!

Fireworks can be great fun, but they can also be very dangerous and every year hundreds of people get hurt because they do not take enough care with fireworks. Make sure you’re

not one of them by following these few simple rules.

Adults only – should light or hold fireworks!Never go near a firework that has been lit-because even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode.WEAR GLOVES if you are given a sparkler to hold and hold it at arms length. When it goes out don’t touch the metal because it will still be VERY hot!Keep your PETS INDOORS because the may be frightened.

NEVER play with fireworks!
